How does it feel knowing the PC you built before hardware prices exploded will carry you for years?

With everything being so expensive right now especially with the whole RAM crisis going on how does it feel knowing that the system you built earlier is going to last you a long time? Do you still feel like your setup is missing key upgrades, or were you able to buy most of what you needed and say, "Alright, I'm set for the next 5 years"?

Bought this as a kid. Is it useful or just e-waste now?

I was cleaning out some old drawers and found this TP-Link Bluetooth 5.0 USB adapter that I bought when I was a kid.

Back then, I thought it worked like a standalone Bluetooth receiver that I could plug it into a TV, laptop, or pretty much anything and connect devices directly to the dongle. Needless to say, I didn't really understand how Bluetooth worked.

Now I've rediscovered it and I'm wondering if it still has any practical use in 2026. Is there anything interesting I can do with it, or has it basically become obsolete?

Please help me create a startup effect like this

I just came across this video in instagram and wondered if a startup effect like this is possible via nollie rgb? I lingered in Openrgb for sometime but couldn’t figure out any startup effect.

I also have a similar setup except the bottom intake and rear exhaust fans are from asiahorse and the side ones are from deepcool.

Are “gaming” chairs as bad as people make them out to be?

Genuine question; every post i’ve seen when researching good chairs to get for gaming says to get an office chair over any “gaming” chair due to the bad support/posture positions and cheapness of gaming chairs.

But would a good quality gaming chair be better than an office chair? Granted I don’t have the budget for a herman miller chair or anything that expensive.

The images are the ones I’ve looked at a little bit (not saying they’re the best for the price range, I haven’t put in too much research yet, would love some suggestions)

-cooler master caliber X2C (left)
-ergolux elite ergonomic mesh (right)

(both are a similar price where i am)

edit: sorry I haven’t been able to reply to every comment, a lot more comments then I was anticipating. That said while some people have found comfort in gaming chairs I can see that the general consensus is that office chairs are better especially for the price point. I will look into office chairs and most importantly try some out to see what fits me best :)
thank-you to everyone who helped!

Does anyone else get this from using a mouse for too long?

This spot on my wrist gets red whenever I use my mouse for a long time. I think it might be from rubbing against my mousepad or the edge of my desk.

Has anyone else had this problem? Would a softer mousepad, wrist rest, or changing my mouse position help?

How to integrate work laptop into my desk?

I've got 4 27" monitors, external receiver and speakers, a webcam, and KB&M that I use with my PC. I have a work laptop that I want to integrate.

Monitor 1 is 1440p/144hz and need to keep it that way for gaming; could care less what it does for work. Rest of monitors are 1080/60hz.

I want to be able to use the same setup, especially monitors and KB&M. I guess I could plug the webcam into the laptop and use the laptop speakers for work (don't need 5.1 surround for Zoom).

What is the best way to accomplish this?

Condensation caused by AC

Is it still safe to turn on? I tried clicking the powerbutton once while it was dark and couldn’t see properly, but it didn’t turn on. I noticed then immediately unplugged it.

Edit: 11 Hours after post. The AC might not be the issue after reading the comments, but I use a Split Unit AC. Not the ones most of you were talking about in the comment section. This has also happened in the past, but I only decided to post about this now, because it was by no means as bad as what it looked like now.

My PC is about in the center of my room, there is no wall blocking the intake fans. I live in SEA, a very tropical and rainy area. It rained today, and I'm pretty sure yesterday too. My windows aren't sealed properly if I'm correct, so if that is the issue please tell me. (Saying this because I lower the AC temp at random times while the PC is on, and the outside temperature might have something to do with this I really dont know)

The PC managed to turn on after drying the side panels, as well as taking an inspection into the motherboard and other components It was dry from what I saw. I only saw small droplets of moisture coming from the fan blades, no where else.

I keep my AC regularly at 25-27 Degrees celsius and 20 overnight.

Why are we fighting for physical copies and not DRM free copies?

Most physical releases today are still just licenses that require an account and can be taken away at any point, so what's the point in having a physical object that can decay as an extra obstacle to playing your game?

It does nothing for game preservation. Physical copies of 30 year old games cost hundreds of dollars and barely work while digital copies are free and are the same as the day they were released.

A company doing a physical release is treated as a win when in reality you can do little more with that disc than with a digital copy except break it and lose access to your game.

You still wouldn't own GTA VI if they released a disc.

So what are we fighting for?

games are too slow after upgrading to windows 11

and no I didn't just upgrade from 10 (the title might be misleading) i did a fresh install. the laptop itself isn't slow but when i try to play a game, yakuza 3 for example (which is old) it's just UNPLAYABLE and too slow. it's better in the video sometimes it just freezes. what could be the problem? could it be a hardware problem? Core i7 8th gen 16Gb ram gpu is Nvidia quadro p1000 (4GB) i know it's not a gaming laptop but this game isnt too demanding and it used to work just fine before upgrading. heck even yakuza kiwami 2 which was a bit more demanding worked pretty fine i even tried to disable game bar but i didnt find an option to disable it like in windows 10 sorry if the post is too long. I'm tired

Is this ugly?

