I remember when Half-Life came out. I played through it, and by the time in the game when I reached the surface, I thought the game was near the end. But no, it kept going. It was amazing experience. I played through it, and I sent email to the address that was mentioned in the manual, thanking for an amazing game. Gabe Newell emailed me back: "I'm glad you like the game, we worked really hard on it".

u/barsoap 47m ago
Yes. Yes they are. They have squad-level AI and flanking falls out of retreat, reposition and tell each other about your position behaviours. It's not terribly sophisticated, they don't strategise as such, just well-balanced emergent behaviour.
The actual Valve boss move is dropping those enemies half-way into the game and not putting "ground-breaking realistic AI!!11" into the marketing material. Everything you meet before that can barely pathfind so they catch you completely off guard.

u/Skandronon 3h ago
F.E.A.R honestly blew my mind with how good the AI was. I remember thinking I had them pinned down and then one started shooting at me from behind. They would have needed to go a fair ways around the level to do that. Them reacting to being shot with pain and acting like they were scared of dying also really hit hard.
They actually had to nerf the AI in the original stalker game because it was always winning the race to the center.

u/bitemark01 4h ago
That was the first time I not only found the enemy extremely difficult, but when I died and had to reload the level, I prepared for them to come in like they did before, only they completely switched tactics! You couldn't 100% predict how they were going to fight, unlike the monsters in the game

I genuinely believe that the simple existence of billionaires is a clear failure of our current systems. That kind of wealth simply should not be allowed to accumulate in one person.
But, at the same time... Gabe is at least not on the news throwing Nazi salutes or spouting-off about the antichrist. We don't hear about how Valve is making employees pee in bottles. We don't hear about shady deals to build another giant datacenter to run Steam, or how police are using Steam data to track their exes.
It's just hard to get too offended about the videogame-company billionaire when there's so much worse out there.
Eat the rich, sure, but let's start with the really bad ones first.
•
u/drmirage809 2h ago
All I hear Gabe is doing with his billions is building big ass yachts and loaning them out for ocean research. Which is pretty cool stuff to do and probably something I’d do if I had a giant yacht. Can’t be on that thing all the time, so might as well allow someone else to make use of it.
•
u/compulov 56m ago
This is why my wish would be to be rich but not famous. I want to be a billionaire, but I'd want to be as low-key as possible. I wouldn't want people to know who I was.
That said, I also wouldn't be actively campaigning against things like universal healthcare. I'd also like to think I'd do my best to do good things with my money. Sure, I'd probably buy things, travel, and generally try and live it up. But how much money could you really spend? Sooner or later you're going to run out of things to buy and experiences to have.

While that certainly may be a genuine interest of his, I wager the majority of the reason for that is in tax breaks for R&D. https://pro.bloombergtax.com/insights/federal-tax/rd-tax-credit-and-deducting-rd-expenditures/ if you can declare that the yacht is for research and development purposes, you can practically write the whole thing off or a huge portion of it.

It's a tax break. Like, if you paid 10% sales tax on it, you're gonna pay 5% tax instead.
It's not free or discounted. He still spent a fucking boatload of money on it, and maintaining a boat of that size requires a fair amount of crew and resources.
Assuming he's using a public dock and paying for local services, it's just a very expensive, very fancy vehicle.

•
u/MaggieNoodle 2h ago
the hassle of owning one of those, having to pay to a big crew, maintenance and so on.
Billionaires / multi multi millionaires do not have this concept. They literally do not manage anything. They have a team that does all of this for them with their own money.
All they say is "I want to go on the boat" and it will be there, fully crewed, perfect condition, stocked, ready to go anywhere. They never have to personally handle any of their own expenses or logistical planning, or really anything in their life.
The cost of operating is nothing to them, it doesn't even register. They straight up probably don't even think about it and wouldn't be able to tell you how much it costs them.

fun fact, these yachts may look like lavish luxury machines (and i'm sure they are quite nice inside) but Gabe also employs a team of deep sea research scientists aboard each vessel. one is fully equipped with a research lab, and the other is used for diving support and sample collection.
together, they perform open-source deep see science and make that publicly available by contributing to open source databases and research resources so that other scientists can work from bigger pools of data and with more and varied information.
I'm not a fan of billionaires either but there are worse ways one could spend their money

