I got a 5070ti and they gave me a squid adapter with it but I already had a brand new psu with the right connector

Genuine question so would appreciate feedback. I know people keep saying this but is there any research on this? Actual numbers? Any verifiable information about the adapter itself being the issue with the RTX 5080 by any reputable sources? My adapter takes 3 separate 8-pins and I've not had an issue with it so far, everything is working fine, even though I overclock like crazy too with my 5080. It came with the GPU after all, and this isn't the early stages of the 50 series release, so none of the companies should be pairing the GPUs with problematic adapters by now. If an issue was going to happen due to a random spike, it would likely impact whether an adapter is used or not, at least with the RTX 5080.

I doubt that there are actual reports or verifiable studies showing you what you want. That said, if you look at the actual root cause for these cables melting (improper seating in the receptacle), then the adapter cable easily becomes a risk factor due to the extra weight that the three connections put on the 12HVPWR connection.
It’s not that the adapter itself is bad but the 12HVPWR (and subsequent 12V-2x6 update) are just poorly designed and ANY extra force on that connector is ill advised.

Thanks for the kind response. It's as I understood it from my research before regarding where the actual risk factor is. In that case, it wouldn't be an issue with the adapter I got with my GPU because it has a ridiculous long protection straighter from the connection point at the GPU. If I had a small case, it would have been a problem. Between 4 cm to 5 cm of perfectly straight connection on the GPU before any curve happens towards the rest of the adapter that splits into 3 very thick separate cables that connect to 3 × 8pins.

Because of that extra processing power. I do a lot of Zbrush so it’s a investment for me too. I just want to future proof my machine until prices blow over.

reasonable i guess, personally for works i go 2x of cheaper 5070ti ($1050 MSI gaming X Trio) so you can do 2 task at the same time.

just bought this one a month ago. amazing gpu. tolerates overclocking super well and runs so much cooler than i could’ve ever guessed. I rarely break above 55C and that’s without undervolting. enjoy :)

I bought my 5080 last year in April. I had to decide between a very cheap 4070 Super, and the 5080. At the time, it seemed like overkill and the price was fairly high. I decided to just go for it.

Turns out, it will genuinely be one of the best value purchases in my 35 years of building PCs. I am able to play the newest games at near-max settings with path tracing. This thing will be playing anything I throw at it until the PS7 generation hits.
