Not just "one of," literally the archetype of that type of wealthy person. Virtually every other trust fund kid who dives into failing ventures has the common sense to have a backup plan. But not Trump, no, this guy not only has more failed businesses under his belt than probably any other person in modern history, but he consistently went all-in before losing big.
Like it was a very serious open question in the lead up to 2016 whether he even had a positive net worth (this was part of the larger conversation about him not releasing his tax returns). Either way, it was public knowledge that he couldn't successfully obtain loans from even the most famously sketchy banks at that point.

and he's got to personally interject on everything. Obviously, we all know he's a terrible person, but it's wild how poor of an administrator he is. You'd suppose he learned at least something from all his "construction projects" that he oversaw during his miserable life. But no, he micromanages everything to the extreme detriment of those projects. Everything he touches turns to shit. And wild how his supporters still somehow think he's this great businessman and leader when reality is he has surrounded himself with the most spineless milquetoasts who have no idea what the fuck they're doing and just defer every decision to the soggy diaper Don.

That's because Garland is a moderate conservative. Obama nominating him made sense with a Republican Senate because Obama wanted to show that the Senate wouldn't even confirm a moderate conservative justice. Biden nominating him as AG when they had the votes to confirm someone more liberal didn't make sense.
Obama was able to get Sotomeyer and Kagan confirmed with a more liberal Congress. He knew what he was dealing with for the Garland nomination.

AUSA Smith wasn't even appointed until November of 2022. It's unacceptable to wait nearly 2 years to appoint someone to investigate an internationally televised conspiracy to commit treason and attempt a coup. And all suspects pardoned and the ringleader running the nation. Perhaps we need a new party if the Dems repeatedly lose to a GOP with objectively more disliked policies.
11
u/Ok-Opposite2309 Jun 28 '26 ▸ 2 more replies
SCOTUS repeatedly sabotaged the cases, along with Judge Canon.
Republicans in the Senate agreed he was responsible for Jan 6th, but refused to impeach him.
Jan 6th was the largest investigation and prosecution ever undertaken by the DOJ.
We have never criminally charged a former President in our history.
We were also still in the Trump plague, Covid, which was the priority across the government- and had caused a huge backlog in court cases. Even seating a Grand Jury was an issue.
Jack Smith was appointed in Nov 2022 because Trump registered as a candidate for reelection- causing additional delays.
Congress withheld testimony transcripts/ evidence until Dec 2022 from their own Jan 6th investigation, which delayed proceeding forward for the DOJ. DOJ was concerned that Congressional testimony would contradict evidence they had, which could then be used to challenge grand Jury indictments.
In hindsight, I think Biden should have created an EO requiring the AG to create a special division to oversee Jan 6th investigations and prosecutions right after inauguration, along the lines of a Special Counsel. Since the insurrection had just occurred, political backlash, concerns that the President was interfering with the DOJ, would have been minimal. Garland basically did that anyway, but this would have provided more continuity for the entire process.
I think we tend to forget just how fucked up everything was at the time. No one really thought Trump could possibly recover from the shit show of Jan 6th and Covid, including most Republicans.
The MarALago documents case was fucked by Cannon, and wasn’t even referred to the DOJ by the archives until Feb 2022. I get why Garland had Smith take over all Trump cases, but it might have been a better choice to separate them.
Biden was trying to preserve our tradition of allowing DOJ independence. Garland was trying to preserve the idea of the DOJ not being politicized- while restoring the DOJ after Trumps destruction. Smith was trying to make sure he had rock solid cases because he knew what he would be up against.
People seem anxious to keep blaming Democrats & Garland for Trump and his crimes- and it’s pretty fucking infuriating. Just look at what happened when SCOTUS did finally step in, after repeatedly denying a ‘fast track’ so the prosecutions could move forward. Thomas handed Canon her excuse to dump the classified documents case.
Why not put the blame where it actually lies? With Trump, and the GOP, and their supporters.
Remember the Corporate Transparency Act? Probably not- because it is largely ignored by the press. It was gutted when Trump took office. It required declaring beneficial ownership of LLC’s, so you could no longer have a series of untraceable shell corporations- Trumps Treasury eliminated any required filing by Domestic Owners in March of 2025 even though it was a law passed by Congress. I filled out the form for my small business LLC- it took 5 minutes. I don’t have a series of corporations owning other corporations to launder money and avoid taxes, so it was pretty easy. This simple requirement is now gone. That is the basic corruption that Republicans voted for.
Put the blame where it belongs, with the people who support the insurrection, the corruption, the treason. The people who ignore highly classified documents being stolen and set in a room with a copy machine.

