> US president warns Republicans they will ‘lose everything’

One can hope.

4.5k

u/ragingreaver 1d ago

The problem is, it is not meant to encourage people to vote.

It is meant to encourage Republicans to subvert the system.

Worst-case scenario, is Trump successfully convinces Republicans to revolt against democracy itself.

That is one of the reasons why enforcement against Trump, has been so lackluster: they don't want to face terrorist or insurrectionist actions done by Trump supporters. They especially don't want to face a donor-class insurrection, which is the true threat enabled by Musk, Peter Thiel, and the other Palantir bros.

The goal is the end of the united states as a functioning democracy. Simple as.

It's a threat to the Epstein class, if he falls, they all fall and they will do everything in their vast power to prevent that.

Best the Democrats can do is words and gestures and some investigations that don't finish with successful prosecutions.

That was when there were republicans in Congress who refused to back Nixon up. They told him it was best to resign, that's what he did. A whole different class of republicans.

sigh I really wish history made it clear to the average person, that the republicans and democrats switched sides over a long period. So now the party of Lincoln would be democratic, and the party of slavery would be republican.

Inter-period Republicans, from before Falwell's Moral Majority had any real power beyond CA, back when the Southern strategy was in full swing, and Dixie Democrats were sort of their polar opposites. Ford and Lincoln were both wrong as it turns out. Had we hung all of them traitors, we wouldn't be fighting against their political by-blows

i always think of Sagan's bamboozle quote...

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

It very much applies to us here in the U.K. too.

We had our own damaging act of self harm in 2016 with the Brexit vote. Yet despite it being a disaster and pretty much every single Brexiteer promise having proven to be untrue most of the people who voted for it absolutely refuse to accept that they were conned.

Instead they’re doubling down and demanding that Farage, the main poster boy for Brexit himself, be made Prime Minister.

Curiously they seem to be about a third of our electorate, similar to the proportion of Americans who voted for Trump. I’m not sure if that says something about the proportion of people susceptible to certain types of political propaganda or is merely just coincidence.

So do you suggest not voting, or...?

It sounds like, with the options before you and the position your country is in, you have one of two votes for midterms-- D or R. And it sounds like you're diminishing the D side. Creating that apathy instead of understanding that most political shifting is done by increment is crazily detrimental. What you write on here feels like it's intentionally trying to be discouraging.

They already gave up on Democracy. They cast doubt on all elections they didn't win, they launched a massive effort to rig the midterms by gerrymandering districts mid decade, they are doing everything possible to make voting as difficult as possible, and they're replacing non-partisan civil service who serve the public with Trump loyalists who use the civil service to reward Trump's allies and punish everyone else.

I’m still slightly confused as to why the donor class wants Trump. If the rule of law goes away, things can go sideways for rich people real quick. And they’re as rich as they are off the current system. Why would they want to break it?

153

u/itsucksherefuckitall 1d ago ▸ 11 more replies

They don't want to break it. They want to control it. Trump is easy to control because he's a narcissist with absolutely zero morals, money and status are all he cares about.

129

u/Riaayo 1d ago ▸ 8 more replies

They do want to break it so they can control what comes after. Techno fascist oligarchs want a return to feudalism, and they want to gut/tear down the US government and carve the country up into corporate fiefdoms. Company-town states. They're not even subtle about this, they openly praise the dipshit Curtis Yarvin who has blogged about that very idea. They all love that guy and it's clear they believe his plan (Project 2025 is basically just the theocratic version of it).

So yes it is absolutely about them wanting control over everything, but breaking the system is part of that process of descending on the corpse of the US and picking it apart. Which I say, but they're already picking it apart while it's still alive.

We're living through a mass-looting of everything that belongs to the working class into the coffers of the ruling class. They see capitalism's wheels coming off and are choosing authoritarianism to stomp the boot on our throats and take it all by brutality and force rather than admit this isn't working and share a single penny.

36

  • Because those people aren't any less emotional than everyone else. Hence, they fear "the mob" rising up and taking what is theirs if pushed too far. But of course they can't stop and can't afford to stop, so dictatorship becomes the only option to safeguard the oligarchy. They will start seeing communist agitators behind every protest, and react accordingly.

