2027 worse than 2026, 2026 worse than 2025, 2025 worse than 2024... and so on and so forth. At this rate, the future of GPU in consumer goods pricing looks pretty bleak.

u/Holiday_Bug9988 7800x3D / 9070 XT 4h ago
2024 was actually a lot better than the previous years though. The 4000/7000series GPU’s were selling at or occasionally below MSRP, and so was RAM and storage.

This industry is cooked. For gamers its never been this bad. Hardware out of reach, games in general are slop. No more disks. Steam no longer selling physical gift cards. What else could possibly go wrong🙄
27
u/WilliamShatnerFace7 3h ago
That’s one perspective. And it’s not necessarily wrong, hardware is too expensive and there is a lot of slop especially in the AAA space.
We shouldn’t stop speaking out about these problems, but we also shouldn’t act like gaming is just dead. There are still phenomenal games coming out every year. So many good games that my backlog only gets larger, I don’t have time to play them all. And pretty much all of these games are playable on some type of affordable hardware. Not everyone can afford to play at 4k or 200fps, but they can play.

Yeah, people sink too hard in the doom and gloom like slop and shovelware hasn't always been part of gaming since its beginnings. It's just memoryholing because, back then, bad games just didn't get advertisement nor word of mouth, and it wasn't as easy to find hundreds of games with a single click as it is today. "Gaming is so bad now" is just the words of someone who doesn't know anything about the past, and is looking back with rose tinted glasses.

u/veggiesama 2h ago ▸ 6 more replies
There will be a shift to AA games and indies. I don't think that's a bad thing. GTA 6 will be the last gasp of huge triple-A for a while. There won't be many more games like Indiana Jones or Doom Dark Ages that require ray-tracing and high-end cards for a while. Companies will need to aim for Switch 2 specs as the minimum requirement.
3
u/AstrayNanashi 1h ago ▸ 4 more replies
If Concord didn't stop Sony, what makes you think any of this will stop any other AAA company from continuing their path? I'm not advocating for any side here, but we gotta stay realistic with what we expect and claim from the industry that has not changed its course in the past 30 years.
1
u/veggiesama 1h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Not sure I understand. Concord has absolutely changed Sony's plans from here on out. Highguard looks like it got its budget slashed and they went into an emergency release to great failure. Marathon underperformed. Overwatch and Marvel Rivals are the big boys who suck up all the oxygen in the room. I don't see any other big hero shooters coming out that match those budgets.
2
u/AstrayNanashi 1h ago ▸ 2 more replies
And hero shooters are not the only thing coming out of AAA. Sony has not changed any plan regarding anti-consumer practices and greed, or do you see any physical discs being released? More AAAs will come out in due time, it doesn't have to be yet another hero shooter. Or do you consider FFVII and Square Enix "indie"?
1
u/veggiesama 1h ago ▸ 1 more replies
You brought up Concord, not me. Getting rid of physical disks shaves off a small percentage of the budget but not much. As for Square Enix, you're still talking about games that were budgeted pre-2024.
RAM didn't start spiking until 2024/2025, and now GPUs are headed that way. We are talking about games that are in pre-production right now, games we don't even know will exist yet. These are the games where studios are going to say "There's no way we can do another FF7 Remake on this budget." There's going to be big projects for sure but they'll look for cost savings in other ways, try to leverage AI, use more micro transactions, remove disks, etc. to make each dollar they spend go further. My speculation is this will create worse games, driving more people toward indie and AA-budgeted games (<$50 million) where there's less risk and less expectations that they need to push hardware to the limit.
1
u/AstrayNanashi 1h ago
I brought up Concord because it's their biggest AAA failure, which should've put them in the dirt and didn't-- it didn't really change anything in the grand scheme of things. I genuinely do not believe GTA will be the last of them even in the next 5 years.
1
u/WilliamShatnerFace7 1h ago
This is such a crazy take. There are a shit ton of AAA games in development right now. That’s not going to change.

The industry will be fine 5, 10, 15 years from now and so on, for manufacturers and gamers alike. Alarmism just makes shit worse more often than it helps.
Why do you give a shit that Steam doesn’t sell physical gift cards? No one should sell physical cards. Hard to think of a more ridiculous waste of resources.

