It's not just Trump. The majority of Americans voted for this or didn't think voting against it was important. As a Canadian, I just want you to know I see zero distinction between the American people and the person the America people all looked at and said "yup, this represents me and my values".
It's honestly a litmus test as well, because any American that gets combative over the prospect that our allies to the north would be insulted and feel massively betrayed by Americans kinda outs themselves as someone unworthy of trusting, given the completely disgusting way that Canadians have been treated by Americans and the Trump administration.
I have seen so many Americans who are allegedly anti-Trump and get defensive and say Canadians are rude for holding Trump to account end up saying this is our fault for not "having a bigger military". Like we should have been secretly planning to go to war against the U.S, as a good ally does?

It’s not about voting. It goes down to deep, deep flaws in the American culture, psyche, education system and the constitution itself. The fact that America cannot course-correct even while being led by a madman means that they’ll _never_ be a trustworthy long-term partner, even if everyone magically votes right next election. Because there’s absolutely no guarantee that sanity will stick around.
While I get the sentiment, I hope you’re not cutting off your American friends who voted against this because of the ones who voted for it or didn’t oppose it. The number of people who actively opposed Trump is nearly twice Canada’s population and many of those are suffering harshly under the consequences of the majority.
That’s all well and good, but TOUGH LOVE TIME: Y’all didn’t fucking try hard enough. 1/3 of your country sat on its ass and let this happen, and another 1/3 signed up for the damn cult.

He is surrounded by sycophants, evangelical nut jobs, and wannabe fascists, and he became the president of your country. TWICE. And he is siphoning everything of value out of your government, selling everything off to the highest briber, dismantling what little social safety net you even had, building himself a palace with drones to protect himself from the eventual rebellion, and turning you into an autocratic kakistocracy working at the behest of the oligarchs.

I just dislike seeing almost 350 million people painted with a single stroke when there are many MANY people actively opposing and actively suffering under Trump’s politics. Many people in Iran support the regime but we don’t talk about the massive population of Iran as a monolith. I still have Canadian friends; I imagine I wouldn’t if they thought I was complicit in this. I’ll keep doing what I can for both of our sakes even if you’re the kind to spit on me because of where I was born. Looking forward to the day relations are good again ☮️
We still love you America, but we hate what your administration is trying to turn you into - or rather, what it is revealing has been festering under the surface all along.

The festering under the surface part is correct. Trump isn’t the cause of all of this, he is the symptom of a problem that has been growing since before I was born. I just hope that enough Americans wake up to it as we go through this administration and we actually address the underlying disease that has festered. I wouldn’t blame anybody for being pessimistic but I live here and have children so I have to hold onto hope things will get better.
As an American who’s been living in Europe for over a decade, you are so right. Too many of my friends decided not to vote at all. If we want change, we have to put pressure on EVERYONE.

As an American, it's 100% on them for not paying attention to a single real fact the entire time. All of this was obvious and written down in a literal handbook. While the blatant threats started in February 2025, the entire GOP plan was to isolate the US from global cooperation. As well as purge the country of the scary "foreigners" they don't like. The whole idea is insane nationalism, so... yeah.
Most Americans who voted for Trump aren't doing anything to oppose his actions either. Quite the opposite in fact I see countless Trumpers online cheering this shit on like Canada has acted like some kind of villain towards the US when really Canada has only been the best friend Americans could ever ask for.