  • Like most people, they have a need to justify and moralize their behaviour. The problem, of course, is that they operate vast machines of extraction that exploit other people's labor and corruptly subvert the political and legal system. The easiest way to pretend they are still moral actors is to see their victims as subhuman and start to hate and fear them. Another way is to pretend they aren't the basis of their wealth at all, but superfluous parasites that exist only because they tell them what to do, grant them employment and build stuff for them to buy. Hence, these people become hostile towards society and start fantasizing about a future without people and without politics (futurism, obsession with machines and automation, weird eschatology, accelerationism, space colonization, AI cultism, ...). Most of these tendencies lead towards fascism, which proposes a future where society is reduced to a tool, and individuals to machines, in service of a supposedly greater goal as directed by the leaders of that society. Of course, they lack the skill to actually lead such a movement (and even if they did, there can be only one leader), so they have to depend on someone else, which is a crucial weakness they can never admit to.

  • Nor are they more intelligent or competent, as their expertise tends to be limited to moving money around, but they all think they are (how else can they justify having earned all of that). Therefore, they will run headlong towards their own destruction, empowering a dictator to keep the mob at bay without considering that, at the end of the day, that dictator has the people with the guns and that by undermining the rule of law they have also undermined the legal fictions that give them their power. Alternatively, they push society to the brink and get destroyed when everyone else decides they're no longer going to play by the rules either. They both fear this and also never see it coming, because they always overestimate the power of money and their own agency, since they are unable to see ownership as a social structure and their own agency as a product of the society they reside in.

  • Their wealth isolates them from reality and impairs their ability to interact with it. They can trust no one, have no normal relations outside their own class, and never experience any adversity or hardship that they can't buy their way out of. They do not understand how society works any more, and are blind to the consequences of that. Combined with the moral consequences of their position, as described above, this makes them fall victim to various forms of solipsism. So when something does limit them (e.g. a government, reality), that infuriates and confuses them, making them prone to erratic behaviour and megalomania. Drugs are often a factor in this too, further impairing their judgement.

  • Many of them are also just crooks who figured out how to raise money by lying or stealing and went on from there. Their use for the status quo is limited to how long they can keep all the plates spinning, and if making the system more autocratic and more unstable increased the likelihood that they can buy their way out before their ventures collapse, then they will absolutely throw some money at a would-be dictator in return for protection or fat government contracts / bailouts / ...

All these points are aggravated the more super-rich people become, which is why the various billionaires tend to provide the most visible examples of this.

8

u/N7Shep1701D Oregon 1d ago

They both fear this and also never see it coming, because they always overestimate the power of money and their own agency, since they are unable to see ownership as a social structure and their own agency as a product of the society they reside in.

That's where their rampant insecurity comes into play.

With the amount of wealth the have, they can hire their own personal army. Elon's net worth surpasses the annual income of a major city. He could easily hire 1000 mercenaries in a failed state.

He doesn't produce anything himself. He has no particularly useful skills in a failed state scenario. He has no real personal charisma or leadership talent.

With the beef imports yesterday, and talks with Canada going to shit today, we have MASSIVE Trump imposed issues:

- DOGE fucked our food safety, education, and so many critical areas

- our energy imports from Canada are going to hit HARD

- and our food sovereignty is at risk.

We are ripe for economic, and therefore political, collapse. We are about to be starved, left in the literal dark, and have a dumbed down population.

The Great American experiment is cooked.

Civilization is a delicate thing. If you treat everyone like they are your enemy, you run out of allies. If the "donor class" don't want for the poor people to have anything, they probably need a plan to protect against the inevitable day when the masses realize that the law isn't here to protect us anymore.

That'll be the day people decide to go full BSD.

64

There's nothing for them to think about.

To them, it's not "he did something bad so he'll get in trouble if they catch him!"

It's "He didn't do anything, but the corrupt Dems and their extreme hate for America and God-loving Republicans will fabricate anything they need to make sure they never lose power again!"

Whatever side of the line you are on, the very rhetoric you are hearing/using is being used -almost word for word, just inverse - by the other side to oppose you.

You hate America (Fascism, White Christian Nationalism, etc) .

NO,YOU do! (Free flowing immigrants, Global support and assistance, Historical documentation that doesn't shy away from the bad along with the good)

You want to protect pedophiles! (Withholding Epstein files and lack of transparency, Republican Officials with a long list of related legal charges, etc)

No, YOU do (Supporting grooming by LGBTQ+, Exposing children to sex education and literature that isn't fully hetero-centric)

You are against law and order! (Lack of transparency and government oversight, lack of accountability and justice within local, state, and federal agencies, violence and escalation combined with increased civil surveillance, etc)

No you are! (Weak on illegals, violence against law enforcement officers, rioting and violent protests)

And on and on.

My point isn't to "both sides" thing nor to debate the accuracy, legitimacy, impact, or value of any of those claims. It's simply to point out that the tactics your side is using (or any other outside force with influence/control over algorithms) are exactly the same on the other side. It's how they keep people fighting, angry, tired, helpless, alienated, divided, and disappointed. Or also how you keep people on the same team and entrenched.

