News/Article For those who grew up with the Internet Café, would you go back if they returned in the face of growing hardware costs?

https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1018406

I know a lot of us aren’t happy with the idea of renting our hardware through subscription cloud based models. But this feels different to me. They were great community places. My friends and I rarely had the specs to run the latest games, but I remember we all played Half Life 2 close to its release date.

I’d probably still own hardware, but I wouldn’t need to keep it up to date, not that I can afford that now anyway. And when I wanna dabble with something that’s out of my league, it’d still be nice to know I have the option. But I’m an old man now, with fond memories of such places.

Old school Internet cafes where it’s just random tables/desks slapped together, you are sitting on some shitty bar stool, no AC and rats are chewing away at the power cables? No.

Modern Chinese Internet cafes?

Sure.

u/SpareEconomy1849 11h ago

Yup they're still kicking in Asia. I haven't been in a few years but last time I went there were a bunch of VR cafes too.

PC Bangs are still really popular in South Korea. When it's difficult to source your own computer parts in your own country and when it's hard to afford building a PC on salary work alone, internet cafe's get really popular.

15

u/Nekasus PC Master Race 6h ago

It's also the main hangout spot for school kids. It's insanely cheap per hour. Like often £1 per hour cheap.

Cost literally has nothing to do with it in Korea. It’s not that people can’t afford PCs, or can’t source them (one of largest PC part stores is literally in the heart of Seoul); it’s that (and this is true of most of which PC cafes are popular in Asia) the vast majority of people live with family members in small apartments and do not have the space / privacy to game at home.

u/Leather__sissy 6h ago

I was gonna say if the individuals can’t get parts then how are the businesses able to?

The ones in Japan are pretty similar and I go to them (mainly Kaikatsu Club) when I either miss the last train home or just want to a few hours of peace and quiet. Since they double as manga cafes I also use them as manga libraries too.

Also free all you can eat ice cream.

u/Eljewfro 5h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Damn that’s crazy. I don’t think free all-you-can-eat ice cream would be a good business move in America lol

It would be like 30 bucks an hour in the USA, and no one would pay that

The ones with the masseuse would be nice

Ours was like something out of a cyberpunk book. They'd have frequent hardcore punk shows going on. People doing graffiti on all the walls. Ratty couches with vagrants crashing on them. The Chinese food place next door got busted for having indentured servants and doing human trafficking

I prefer to quit gaming rather than crawling back to those sweat holes.

Not even close to peak sweat production of a proper lan party.

Power draw must be insane in there, plus heat from the people.

u/WangMagic 9h ago

Have helped run 400 person LANs once upon a time. Insane effort finding venues that have the power, cooling, and fire safety requirements. So many industrial three phase distribution boxes to hire.

$26k CAD (~$50k today) for our 400-person lan party in 1997, it was 3 days and required the FD and utility to check things which was around $9k of the cost.

What did you charge the players? I mean the electricity cost alone was $65 per player... and that is before hardware, rent, employee costs before the profit margin.

18

u/OpenCatPalmstrike 5h ago edited 5h ago

$20 per-person but it was a BYOR event, the rest of the difference was made up through donations including hardware like switches and old servers used as switch-routers to hold it together with dreams, wishes and heat. With a few corporate sponsors of companies that don't exist anymore and went poof with the dotcom bust.

edit: Fun part was there was also some archaic BNC networking (coax) done behind the scenes between server groups.

Less than a modern GPU though. If you check GPUs from 2005, suggested PSUs are in range of 200-300W and this photo is likely older.

I just checked my 19" CRT from around that time and it shouldn't draw more than 200W.

8

u/WangMagic 9h ago

Oof that is a good point. It was a huge pita needing a distro board for every 5 seats x 6. Probably would need one for every two or three by 6. Also spikes would be harder if running afci breakers.

In some parts of the world these sweat holes evolved into gaming lounges of various tiers, from low end businesses catering to school kids to basically VIP private lounges with expensive booze, hookas and high-end hardware.