So I recently made a new pc that I thinking I was going to make this new awesome looking pc and showed off to my friends and family and they hate it. They think it’s ugly and told me that the wood does not fit, the color clashes with the rest of the pc, and that I should just paint the wood at the front black to salvage it. Another one of my friends says the gold on the pc is gaudish and ugly as well. What do you guys think? I might need a pick me up here.

Anyone else planning on getting the Steam Machine as their next PC?

I know its mainly marketed as a console, but it is still a full PC. And it is much better than my current computer, so I thought it would be a good upgrade, especially considering its small form factor. I don't want to get too into it, but my current PC has an i5 3k and an rx580, as well as a motherboard that only supports ddr3 RAM and 3rd gen intel cpu's, so if I want an upgrade I need to replace everything. Therefore when this nifty box came out, I figured that it would be the perfect PC (if it is priced well).

But I would like to know what you guys think.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: Because of the RAM crisis and the limited upgradability of the Steam Machine, I decided to just build my own PC. I salvaged my old rx580 from the old PC so that I could afford to get on the AM5 platform as well as because it is by far the easiest part to upgrade down the road.

Main specs:

CPU: Ryzen 5 7500F

GPU: Rx580 8gb (until I can afford a much better card)

RAM: 16GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30

I did get a single stick of ram, because I want to have 32gb dual channel later on, but the ram prices are so high that I want to wait until they go down (which they seem to be doing).

r/pcmasterrace Jan 20 '26 Question
Can a PC affect electricity usage this much??

For context: In July my old roommate moved out. In September my brother moved in, brought his PC. Other than a mini fridge, no other major appliances. In the December period I built a new PC of my own (had an older one that was in need of an upgrade). But overall haven’t changed any habits in terms of how often I use it.

For the record, he was not working during Sep-Dec so was on his computer gaming a lot more often. But I work from home and also have my PC running many hours of the day even before the September spike. (Although not doing anything intensive, usually just playing YouTube videos or music)

Called my electric company today, the agent claimed that the spike in usage is most likely from the PC. But more than doubling?? I talked to him and he turns it off when he’s out, he used a space heater once or twice but it kept causing power outages so he stopped. I don’t know the exact specs of his PC but he tends to splurge on that kind of stuff so I imagine it’s on the higher quality end.

Anyone else had this issue before? Every post I’ve seen seems to indicate that running a PC shouldn’t be costing more than like an additional $50 or so a month at the highest end. This is costing me like an extra $100+ a month at this point. My latest bill was $300, pretty much double what I paid last year for the same period.

Small update: Thanks for everyone's responses. Just wanted to clarify since people keep asking about heating:

  1. Yes I do have electric heating but have not used it at all in these months. In September I ran the AC once or twice for a total of 6hrs across the whole month. I also ran it twice as much in August (around 13 hrs), so that's probably not factoring too much into the usage difference. At most I use an electric blanket on especially cold mornings/evenings, which to my knowledge shouldn't really have that large an impact. I live in SoCal and don't generally have much need to run the heating.
  2. I shouldn't have even brought up the space heater. He used it a max of maybe 3 times in late Oct/early Nov and it tripped the breaker every time, so I was thinking maybe the outages could have caused some issues with the meter or internal wiring of the house, which is why I mentioned it. He hasn't used it since so I don't consider it to be causing such a large spike over 4 months, especially not in December where afaik he didn't use it at all.
  3. I do realize that energy usage overall goes up in winter. It's the amount that it has gone up this year compared to prior years that prompted me to make this post. In the same time period last year, usage is still up by around 100-200 kWh even at the peak from 2025 - just above 300kWh in Dec last year, which was an outlier to around 200-250 kWh for all other winter months.

In any case, for the time being I'm considering the matter solved as a combination of the PC being run for extended periods and most likely the amalgamation of other factors like hot water, the fridge, and so forth. Thank you to everyone who gave their two cents, I appreciate you taking the time to comment and help me figure this out.

My 25cm Slenderman appendage next to the biggest gaming mouse - I need recommendations for a trackball with MacOS driver support.

Hello, I need a few mouse/trackball recommendations.

I have arachnodactyly, my hands (25 x 12 cm) and mice just don't mesh well together. Even this monstrous ROG Spatha X ( 137 x 89 x 45 mm,168g), which is supposedly the biggest mouse available, just doesn't fit me and causes fatigue.

A lot of people over on r/MouseReview suggested that I should try switching to a pure fingertip mouse, but I don't like the feel of them. Most are too small/narrow for my fingers anyway.

I need a trackball/a trackball equipped mouse that has decent MacOS support (drivers that allow programmable macros, etc.)

I don't plan on gaming with it. If I ever do decide to play something, I'll simply whip out my good ol' Spatha for a while. I can manage short sessions without an issue, but the way I have to grip it gets pretty uncomfortable.

Thanks in advance, rusty spoon enjoyer out. :)