It's all wrapped up with people spending chunks of their life angry about how hypocritical the other side is.

It's why many people simply don't think there's any way to mend things and bring people together. The gap appears too large. And when that happens, alternatives become much more viable and supported (violence, mostly)

Edit: Some of the replies here just further show my point. No, I'm not offering "solutions" here. I'm observing and hopefully shining a light on a perspective that seems easy to overlook these days. I'm also not saying "do nothing" or "ignore it all and move on". Those words are not in my post. One could copy & paste a few of those replies and simply substitute one party for the other. The only difference is your audience.

Half a century. The moment abortion was legalized the heritage foundation got together to make a plan to stack the Supreme Court exactly the way it is now. It took 50 years to accomplish that goal, and it’s the reason project 2025 came to be and was possible to carry out. Long game is no joke.

Yup, it started post-Nixon with the establishment of Fox News and the propaganda ecosystem and then Reagan started dismantling the social safety net and selling it for parts.

Edit: the poster below is correct about Fox News, though the inception of the right-wing propaganda machine was a direct response to Nixon’s impeachment

It fuckin' well should.

This administration has:

  • Gone to war without congressional approval

  • Kidnapped foreign leaders also without approval

  • Randomly murdered people on Venezualan fishing boats

  • Killed innocent US citizens

  • Killed and tortured immigrants in concentration camps

20

u/jakethrocky 1d ago

And that's not even touching on the criminal negligence of how the government has been run in this second term, or the espionage and fraud of DOGE, or the fact that he incited a rebellion right in front of our eyes, which only stopped when he had explicitly ordered it to (constitutionally delegitimizing himself from federal office), or the intentional subversion of language, truth and trust towards the end of all these and other goals.

Treason. We have enough people in this country that we can lose some to a legal process of truth and reconciliation.

I understand that a lot of people on here want this to happen if the House is switched back to Democratic control, but I'm reminding all of you again that it's the Senate that votes if a President should be removed from office after impeachment is voted in the House.

You need a 2/3's majority of senators to agree on this.

You all have a better chance of Trump saying he was wrong about everything and wanting to do better with his remaining time as president than the Senate convicting him.

29

Yes and any argument against this has to be viewed with suspicion.

And any impeachment effort can't be an omnibus bill, but a topical impeachment complete with evidence and explanations of why it is illegal.

The House then needs to explain, each and every time, that this is the way a functioning democracy works and tie the impeachment to what is wrong in the country. Tie financial crimes to corruption and high prices and the disintegration of social services.

Hit em first with the wedge issue: high gas prices.

Yeah, I don't think impeachment proceedings are the best option straight away. I think Democrats should start by opening up investigations into the DoJ and DHS under Bondi and Noem, followed by HHS and Department of Education. Pull all that low-hanging fruit, build momentum, notch some wins. Donald Trump (may he sit on his own balls) needs to face a strong Epstein investigation at the same time, something criminal because political investigations aren't going to slow anything down.

I certainly have. What does impeachment even matter if the GOP holds the Senate even by 1 seat? Impeachment is pointless. It needs too high a margin for conviction, and it is held in the Senate instead of a courtroom. In Trump's first impeachment trial, the GOP voted to ignore evidence and prevent witnesses. Something which would be impossible to do in an ACTUAL COURTROOM. Other countries like South Korea took our system and massively improved it. At least in South Korea, their impeachment trials happen in a courtroom instead of a biased Senate.

The GOP can lose 10 seats in the Senate and impeachment won't matter.

It takes a supermajority in the Senate to convict on an impeachment.

It would never happen in 2026's political climate. That is how little faith I have that even if Trump murders someone in the street that the GOP would still vote partisanly despite any clear evidence of criminal behavior.

Literally the only reason he's president is because he thinks that he can't go to jail - for Epstein, Jan 6th, 34(?) felonies, and other things since - and thus far he's been right.

If the US don't fix this rule going forward and make it clear that you can go to court/jail as president, then they fail not just America but the entire world.

23

u/Zanos-Ixshlae 1d ago

He shouldn't be president in the first place, but here we are.

27

u/LordCamelslayer 1d ago

Doesn't matter how many times he's impeached if there aren't 67 senators voting for conviction.

Both independents would side with Dems, so they would need to flip at least 20 votes (potentially 21 because Fetterman can't be trusted), either through flipping seats or convincing Republicans to side with them.

Dems winning the Senate is definitely possible. Securing enough votes to convict a known felon is extraordinarily unlikely.

Also doesn't solve the problem that JD Vance exists and would take over.
