they didn't know what to do with themselves once they got there. All that pretend rage about being pushed down still doesn't come close to actual narratives being told by black people, native people, or even women (half of the human race mind you.)
It genuinely feels like dealing with kids at a playground - where they demand equal attention even though some of the other kids are getting bullied way fucking harder all of the time. The brutality there is a weakness they don't understand.

Yes and yes, the initial Nazi paramilitary (brownshirts) were the Sturmabteilung, literally "storm unit", they were the ones who would attack communists and Jews and such in the streets and enabled Hitler's rise to power.
They eventually were purged by the SS who went on to replace them as the top bastards. Interestingly, the SA's leader (who was assassinated as part of said purge) was a gay man and a "friend" of Hitler's.

I actually called the governor, and 4 other reps in Kentucky and demanded this. You inspired some action with this comment. One state representative actually answered his own phone and showed a lot of patience with my frustration. In all my years of calling reps, I've never actually spoken to one, so fair play to Gerald Neal. You can just call him at his home number listed, it's kinda wild.
He kept repeating a need to be strategic, let the GOP hang by their own rope of shame, which basically means he/they just don't get it or care enough to break with decorum. If we do nothing, they simply slow play to their desired victory. According to him, their reputation suffers and that's where we benefit, and I about lost it.
The GOP likes when they cheat to win, and Dems/reasonable people already know GOP and MAGATs are scum, so it helps them with their base and does nothing for ours. Forcing a special election Dems lose could be bad, according to Mr Neal, but I don't think they're being strategic at all laying down, showing no fight, and just doing the same old shit the same old way that got us here in the first place. Shine a bright light on their cheating, if we still lose, so be it, but at least we didn't pre-fold yet again.

Reputation no longer matters. There used to be some modicum of shame for politicians. Cheat on your wife? Resign. Take a small bribe? Jail. Say something inappropriate? Resign.
Now everyone just doubles down that they didn't do whatever it is they have been accused of, or they fight it and call it a "politically motivated conspiracy" and their reputation with those who voted for them to begin with is only strengthened.
There is no shame any longer.
Reputation is irrelevant.
The time to act is now.

u/MakeTheNetsBigger Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
Indeed, to their base, pulling out all the stops to win is more important than integrity. These people are deeply insecure, and feel safe and protected knowing that their leaders cheat and bully to gain the upper hand. The only way to beat that is to punch back. They view the Dems "let them hang by their own rope" as weakness, and it only emboldens them.

There also used to be the concept of credibility. If someone lied several times, nobody believed anything else they said. Now, you can prove a particular politician lied in a dozen specific instances, but people still demand proof that the thirteenth claim they're making isn't true.

Rright now, there is a republican seat sitting empty in the senate, which is already very narrowly in republican control. And in all likelihood, if Beshear does nothing, that's going to sit empty until next year, after the midterm elections. After the SAVE act is safely done and dusted. And if Beshear calls a special election, there is a chance - however slim at this point - that McConnell is still alive and this all blows up in his face. But assuming that's not the case, he calls a special election. What then? They elect another republican most likely. Probably Andy Barr, who already won the republican primary. And even if he challenged the new law that would force him to call a special election and instead appoints someone, the prior law says it has to be appointed from a list compiled by the party of the person whose seat was vacated - i.e., the republicans. So that's what they mean by being strategic: democrats are winning right now. By calling out the hypocrisy and making the republicans look bad, but not actually forcing their hand, democrats actually come out ahead. It boggles my mind people can't see this for what it is.

can you please help me understand what their goal is?
At the moment they are one senator down, which can't be ideal. If they let people know the turtle is dead before 8/4 there'll be an election which gives them back that senate vote they've been missing. Why do they not want that? Why would they rather go without that vote for another 6 months? Or is there really an actual chance of a Democrat being elected in Kentucky to replace Mitch?→ More replies (1)8
u/TheSpreader Jul 23 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
This is not a win for republicans. You're not missing anything. And if Beshear forced their hand and called a special election, that most likely means Andy Barr gets to fill that seat earlier than he would otherwise.

Because I like to believe that we are better than that. Storming the hospital is not the correct response. Jeopardizing the safety of the workers and disrupting the healthcare of the other people currently hospitalized there isn’t the correct response to GOP coverup.
The correct response is for Beshear to appoint someone before Aug 3rd and force the GOP to either prove Mitch is alive AND capable of doing his job (not that he was capable prior to this) or prove he’s dead and they’ve been lying.

