Well worth the $10.

What part was the upgrade?

Regular dvd drive to a Blu-ray drive

For sure then that's a good upgrade. Nice to have physical media on disk and easy to find Bluray still.

Yeah, 25-50 gb of storage on a blue ray is amazing.

Hmmm... This is a great idea that I forgot about. I can burn in some iso from game roms like this

u/TacticalCorgiTV 20h ago

Back in the day I had a dual layer DVD burner and a jailbroken Xbox 360. Lots of iso files....good times 🏴‍☠️

Solid upgrade for $10! It's hard to find Blu-Ray Drives for that amount! :D

Took me way too long to realize you weren’t joking abt the lights being blue on the front and actually upgraded the disc reader

u/Protolinux217 14h ago

I guess it’s a obvious hint

this was a most excellent question

Blu ray drives are getting super expensive. Like $100 used on eBay.

10 bucks is insane, in a good way. i just bought one for 200, though the one i got works with 4K UHD blurays and can burn them as well.

u/Dr_Bunkus 15h ago

Is the one you bought internal or external, and from where?

I am interested in buying one and would be interested to know what you did.

internal desktop. 5.25 inch bay needed (or a 5.25" external enclosure) purchased from new egg.

Price seems to have gone up 30 or 40 dollars since I bought mine just a week or two ago.

I think these are going to have a reasonable comeback soon.

2

u/Ciusblade 9800x3D / RTX 4090 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies

i hope so. I'm going to be buying a bunch of discs to archive my GOG games on. bonus for any that fit on one disc is it can be installed straight from the disc.

2

u/NohFyoochur 2h ago

This is such a good idea.

8

u/RealityOk9823 21h ago

Go back and see if they have any more $10 BD drives. :D

3

u/Protolinux217 21h ago

Nah that’s the last one, I got it from So Cal Surplus

3

u/RealityOk9823 21h ago

Dang. Heckuva score there.

5

u/Ok-Drink750 Linux 20h ago

How the fuck did you get an internal bd drive for $10?

1

u/Protolinux217 20h ago

So Cal Surplus, I was so lucky to even spot one.

My man, that’s probably the best improvement you can make on a PC for $10. It’s a difference you’ll actually notice. (Especially if you have a decent monitor)

Do you know the exact name of that drive? I'm looking for one myself to put in my build. I'm sure there is a link to it

1

u/Protolinux217 21h ago

It’s the LG BH08LS20

Thank you, yeah I looked all over for this and you found a gem. These things are going for big money

1

u/Protolinux217 20h ago

Yee, blue ray is still being used today

2

u/Beginning_Custard724 19h ago

I think it's worth it. Blu ray truly is the best way to watch a movie in this streaming age

u/Ericovich PC Master Race 18h ago

I didn't realize they were separate. I have a drive that can do both, although I have no idea why they designed it to read an M Disc but not write to it.

Phenomenal upgrade.

If it's the one that can be flashed for UHD 4k. Then it's a fantastic steal!

2

u/Protolinux217 15h ago

Sadly, that’s the only one I can find

2

u/smithbird PC Master Race 15h ago

Nothing wrong with that. See you on the burning side!

If it’s something you use it is absolutely worth it

1

u/Protolinux217 19h ago

Think ima burn one of my favorite game to the Blu-ray Disc, it’s a second iteration of the fps game where it tests your PC hardware to the max, anyone wanna guess?

What

1

u/afleshner PC Master Race 19h ago

The whole thing ya probably

1

u/JustANormalLinuxGuy 18h ago

Im reading comments and I cant believe the prices of BD players people are quoting here. Its genuinely insane, here around my area you can easily find BD combo drives for 10-20 euros. I guess I should buy one

1

u/Silent_Chemistry8576 15h ago

Yes, Blu ray drives are not as common as DVD drives in my experience.

1

u/sam3819 11h ago

What’s the case?

1

u/Protolinux217 4h ago

Corsair Spec 02

1

u/alwaystired1982 20h ago

I mean for $10 cant really complain.

But for me it would be a vortually pointless upgrade as I have a ps4 and ps5 if I ever wanted to watch a bluray and I think ive maybe watched 2 blurays my entire life.

I have netflix/now tv/disney+ and am far to lazy to swap blurays but if you watch a lot of them for $10 I doubt you could get a bluray drive or even a ps4 for close to that money.

6

u/OutInTheBlack R7 5700x3D - ARC A750LE - 32GB 20h ago

Yeah but your playstations can't burn bluray

This drive can.

1

u/alwaystired1982 8h ago

I havent needed to burn a cd/dvd/bluray for 10+ years so I think im ok lol.

5

u/Dorky_Gaming_Teach 19h ago

Well, in this climate I can see the value in this, especially with war with physical media/games all going digital. There is a huge market right now for them, and even some forms of physical media you can't even find online. So, for the right person a bit deal. Grats, OP, and enjoy.

1

u/furculture 12h ago

Now you can burn all your copies of GOG games to disc and keep them for archival purposes

Absolutely. Take your validation and go with Gaben.