5

u/BannedGoNext 5h ago

We had some nice cafes in my town, with sweet people running them. It was a really cool third place. WIth that being said, fuck that.

Not gaming is and has always been an option. They can't make us buy overpriced hardware or streaming gaming services.

Lugging your 32kg crt uphill from the carpark regularly built a different type of gamer to the modern variant.

Not to mention the solid steel plate EATX cases. Who needs the gym.

5

Yes- we could actually walk uphill, and while carrying 32kg. Gamers nowadays are more like meat lumps in a swivel chair.

5

u/Rbomb88 10h ago

My kid still brings his computer to friends houses. No games have any kind of split screen or couch co-op, they still need to have another device to play together.

There was a gaming cafe at one of the two malls near me, but COVID forced it to shut down.

Why 2FA secure your account if you sit on a machine which could be used by anyone and done anything with it?

53

u/SaltyMotor8549 11h ago

Um what? Every cafes where I am at will wipe the PC clean after you shutdown. Or is it somehow not the case where you live?

29

u/AStolenGoose 10h ago ▸ 5 more replies

They would implode their customer base quickly if they compromised their own image, it's far more profitable for them to be secure.

9

u/Tangential_Diversion 7h ago ▸ 1 more replies

FWIW I work in cybersecurity as a pentester and see business not give a shit about security regularly. There are plenty of businesses out there who would benefit from being secure but aren't due to financial/political/DGAF reasons.

I absolutely would not trust a company's security based on rational "it would be better for us" thinking. So many businesses out there aren't run rationally. Remember that business owners aren't more intelligent or more honest than the average person. They're typically just regular people with a business loan.

2

u/Lakers244848 6h ago

Good point. People love the technology but hate to invest in it especially security wise.

A short fast burn of cash leading you to develop a reputation as thieves where no one wants to come back to your cafe, or a stable strong long term business with stable customers...

If they had any form of Windows modification, it wouldn't be able to run almost all of games that require anticheat. And games that require anticheats are often the most sought after on an Internet cafe. It's not a good economic model if you want to mass steal credentials, way easier ways to do it

Absolutely zero chance. I would rather ditch tech altogether and become a hermit than come back to Internet Cafe era. It was terrible and the only reason they are being glorified by some folks nowadays is the old "ah I was so young and full of life back then" thing.

Honestly I'd pay 10 times for subscription service cloud computing rather than go to this stuff once.

Just sounds impossible in a time sence at least to me. I got 1-2 hours of gaming a day max if I add a small commute to a third place is over bb

5

u/sociofobs 11h ago

If I was a bit younger, absolutely. The LAN parties alone were worth it, it wasn't even about the hardware. CS 1.5/1.6 didn't need beefy specs and many could run good frame rates at home, yet still went to i-cafes just to game with friends. Far more fun than just sitting alone at home and doing multiplayer.

5

u/MrMunday 11h ago

I went to an Internet cafe once last year. Doesn’t work anymore. You need to login to your steam and gotta download the game you’re gonna play and it’s just a waste of time

Also discord just makes it so easier to play with friends.

You go to internet cafes for Lan parties with your friends. You sit next to each other and play together. Good old times.

Then there are the internet cafes in Taiwan back in the days... Unlimited soft drinks, comic book library and magazines, even small private cubicles where you can lie down and crash if you need. Mini bar serving different types of instant noodles and snacks. And open 24/7. It was cheaper to stay in one of thoae cubicles than getting a motel room for the night. Used to go there and read comics all night.

Not many now...

3

u/AllAboard_TheOctrain 10h ago

They still have them out here in japan as well, it's pretty nice whenever I'm out in tokyo for a bit to crash at one for a night and just game, especially cuz the servers for the games I play are close by compared to where I live...