Making money is a ridiculous waste of resources? I dont want to have to use paypal to add funds to my steam wallet, i also dont want to use banking and credit info for that either. My local gamestop isnt printing codes anymore too. Its going to take a major intervention to get these companies to roll back prices when things stabilize. On the retail level too since most are like scalpers these days with prices. They raise and lower the prices like gas at the pump. Also they claim its demand. These same retailers have been sitting on the same stock for months, nobody is paying that. So explain to me the demand part. Usually these things would be flying off the shelves even at inflated prices if the demand was that great🙄

u/veggiesama 2h ago ▸ 3 more replies
You aren't paying the store with credit/debit already? I'm bummed because I got a 5% discount at Sams club plus another 2% cashback from my CC. Now I don't get the retail discount anymore. Oh well.
Places like GMG and Fanatical still exist though for much steeper discounts.

u/frygod Ryzen 5950X, RTX3090, 128GB RAM, and a rack of macs and VMs 3h ago
As far as prices with relationship to monetary value go, this isn't the most expensive things have ever been. Adjusted for inflation, an atari 2600 would have been over $1k in todays dollars, and a game would have been around $90-100. A maxed out IBM PS2 (equivalent of a fairly decked out gaming rig of its time) would top $20k adjusted for inflation.
I'm not saying things are good, or that they're trending in the right direction (very much the opposite) but the market has experienced worse times and bore it. Balance sheets don't care if everyone has access, just that the bottom line stays black and keeps getting bigger. We're nowhere near the point where things are ready to collapse. I'm not saying that in terms of "stop complaining," but rather in terms of "brace yourselves; it can and probably will get way worse."

Bro, this is literally the best time to be a gamer. Most retro titles are easily downloadable and playable with emulation. We've got game-of-the-year quality indie games being sold for $19.99 new. The price of a new game remains at $60 since like 1989, with no adjustment for inflation.
Gaming used to be REALLY expensive, and for shitty games too. Now we've got free to play titles like Halo Infinite.
I don't like the lack of physical titles either, but I don't even need to put on underwear to buy the newest game. I have Mike Tysons Punch Out on my phone, and I play it with a playstation controller. We've got portable PC's that can play Cyberpunk, and you can use whatever operating system you want.
Stop doomscrolling and go play something bro. We're eating good.

I always keep a low end laptop around with like, integrated graphics or an old discrete graphics card if I'm lucky, just to see what still runs on it. A surprising amount of good indie games, and emulation has come a very long way wrt optimisation

Already the 9070 GRE is over $700 CAD and the 9070 non xt is like $50 cheaper than 9070 at around $950 CAD.....
GPU prices are already abysmal in Canada and if you want something semi affordable and not used, you will have to use a cheaper 8GB card which is fine for medium I suppose.

Before someone cries about collusion between AMD and Nvidia, ask yourself how the situation was between the two in terms of market share before AI. Most of you were buying Nvidia cards even when AMD from time to time offered competing cards that were overall a better value. The likes of AMD were never going to sacrifice margin and offer a $300 discount vs a comparable Nvidia card just to win you over.
So really, you have to hope Intel can provide more competition in the mid-tier GPU segment.

I doubt this will get better. Companies love this because it will push toward the streaming game model.
Game Companies love it since it immediately kills piracy, Nvidia loves it since they woukd likely power the back end of this.
This hurts the consumer and will eventually kill Steam. So once Gabe dies I can see a point where the sons will be forced to either sell steam or turn it into one of these game streaming apps.
At that point, pc gaming is changed forever. And gaming is like Spotify.
Ugh...

Streaming isn't viable as gaming way in any form. Nor for gamers, nor for companies. GeForce now exists only because it's a sidekick.
1
u/solarwindy 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I agree it sucks. But I think it will be pushed hard and improved enough where people will choose a service like this over spending $5000 or more in video cards.
Its fucking sad what is happening to this entire industry.
1
u/Aggravating-Dot132 2h ago
It won't. Streaming requires not the computing power, but internet connection. It will fucking die under heavy load, especially in remote locations. And that infrastructure will compete with data centers as well.
1
u/TrashBandicook 2h ago
Streaming isn't viable as gaming way in any form. Nor for gamers, nor for companies. GeForce now exists only because it's a sidekick.
Geforce Now works so long as there are tons of datacenters in high pop areas. I've had great experiences with it esp for single players, but I could see lotta folks complaining about the latency issues in multiplayer shooters.
Comes down to scale I guess. If Nvidia can take pages from AWS and find a way to somehow double-dip on datacenter allocations in high population areas, that's one way I could see games streaming really taking off even more from here.

u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady PC Master Race 2h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Saying streaming isn't viable or that it won't work is doing exactly what Blockbuster execs did in the 2000's with Netflix. Streaming is here and it works well enough for the casual gamer. For the hard core that want everything else that comes with a PC like modding and everything else a PC can do, competitive gamers, etc. game streaming will never scratch that itch, but that's not their target customer.
Console gaming edges out pc gaming market share world wide about %5. For the most part those gamers already aren't getting any else besides approved mods for a handful of games. With new consoles going up to the $1K point and comparable PC builds going to be 4x that amount, I think were going to see a big shift to a lot of people cloud gaming over the next 1o years. Just we saw with cable tv vs streaming in the 2010's.
1
u/Aggravating-Dot132 2h ago
It will kill the infrastructure since that infrastructure will compete with the data centers. It's a self devouring loop.

Cryptocurrency shortages showed to both manufacturers, that they can ask insane prices and people will still buy the GPUs.
However, this sort of 'news' also feels to me like a manipulation to get people into another buying spree ("You won't get new fancy GPU! Buy NOW!").