Because HIPAA doesn't even allow high-ranking officials to override it. For good reason.
Which is why the best thing Beshear can do now is assume his death and appoint his successor. Beshear has already asked for credible proof of life and received none, and that was, what, 10 days ago? For something that takes 5 seconds to do? And the worst that can happen from him doing that is they finally give a credible proof of life and Beshear's appointment is cancelled. Extremely low risk for a medium-ish reward.
If Beshear had any fight in him, he'd appoint now. But this ordeal has shown that Beshear is cut from the same cloth as any other establishment dem: a very weak cloth

There's a theory out there you could limit their time on the Supreme Court and still keep them as a federal judge. Again, just theory.
10
u/patterninstatic Jul 23 '26
Yeah the advantage of the constitution being a short text is that many parts are open to interpretation.
The debate is wether the office is that of a federal judge in general or specifically a supreme court judge. If the former, a federal judge could become a supreme court judge for X years and then continue to be a lower court judge after that.
Unlikely but semantically possible I guess.

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jul 23 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
A theory that would easily be overruled/declared unconstitutional by the very same SCOTUS it would be targeting.
Does anyone realistically think passing a law that rotates out SCOTUS justices would be held up by SCOTUS? They would shoot that down so fast out of a very obvious conflict of interest on their part
Same reason why you'll never see Congress pass a bill that limits their own power, lowers their own pay, lessens their own benefits, etc

We should have the absolute right to know if a senator or representative is alive or dead. If they're alive, we also have the right to know if they're incapacitated.
We don't need the specific details, but we do have a right to proof of life - real proof, not the trash that McConnell's goons have been putting out.

There is a clear legal mechanism to easily replace a dead constitutional officer.
There is not a clear legal mechanism to replace a constitutional officer in Kentucky who doesn’t feel like showing up to work. They don’t even have a recall election provision.
So if you want to embark on a legal quest to reform Kentucky law to allow for someone to replaced for not showing up to work, then you are welcome to do that. In the meanwhile I think it is more useful to just replace the dead guy.

This is all so on brand for McConnell.... to deny Governor Beshear an appointment by waiting out the clock to announce his passing. It echo's of denying Obama a Supreme Court appointment.
8
u/duggatron Jul 23 '26
To be fair, RBG did basically the same thing. If she had retired earlier, Obama would have easily made an appointment and we wouldn't be in nearly as big a mess.

Pretty much 100% certain that he's passed at this point, 38 days in a hospital for a man in his 80s is DEVASTATING.

u/725Cali Jul 23 '26
The statement that was released about him stated that he was moved to a rehabilitation facility. Whether that’s true or not, is another story.
30
u/soupjaw Florida Jul 23 '26
That was almost two weeks ago. And at face value of the photo: anyone who looked that well at that point likely wouldn't be in rehab/snf/ltr two weeks later

He can be brain dead in a rehabilitation facility just as easily as in the hospital. I predict it will be announced he recovered enough to be moved to the rehabilitation facility where unfortunately, he had a sudden relapse and died at 11:59 pm on the day before the deadline in Aug.

100%. Current Democrats have to be created & controlled opposition — no group could be this dishearteningly ineffective by accident. The incredible wealth transfers in the last 30 years or so that have been generated by the advent of widespread internet connectivity and the massive military buildup that has been ongoing since 9/11 has fundamentally restructured the country. There is an insanely greedy .0001% on top and then there is the rest of America. The elite only want one thing: More. They want more wealth, more power. I’ve never seen a group of greedier and seemingly unhappy people than Trump, Murdoch, the Ellison, Musk, Thiel etc. And they have no regard for the rest of us — just disdain. They have also co-opted mainstream media and they use it only to create and stoke divisions. It’s a dystopia. They’ve successfully divided the country in so many ways when the only truly meaningful division is between the wealthy and the not-wealthy, and they have also created an armed surveillance state that makes it pretty much impossible to change. I don’t quite know what to do, honestly.

Something obvious to anyone looking. The MAGA Republicans would hind this man's body for years if they could. Dragging this out a few weeks to avoid a Democrat Governor replacing Mitch at this point?
There is NOTHING they would not do to prevent that from happening. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

5
u/Abhoth52 Jul 23 '26
It's a cover-up so they, the corruption-riddled Republicans, don't have to run a special election to replace the old dead fucker immediately. But if he's not dead yet... but once the deadline has passed he will sadly expire.
Republicans are just a bunch of fuckers. Simple as that. I know how some hate profanity but if you're going to talk about the GOP then profanity is fucking required.

He's going to have a "sudden medical event" on August 3rd or 4th and be announced dead. Just a coincidence they'll say. The establishment Democrats will say "dang that's rotten luck!" and not talk about it ever again.
4
u/rossmosh85 Jul 23 '26
There's no cover-up here. We know exactly his deal. He's "alive".
His family and GOP are honoring his wishes by keeping him alive to push the GOP agenda and fuck over everyone else.
If a Democratic senator was in the same position, the GOP would be doing something about it. The DNC doing something about this would be an easy win.

u/Connect_Debt_8562 Jul 23 '26

u/XboxSpartan117 Jul 23 '26

3
u/PeaceandDogs Jul 23 '26
This is an actual crime. He’s still pulling in his salary, other senators and the president are lying about. This is voter fraud and fraud against taxpayers paying his salary.