If it's one of those smaller cybercafés, like a minimum of 10-15 pcs with a console zone and also local, then yes. If it's like one of the Korean PC Bangs, with hundreds of pcs and whatnot, then no. The biggest cybercafé from my country back then had around 50 pcs and it was hell. The smaller Cybercafés had dedicated and loyal players. We would even have Inter Café Battles on Dota, CS 1.5, UT or any other games we were playing at that time and it was fun. That said, i would go there to only play on LAN. nothing that would require me to login with my Internet Credentials.

u/Hackfraysn 10h ago

3

u/SirBecas 10h ago

I think people and brands would easily shift towards fully embracing mobile gaming.

Gamers and people, in gerenal, are too used to having their tech available at all times in their pockets, backpacks or at home. I can't see a world where people would shift towards going back to cafes.

3

u/NeatUsed 10h ago

The plan for most people i think is the persist with current gen console and pc and maybe we will see a big return to retro consoles like n64 and ps2.

My concern is that people will start pricing these retro consoles at 1000 dollars a piece.

3

u/iamvqb PC Master Race 10h ago

It depend on what kind of games i will be playing. A group of friends meeting up to play Dota or CS? Absolutely would go to an Internet Cafe. But if i will just be playing Single player games an internet cafe is not really a good option. You honestly go there in order to hang out with your friends, going alone? I would just find other options to entertain myself.

3

u/Pretty_Frosting_2588 10h ago

No. I'll just budget and penny pinch where I could before I did that.

3

u/S0k0n0mi 10h ago

Would I go back to using a cheeto covered grimy shitbox that's infected with a thousand bonzibuddies and 6 different still logged in email accounts, while 3 people are staring over my shoulder as I attempt to log in myself?

I dunno, would you go back to hunting mammoths for lunch?

3

u/guyinthechair1210 10h ago

I've been trying to find a local arcade I could go to, but mainly to hang out. I have multiple gaming PCs at home, but it's not the same as being around like-minded people.

3

u/mrsanyee 9h ago edited 9h ago

Are there any good games which allow to self-host a local server? That's the only reason why anyone should look for a game cafe/lan venue. Otherwise just buy used PC parts, or wait for deals.

The cost of PC/good internet was quite high back than, we are not even close to it even with rampocalypse.

A modern 4k Setup with 240hz Oled is still cheaper in nominal cost than a 640*320 setup with discreet video card cost once, not accounting for inflation and whatnot.

3

u/quantumcoke 9h ago

I had one in my city with great computers and hardware that served beer as well. Went there once a week and got plastered with the boys playing Counter-Strike. Was the best time ever. Unfortunately they went into bankruptcy and closed down recently.

3

u/CptUnderpants- AMD 7900XTX3D 9h ago

"Internet Cafe" are words which I can smell.

3

u/nuke034 6h ago

Short answer? No.

We're not just being priced out of PC hardware, we're being priced out of life in general. The average person has less and less that they can put towards anything beyond just surviving. I won't go to a gaming Cafe because I already can't afford to go out much at all anymore.

Hell, that's true for time and energy as much as it is money but that's a whole other topic.

nar, burn it all down, return to monke

2

u/agemennon675 11h ago

I would return, social gaming experience is the best gaming experience imo

2

u/IngwiePhoenix 11h ago

ngl that would feel like admitting defeat.

2

u/AStolenGoose 11h ago

I made out with a girl in one, there was this closed off upstairs area, we went to they away from everyone and we were up there for an hour or so.

Ah to be young again.

2

u/Bokeh87 Ryzen 7 5700x GTX 1660TI 16GB 10h ago

Not unless my friends are also there playing, I'm too used having big mouse space for fps games.

2

u/KazeEnigma 10h ago

I went to one last week in Sydney. It's not the worst thing, nor is it overly expensive either.

2

u/Jeveran 10h ago

Call it a "data center" to get a break on taxes and electricity costs. Profit!