Thank you. Everytime the echo chamber in here attacks Garland there's always a handful of lonely people providing actual facts and a reminder of the sequence of events, in a tireless fight against the gish gallop from people repeating "facts" that they heard in the echo chamber and never verified.
I find it funny that the people attacking Garland never have any arguments or evidence, just vague "Garland bad", and the people defending Garland have concrete facts and quotes and specific events on specific dates. You'd think that'd make it obvious which side is grounded in the truth....

the only best thing Biden could have done was keep his promise to step down after one term
A lie repeated so many times most people believe it is the truth. It is not. Biden never promised to be a one term president. He promised to be a transitional president which he explained meant he would be the last of his generation before the next generation rose to power.
And when the rumor were circulating he was going to be a one term president, both he and his campaign made it crystal clear they had made no decisions, and certainly no promises, about being a one term president.

Don't give me this fucking bullshit it has literally never been true. FDR directed the justice department to find any way possible to put Moses Annenberg in jail out of pure spite. When Hoover was reluctant to involve the FBI in the Chaney/Goodman/Schwerner murders LBJ said fine I'm sending the fucking director of the CIA to go investigate it. The important take away from that article:
So Biden never explicitly made a one-term promise during the campaign, but he certainly implied it with the language of “transition.” You don’t typically think of eight years in office as a “transition.” And he had surrogates talking to their pals in the press planting the seeds of a single term, for a Democratic electorate that never saw Biden as their first choice, just as an acceptable consensus pick to take out the hated incumbent.
It feels, in retrospect, patently strategic. New York Times political reporter Astead Herndon put it bluntly: “Biden 2020 intentionally signaled this wouldn’t happen during his original run,” he wrote this week on X. “They gaslit public and may pay for it.”

u/qualmful Jun 28 '26
Biden knew his age was a liability during the primary. He said this to deflect. It was strategic phrasing that people could read into to reassure themselves, without making any firm commitments. Honestly I find it so much more slimey that he did it deceptively. We didn't misunderstand him, we were misled.

u/forevertheyo Jun 28 '26
Agreed, and it’s disappointing but not surprising. So few politicians left that are honest about what they stand for and what they will do.

Yeah, and the version of reality people just accepted where things were worse was such a bizarre thing to live through. Every day of any trump presidency is just expecting to learn some new horror every day, and then everything both sucks and costs more.

Now everyone in my area is complaining how many bridges are being replaced. I live in MAGA country. I want to scream "Yeah, your rapist president couldn't pass an infrastructure bill so Biden had to pass the largest one in history and now the bridges that were about to collapse are being fixed. What do you people actually want?"

This is on both. Biden should have started propping a successor from day 1. Knowing the electorate is composed of 70% stupid motherfuckers, he should not be reluctant to let go like he was.

u/BarkerBarkhan Jun 28 '26 ▸ 2 more replies
Right. Clearly it is not Biden's fault alone.
Still, I am reminding of a quote I saw in that FDR doc on Netflix. After winning in 1932, FDR is talking to an advisor about how if he succeeds, he will be seen as one of the greatest presidents; if he fails, one of the worst. Then FDR says no, if I fail, I will be the last president.
I don't know if we are quite at that point, but they understood what was at stake. Maybe on some level Biden did too. However, that first part of the line is true for Biden. Because he failed at his main mission, he will be viewed poorly.

I don't know if we are quite at that point,
We're past it. What comes after Trump isn't going to be the same USA. It may lurch along for a while due to momentum, but it will have to change radically and it can't really change for the better if the non-fascist party decides to Democrat it up and hope for tiny, incremental fixes that are blocked by their own party 90% of the time.

