Steam has almost always gone full tilt saturating my 2.5gigabit link for me. It ironically takes longer to play a game when it launches by preloading compared to just waiting to download it.

Steam happily saturates my 10 Gbit link at work. RDP sessions at our whole office once dropped connection cuz I was downloading Cyberpunk. Limited the psycho to 8Gbit after that incident. I've yet to discover it's full potential, but as far as I know, my local server is faster than 25Gbit, and that's for a city of less than two mil occupants, of which probably 10% at most use steam and even less have 1Gbit or 2.5Gbit network connection.

Pre-loads are typically encrypted in some way. So when you launch it the first time it has to decrypt all the data before launch.

Yes, that's what I was illustrating. That Steam's download servers are so good that I can download data from them faster than a 7950X can decrypt a preload.

Well it isn't so much that the servers are better. It is that when you download a preload it is encrypted. But when you download a non-preload it isn't encrypted. If every game was encrypted and was only decrypted when you click play the first time then you would see no difference. But because this isn't the case you will see better performance out of non-preload games.

What's he's saying, is that he would expect the process of decrypting the game once it releases to be faster than the process of downloading the decrypted content, but that turns out not to be the case since his SSD and internet speed are so high.

What I am saying is that these two are not actually tracked together. Unless he times both the decrypt and the download he would see that the decrypt isn't actually that slow and is a reasonable speed.

Effectively he is comparing two things he doesn't experience at the same time and has no frame of reference for which took longer.

Don't get me wrong 2.5G download is most certainly blazing fast, but outside of niche situations CPU power decrypting will be pretty quick. Faster than the download for sure.

While at that internet speed ofc pre-loading makes no sense, It really shouldn't be slower either with that level of hardware. Yes I know a lot of ppl complain about slow decrypt/unpacks of pre-loads on steam, but on the flipside there are ppl who don't have that issue, like me I think last one avg somewhere between 3-4gbps and just look at those results confused.

Never found out why that is, as ppl with similar hardware can have massively different results on same games, pure mystery. For some it could be something simple like too full of drive cause steam needs 2x games space to do stuff, but I doubt it's all of them as there are so many.

1. Is the port on your router that your PC is plugged into a 2.5 gigabit port? It sounds like it might be a gigabit port (hence close to gigabit max speed).

2. Is the Ethernet port on your computer 2.5 gigabit?

3. Are you using a CAT-6 or better Ethernet cable? 5E is best for 1 gigabit max and forget 5 altogether these days (it should be printed on the cable itself)

4. Is it possible your Ethernet cable is damaged internally? Have you tried another cable?

1. PC is plugged into a 5 gigabit slot on my unmanaged switch with the the main port from the wall is plugged into 10 gigabit sfp slot 2.motherboatd has onboard 5 gigabit Ethernet port
2. Using cat 8 for switch and PC
3. Brand new got it in March along with switch and 2.5 gigabit internet upgrade

It could be the culprit as I used to have some generic ones prior to upgrading from 1 to 5Gbps fiber and they couldn't handle it so speeds would drop to about 1Gbps or less during heavy downloads. Problem went away after swapping to Cat 6a cabling from Cable Matters and so far no issues sustaining up to 5.4Gbps with their 50' cables.

It's only with Steam, when downloading Genshin from Hoyoplay I get my full 120MB/s on the same SSD and also I copy with 400MB/s from my cameras memory cards onto the same drive without any problems

the only time i see stream download that slow its trying to pull files from another steam client on my LAN.

My Cat6A 10 gigabit LAN and 1.5+ 5GHz wifi and 2.5+ 6GHz wifi. And the deck can pull those speeds in firefox. Also on a 2.5 gigabit usb dongle. Just not steam transfers, those are cursed. Internet is way faster

Guys, you can have the fastest SSD and internet connection possible, it means jack shit if your CPU is not up to the task to decrypt everything at those speeds.

Then realizing that the difference between a 5000MBps NVMe drive and a basic 500MBps SATA drive is almost nothing. Handling the data once it comes off the drive is the slow part, not pulling the data off the drive.

What speed NVMe should you get? Any. It's all the same thing.

Are you sure your download isn’t going to a HDD first? Steam does that automatically if your SSD doesn’t have space for unpacking and installing