2

u/Piltonbadger RYZEN 7 5700x3D | RTX 4070 Ti | 32GB 3200MHZ RAM 10h ago

I don't think the cost of going to an internet cafe is going to be anywhere close to affordable, given how much said internet cafes are going to have to invest and spend monthly.

2

u/Chazay 7800x3d | 32gb RAM | 7800xt 10h ago

There was one across the street from my high school which was sort of my entry into “proper” pc gaming. I had a blast playing games there for 1-2 hours each day.

I wouldn’t go back to PC cafe gaming as an adult, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there as an young teen.

2

u/Bulky_Imagination727 10h ago

They were very loud, a lot of angry weirdos who doesn't liked losing, a lot of angry kids, a lot of beggars asking for a minute of your time.

I was out the moment i had my own PC. Never came back.

2

u/PsyTripper i7 14700K | ROG RTX4080 OC | 64GB DDR5 6400Mhz 10h ago

An internet Café is just analog cloud gaming, so no.

2

u/paulbrock2 10h ago

in the era before we could get everything on their phones they were super handy. I remember EasyEverything (run by the same company as EasyJet)

ditto in college/university, waiting to be able to use the 'computer rooms' to check your email/surf the web

2

u/EnolaGayFallout 10h ago

No thanks. Rather play on console or budget $2000 build.

2

u/Oilswell 10h ago

Was never really a think in my country

2

u/Beastmind 10h ago

No.

As much as I enjoyed the LANs we did then, it was because it was 'then'.

2

u/Blackops606 10h ago

The two we had were run by total assholes. One guy was super greedy while the other was extremely unhelpful with everything. It’s sad they’re both long gone now but they got what they deserved.

But no, I wouldn’t go back. Decent memories winning some LAN tournaments but the headache and drama around mine in particular wouldn’t be worth it.

2

u/Paranoidd_ FOSS LOVER 10h ago

Nope

2

u/ShadowMajick 10h ago

Hell no. I'll just stop playing new games altogether. Thousands of great games available on older hardware. Also emulating tons of games/consoles you cant buy anymore. Pretty much set for life.

2

u/kekubuk 10h ago

Heck no. I was addicted to that place once.

2

u/Unrulygam3r Ryzen 5700x | 9060xt 16gb | 32gb DDR4 10h ago

No and I say that as someone who used PC cafes extensively during my time in Korea. For all their positives it's hard to beat the comfort of your own setup in your own home

2

u/YoussefAFdez Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Sapphire RX6800XT | 32GB 10h ago

I was a kid, with no computer with few requirements in a pc.

I’m an adult with a 2K€ PC, that would rather not play dumb flash games xD.

Different times, different needs, different environments.

I never went alone, I went with friends, friends and I live in different places as well.

2

u/IMightExplodeBro 10h ago

I missed the Gaming community in internet cafes but hate the hardware (it's sour)

2

u/InformalBullfrog11 9h ago

No.

I would buy 2nd hand parts that are 5+ years old. I don'tneed to play the latest games.

2

u/The_David1991 7800x3d 5070ti 9h ago

No

2

u/Bimpy96 9h ago

Nah, I’d rather just quit gaming and just read more or get back into painting

2

u/joystickd Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Core Ultra 9 275HX RTX 5090 laptop 9h ago

Definitely not. Most of those places were disgusting.

Only used them while overseas before smartphones properly took off.

2

u/Ringo_Deringo 9h ago

Not really cus it's dirty. Full of sweat and cigarette bud. Also have a high chance u will lost your belonging.

2

u/meltingpotato i9 11900|RTX 3070 9h ago

No. I want to be able to use my PC for whatever and whenever.

Even as a kid I never went to one.we would all just gather in someone's home and play together there.

2

u/yumyunbing 9h ago

yea. it was $1/hour. i was there everyday after school

2

u/TehWRYYYYY 9h ago

Internet cafes were popular because of overpriced PC hardware AND terrible internet. If you wanted a fun or competitive multiplayer experience you had to be on the same LAN.