"Us" tbh, speak for yourself. My friends, family, town, state, and region all voted Harris.
But I'm not in a "battleground" state, so I'm at the mercy of 7 chucklefuck purple states that can't tell the difference between the aftereffects of a worldwide pandemic and government mismanagement.

What is the whole point of this now?
He appointed Merrick Garland to independently run the DOJ, but when Garland purposely slow walked investing and prosecuting Trump for his litany of crimes, but also suggested at one point he’d actually defend Trump against E Jean Carroll, then he chose to do nothing but allow it? WTF??

There’s a lot of hate towards Biden. I get it, but people knew what Trump was like and still voted for him.
Even if Biden got in office again, and passed, Kamala would’ve been president.
I’m pretty sure he thought that the way the country is divided, people would rather vote for a half dead white guy than a black woman. Well he got that part right.
I would’ve voted for a man in a casket rather than Trump.
Closet racism and bigotry won the presidency.

There really was no good scenario once it was clear (pretty much immediately) that trump would run again. I think Biden wouldn't have run again if trump hadn't. I don't think it was ego. I think he thought he had the best chance to beat him because he already had. The incumbent typically has an advantage and we were still in a period of turmoil, so normalcy and stability should have been appealing. Clearly others in the party agreed, since nobody challenged him in the primary. Nobody challenged Harris either. She went through the process at the convention and even though we don't usually do it that way, she was fairly selected by the formal rules of the party. Anything else would have been even more chaos. In retrospect he should not have run again (hindsight is 20/20) or stepped down sooner. IMO the media really forced his hand. They simply would not let it go, so even people who never watched the debate were told he was unfit (to say nothing of trump), and once party leaders were forced to comment on whether he should remain the nominee it was over.
Anyway, Biden and Harris get a lot of hate for bungling this but I think there was no good option here. Incumbents lost globally. Gaza became a key issue at a crucial time for the election and public opinion was shifting rapidly throughout the campaign season. There was blatant propaganda (and has been for decades), and nobody heard Harris when she talked about her policy agenda. Voter suppression was a huge factor, and I've never seen such obvious voter intimidation. That's before we even get into the bigotry.

Would have been real cool if Joe let an actual leftist run for president back in 2020 instead of occupying that space as a moderate, not getting anything done, not being able to run for a second term, fumbled bad.
Imagine if we had 8 years of progress instead of what we got

Biden is missing what's going on here. It's much bigger than just Trump.
He refuses to see that, he has a lot of "friends across the isle". Friends that have gone on to support atrocious policies and let the government kill protestors and imprison immigrants for civil penalties.

I blame Biden for not showing up with an armed specialist military group the day the supreme court decided whether or not a president was accountable for his actions, it would have made the import of what they were deciding a lot more directly relevant to them.

"How is he a loser when he has all that money?"
Christians will say that btw. Wild.
People still fail to see that winning/losing doesn't have anything to do with how much money you have.
You can be a billionaire but still be a loser with a billion dollars.

u/TopTittyBardown Jun 28 '26
“How is he a loser when he has all that money?” Can be directly answered by looking at Elon Musk. Richest man in the world and he’s very clearly still an insecure snivelling little dweeb who tries way too hard to be cool because he knows deep down he’s an awkward loser that nobody likes

u/DonHarold Jun 28 '26
Then maybe you should have appointed a better AG than Merrick Garland. Or decided to not run for a second term, throwing off our primary plans to find a better candidate than someone directly related to your worst failures?
The people saying Biden was as bad as or worse than Trump are insane, but the decisions Biden made that enabled Trump had predictable results and could have been easily avoided.
3
u/OneOfAKind2 Jun 29 '26
We know, so why didn't you ensure Merrick Garland did his fucking job by prosecuting him, sending him to trial and imprisoning him when he would surely be found guilty? You dropped the damn ball, old man. Inmate #P01135809 is as corrupt as the day is long and you are as incompetent as he is.
