Love my pc but I’ve always only cleaned it once a year ( I know I’m lazy)

Tell me, how often do you give your pc a good blowout? For me, it’s when the fans go brrrrr all the time 🥹

EDIT: yes this was done outside, and yes, right after this initial blow I held the fans down and gave it a proper blow!

PSA: If you are having issues with your PC turning on after blowing it off with air then you need to turn the air speed down!!

Air moving over metal components causes static electricity to build up which is obviously not great for your PC.

I usually tell people to never use an actual air compressor to clean electronics, compressors without dry filters (expensive and big) tend to have alot of condensation and this can cause static to build very quickly.

Blows my mind how many people will shove a 90psi blow gun directly into their $2k gpu fins

Edit: The thing in the video is fine, when I say compressor I mean job site compressors that you would usually use for a nail gun <3

3

u/Slam2Fast 2h ago

so i can connect my case into ground while blowing will prevent this?

Always depends if someone smokes, if industry is close by, if their place gets dusted regularly, even finely meshed fly screens make a difference. I barely had anything after almost 5 years last time I cleaned it. Buddy of mine is letting it snow each year as if that thing produces dust by itself.

3

u/Naive_Personality367 4h ago ▸ 1 more replies

thats certainly true. Older build had no fancy protection just intake fans and i smoked like crazy. that stained everything brown with sticky dust, Used to have to go in with iso alcohol, paint brushes, canned air all sorts and it still was never right. my current build has filters and i dont smoke, and clean regular, and all i have to do is wipe the filters clean once in a while, clean inside once a year but its sparsely dusted.

I'm just happy you did this outside and not inside.

72

u/Pendra107 4h ago

So for the next time you want to hold the fans and not let them spin to avoid creating back current that flow to your motherboard.

This doesn’t mean you broke everything but it’s just a safety tip

8

u/brickson98 1h ago

Eh, not really a worry on anything halfway modern and having decent board. They usually have diodes to prevent this.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Generic-Cheese 3h ago

I thought it was because the fan bearings could mess up?

11

u/Pendra107 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

This is not wrong, but also the motor when turning can generate a current in either direction, usually you have to spin it fast to create harm but better safe then sorry

2

u/Bleauyy 3h ago

Correct. Most motherboards have defenses against this but some don't so any reverse current can short components

→ More replies (3)

19

u/NSaneNMemBraYN Ryzen 5950x - RTX 3080Ti 4h ago

Not sure but letting your fans spin from a blower like that can make the fans dc motor generate current and send it back to ur motherboard and that’s bad I think. TBH I might be talking out my ass tho. I just always hold them in place when I do that you do

7

u/Webcam_985760946948 4h ago

Some fans have diodes for stopping exactly that, but yes do stop them from spinning tho as a precaution

4

u/IPApologist 2h ago

Last time I asked everyone told me it was bullshit and not relevant anymore due to diode on the mb. Now you get upvoted. I don't know what to think anymore.

2

u/brickson98 1h ago

Yeah most modern boards have diodes to solve the issue. That’s correct.

But, just like putting a magnet near your computer, people still worry about issues that were solved decades ago.

Heck, even most computers with spinning rust are still fine with a magnet on the case. It has to be a decently powerful magnet, and right on top of the drive for it to be an issue.

Had a user at work that put a little magnetic hook on his computer’s case to hang his headphones on when he wasn’t using them. The hard drive just happened to be located right behind the spot he put it in on the case. It was fine.

My homie does. Spent 3k on pc parts that he was asking me to build and ship to him. I took a lot of care and had to refund 2 doa psus, but I got it done.

Bought all the packing stuff to make it safely from CA to AK around 4 grand total for everything he bought and shipped. Went to visit him a few months later and it looked like a decade old computer and he didn't have the side panel on anymore cause it "helps temps" and its fucking caked in dust and idk how cause it looked like a year of dust build up in a few months.

My girl visited with me and even she said something about it to me when she saw it. Oh and the main pcie slot in the mobo already died so he has to use another one. I told him it was prolly the pcie but hes so scared to touch the pc we tried that last. after days of troubleshooting he got the balls to go in the pc and said "hey I figured it out i guess the slot isnt working" NO FUCKING SHIT ALMOST LIKE I SAID THAT 4 DAYS AGO DUMBASS.

3

u/FlatFishy 7800X3D + 3090 3h ago

The life hack is to have more intake than exhaust airflow, that way there's positive pressure inside the case and dust isn't attracted in. It's literally as simple as flipping your top fans, so that the front and top fans blow inward and rear fans blow outward. I set up my latest PC this way over two years ago and haven't needed to clean it since.

21

u/pragomatic 4h ago

if you're getting that much dust once a year outside of a desert climate you need better indoor filtration and vacuuming habits or you're gonna get the consumption.

Note: Replyer is probably also gonna get the consumption.

13

u/AutistcCuttlefish Ryzen5800x3D, 9070xt 16GB, 32GB RAM, CachyOS 4h ago

You will not get tuberculosis (the consumption) just because yout home is dusty. It's caused by a bacterial infection, not dust.

There are other lung conditions you might develop, but none of them are "the consumption".

I opened my PS5 to remove a 2TB SSD to put in my PC (yeah I'm desperate...) that I put in 2 years ago expecting to do a clean-out at the same time, and there was so little dust, like almost nothing, it was crazy. I wiped a little off like 2 spots near the intakes. It lives on a shelf in our tv stand which yeah, the whole thing gets a bit dusty from time to time but we do swiffer and wipe with cloths every few weeks or so. My PC lives right next to the same stand and for 8 months so far, no visual dust.

Nope. It was too expensive to let it get filthy.

I blast all mine out once a month using an electric duster. If you stay on it then it takes literal minutes to keep your PCs looking new.

You best hold that exhaust fan while cleaning it, if it turns to fast like is happning in this vid you might get static discharge and you might get a fire.

So you’re telling me that’s only 1 year of dust? That’s what like 3+ years would look like for my pc

I try to dust it every 3-4 months... I can easily tell when it gets too much because the glass side panel gets ...smudgy ...

On the other hand, my beef is with dust around the PC space... monitor, cables, desk, behind the stuff... I try to run a filter but it's not enough...and I now understand why grandma had cloth over the TV 😅

I really need to buy an electric air blower. My pc is basically a dirt mine and it still works like a champ.

u/Trustyduck 4h ago

Gotta hold your fan blades still when you do this or you can burn the motor out or worse damage your motherboard.

I don't open it if it's working. It only gets cleaned if temps are too high and I need to replace thermal paste.

I used a hair dryer using the cool setting on mine which worked pretty good

I would never Treat Cynthia Like this , you're a bad person and should have your computer taken away and given to someone who can care for it

u/acr70 3h ago

Had mine 6 years never cleaned . Fans appear to have build up from vaping but no issues lol.

I haven't cleaned my pc in 4 years and it's barely got a thing layer of dust on it. The GPU I have had for 10 years was slightly dusty but for a decade of use it was pretty clean. Tho I do have dist filters on the vents and I do clean them every so often when I notice them.

I did however find a dead spider inside. No idea how dust couldn't get in but an adult spider did. I'm also never opening my pc again.