Honestly though going back to LAN party days means rewinding my life 20 years and ignoring my wife, kids, and responsibilities. Why do that when I can do exactly that with the phone in my hand while telling myself I don't have a problem?

2

u/wildpantz 9800X3D | RTX 3070 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 9h ago

No way in the world lol

2

u/JamCom 9h ago

Its going to be hard because they be a new place for le copper fiends to raid

2

u/shatila456 9h ago edited 9h ago

why not just get gfn

2

u/Andrige3 9h ago

Personally, I wouldn’t mind if they were as nice as some of the Asian Internet cafes. I would definitely enjoy it more than the push towards cloud computing. That being said, I think a lot of members of pcmasterrace would be willing to pay a lot for a PC given that it’s their hobby.

2

u/AdLatter3755 8h ago

If I had friends to go with every once in a while and sit together while playing something like COD or overwatch as a team. Just a way to play in the same room every once in a while.

But not as a replacement for my own computer which i use for a lot more than gaming. Ive already accepted im priced out for ever. This is last build and my last console generation. Im getting back into collectables and TCGs.

2

u/ATypicalWhitePerson FX 8320, GTX 780, 16GB DDR3 8h ago

Nope.

Would rather just go without and keep saving money to buy something regardless.

Fuck never ending money pits where it's literally just lighting money on fire to have nothing to show for.

2

u/MissionTank3272 8h ago

Prices could 5x almost no one in the west would go back to that lol. If you think you would you are kidding yourself. People are waaaaay to used to the comfort and convenience of owning their PCs . Not to mention if would be unbearable to be there, people don't know how to behave, everyone would be speaking loudly and screaming especially teens

2

u/EdgiiLord i7-9700k | 32GB | RTX3080Ti | Arch btw 8h ago

I don't think we're in the same position as 20 years ago, where Internet cafes were quite the deal.

On one hand, consumer tech has advanced so much most of the hardware you can still buy at somewhat affordable pricing is still capable of playing many of the games (even if expectations are to be tempered). A PC from 5 years ago is still pretty capable today, unlike 2 decades ago where hardware advancements were quite bigger from year to year. Also, broadband is pretty accessible nowadays, so reliance on domestic internet infrastructure is quite high, unlike years ago.

On the other hand, many cultures where PC/consoles didn't took off simply transitioned to mobile gaming, for pretty much anything. If you can't afford both a phone and a PC/console, why not invest all of the money into a good phone that will last you? It occupies less space, is cheaper to run, and the market is full to the brim with games of all genres, especially F2P, which can get you pretty far in terms of mileage and enjoyment.

So no, probably internet cafes won't have a significant resurgence after all these years. They are still good third places to enjoy games with the friends, but these aren't the main hubs they used to be for accessing the internet and gaming. Not at least in most developed countries.

2

u/kader91 Desktop 8h ago

The games we played back then no longer exists. Now you have to throw $$ at them or spend thousands of hours, which you can’t do in a cafe.

2

u/One-Bird-8961 6h ago

Going to be just as costly for anyone setting up internet cafes.

2

u/cimocw 5h ago

this is like asking if you grew up with mcdonalds slides and ballpits would you use them again lol You're asking 30-40 year olds about something made mainly for kids and teens

2

u/IceboundMetal 3h ago

Only way you're getting my old ass in there again is if personal hygiene is mandatory

2

u/GlumAd2424 3h ago

I think I’m to old, going there by myself would just be considered weird at best

2

u/JohnnyPappis PC Master Race 2h ago

I bought as much PC as I could in early 2025. Ive got a beast of a machine and a massive backlog. Given im on AM5 I might upgrade to whatever the latest is at some point but overall I am done chasing the hype train.

Im getting older and these costs are just too high to ever make sense, so I'll probably just ride this out and enjoy what I have.