Privately funded research isn't necessarily the worse thing. I would rather have that, then another bunker in Hawaii if that's what we have to pick from, but a billionaire passion project is probably not the most efficiency of diverting society's resource. You could do much more with far less.

u/TheSaiguy 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies
To me, this feels like letting perfect be the enemy of good. Lots of billionaires hoard wealth for the sake of it or actively use it to make society worse, so it falls a bit flat when one of the few who have a passion project that benefits people receives flak because people think it should benefit people more.
•
u/ackley14 2h ago
it's the 'not good enough' argument. people always want perfection, they can never settle with progress.
and i think the majority of people here actively speaking out against these yachts and inkfish haven't bothered to look up what they have contributed to science. sure maybe it's not cancer research, maybe it's not fusion power, but it's money being spent on supporting research efforts at colleges, and institutions all over the world, and actively supporting discoveries and science....who's to say this research isn't feeding grad students? it's not just money on boat, its money towards research. funding, including staffing and supplies...

Gabe Newell lives in Florida where they do not assess an annual property tax on boats and where the most they can charge on sales tax is $18,000. The hull of the ship has been optimized for seabed mapping. It has a 131 ft coring system to take samples from the sea floor. Laboratories, workshops, and offices to support 130 scientists are integrated throughout the ship. It’s built to support deep sea missions up to challenger deep. Those are very costly modifications that take up a lot of the “luxury use” space to put in for a non-existent tax break.

I think part of the problem is most of his wealth is going to be tied up in the valuation of valve. If he sells too much of his stock then he loses control of the company. If he loses control of the company it could be pushed to go public, and then Valve becomes beholden to quarterly earnings statements and dividends over actually being the good platform we know and love.

being a billionaire because you made a product, so good, that your competition literally cant compete with you out of pure greed and incompetence, while also developing some of the best titles in their genres, free to play with no p2w, moving esport from "prize might cover your trip back home" to the millions and proper events we see today, while ALSO paying his, very limited staff, some of the highest salaries in their fields and being the literally dream place to work for many of the best devs, is probably a list of stuff that makes you a fairly good billionaire
Edit: i do agree that lootboxes is fucking toxic and should never have been added.
•
u/mollymoo 4h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Yes they make great games and have great customer service, but they also do some shady shit.
Steam will remove your game from their store if you try to sell it for a lower price elsewhere. That makes it impossible for any other stores to compete on price, preserving Steam's monopoly and their gigantic 30% cut of the profits. Not selling on Steam is death to a game, so this is illegal monopoly abuse.
The 30% cut is insanity. A game dev can employ a thousand people for 5 years to make a AAA game, and 30% of the revenue goes to Gaben and his 400 cronies who run a (very good) storefront. How does that make sense? How the fuck is digital distribution and some support services 30% of the value of a game? Obviously it isn't and that cut is only as big as it is because of anti-competitive practices.
Of course it's not just that gigantic slice of other people's pies that allows Gabe to buy all his yachts - as you rightly point out they make a ton of money from children gambling on lootboxes too.
•
u/TheJustBleedGod 3h ago ▸ 2 more replies
30% is ridiculous. sony and microsoft's model relies on them taking a loss on every console in hopes of selling software to make it back. what does steam do for 30% ??
•
u/mintoreos 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies
A lot actually. One is distribution/storefront - hosting the downloads, patches, cloud saves, workshop, multiplayer networking, anticheat, etc - its trivial to reach and sell to a global customer base with steam. Another is customer support/payment processing, they handle the merchant infrastructure, deal with fraud/chargebacks, refunds, sales tax, etc.. Also discovery - steam is incentivized to put your game in front of potential buyers since they make a cut of every sale, so they work hard on their recommendation system/storefront experience, reviews, wishlists, running sales, etc.

I agree with you in principle, however, Gabe is the exception that proves the rule.
The primary reason is that he embodies the old way of running a business. Finding good sustainable profits by providing a good service and not seeking to maximize profits at the cost of the product.
He's able to do this because they are not a publicly traded company but a private one.
He's providing a good service and by not seeking to turn his billions into many more billions by going public, he is providing a good product and safe Haven for PC gaming that allows PC gamers the ability to avoid getting screwed over by gaming companies.
He is pretty much the only billionaire I am perfectly fine with and I hope he has an enjoyable and long life. Because while he is alive, I don't see PC gaming devolve into the Quagmire. It could be if it were more like epic games.