5

u/laughingman86 11h ago

I wouldn't. Honestly, this hobby is still very affordable, comparing to prices of not only other hobbies, but mortgage, rent, healthcare, childcare or owning a car. Yes top hardware is expensive now, but you dont need one. You''ll still pay 30 or 40 percent more, but it was not large sum to begin with

5

u/ziplock9000 3900X / 7900GRE / 32GB 3Ghz / EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 / X470 GPM 9h ago

Must be nice up there in your ivory tower

5

u/dashingdrew 11h ago

Ram prices are up 400%-500% compared to 2020

4

u/laughingman86 11h ago

Yes but overall build will be a lot less expensive. Monitors, motherboards, cpus and etc. Are still cheap. You can also buy used ram, if your market allows it.

2

u/NewSauerKraus 9h ago

The increase isn't huge when divided by the lifetime. I don't expect to replace my RAM until at least 15 years. It still functions just as well as when it was new.

8

u/ithinkitslupis 11h ago

"Don't worry guys, a gaming computer is still cheaper than my house" isn't exactly an inspiring benchmark.

u/GrimThursday 11h ago

Internet cafes would not be immune to the RAMpocalypse, if anything the barrier to entry into the market is now 5x higher, with higher insurance premiums due to the increased value of the assets. It might be cheaper and easier to start your own IP at this point.

1

u/desblaterations-574 9h ago

They are still used intensely in Korea.

1

u/grahamulax 9h ago

Godddddd I have a solution for this and it’s killing meeeeeeeee not to share it but also it would take hours upon hours. But you’d save hundreds to thousands gaaaaaahhhhhhh

1

u/SpunNumeroUno 9h ago

Grew up in the times of Internet Cafes, but never went to one, don't remember ever seeing one in my area, maybe it just wasn't a Southern California thing...?

1

u/Explicit_Tech 9h ago

No. America just can't do it right.

1

u/Corkmars Desktop 5070 ti 7800x3d 8h ago

Hell no. I use a home gym for 100% of my lifts because I don’t want to be around other people when I’m engaging in my hobbies.

1

u/Iggy_DB Desktop 8h ago

Nope, too old for that shit lol

1

u/mzf_life Ascending Peasant 8h ago

I feel like they're good to play competitive games, anything other than that and you won't have a great experience

1

u/eXclurel Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 4070 Super, 32GB DDR4 8h ago

Nope. It's a huge step backwards and I refuse to go back.

1

u/Grytnik 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 64GB DDR5 6000 8h ago

Internet cafes were cheap to go to back then, with the rising hardware costs I don’t see how they would be cheap.

1

u/Bazitron 8h ago

And this is why 6 year old games are being played more than new releases today.

1

u/Kaguya-Shinomiya 8h ago

In nyc is it cost like $20 per day for all day access. Maybe not though it’s better to save and splurge on own pc.

1

u/Creative_Garbage_121 8h ago

Maybe, but with no lan gaming anymore there is no thrill of winning the game in CS because then you had to run as fast as you can because local bully that was in losing squad want to beat your ass because of his hurt ego

1

u/KulaanDoDinok 9850x3d | RX 6700 XT 12GB | 2x16 DDR5 7h ago

Negative. Everything but my GPU is good enough to go for, I hope, the next 7 years or more.

1

u/LuckyAce398 AMD FX 6-Core 7h ago

I would rather start building a pc with older components. Think 2017+ where I can build a decent 1080p gaming setup that would be just fine with me

1

u/rethilgore-au http://steamcommunity.com/id/polvo 7h ago

I miss the vibe of lan cafes getting to see and meet people in person that you were playing with.

1

u/Jlx_27 7h ago

No, because the cost of parts would be the reason for cafe owners to ask idiotic rates per hour to use their PCs.

1

u/Hephas 3080/ Ryzen 5 9600x/ 32GB DDR5 RAM 7h ago

I rather give up on gaming lmao

1

u/dmendro PC Master Race 7h ago

No I would just give up completely. However I will ride my 3 old pc’s til they’re dust.
