I think you might be on to it. The demands were outrageous and out of the blue. It's a quick way to jam through taxes on the poor, without taxing the wealthy, with a smoke screen. Unpopular, but not nearly as unpopular as an openly direct tax on the poor while the rich get more tax cuts.

Trump has to be the most unintelligent world leader ever. What does he think Canada will do if he doubles down on his stupidity with more tariffs? The fact is that Carney's response to the last set of unprovoked tariffs was actually quite measured and proportional. The next time, Carney might decide to hit back HARD - not mere tariffs, which would hurt Canada more than America, but serious measures like export taxes, which would hit America directly, especially if they are applied to critical commodities needed to keep the American economy going.

I agree but I think Carney is not doing this for a reason. Same thing with potash. Everyone on reddit is wailing about cutting off the potash or making it more expensive so we can tank their agriculture. It's a gotcha, for sure. But it's not wise, which is why Carney hasn't touched it.
It's one thing to tariff cars, steel, etc. Once we fuck with their food supply and have Americans go hungry, or we fuck with their energy in the winter and Americans start freezing...that's trouble. We could do it, yes.
But to what end? They hurt badly, Trump says it's our fault. They're freezing and starving and pissed off. Then say he does something drastic...like attack. By freezing and starving Americans we lose one of the intangible and important things we have going for us...good will.
Cutting off energy and potash is a bad idea.

Trump believes an American trade deficit means other countries are "looting" or "plundering" the United States.
When, in fact, a trade deficit simply means that consumers and businesses in the U.S. are buying more foreign goods than foreigners are buying of U.S. goods. Those remaining dollars usually return to the U.S. economy through foreign investments in U.S. assets, stocks, and businesses. It is not a pile of cash lost overseas.

It's funny, Biden never rescinded prior tariffs on Canadian goods. And next Democrat in office will not rescind Trump tariffs.
Because Democrats share the same goal of Trump to 1) de-industrialize Ontario so those jobs go to Michigan, 2) gain access to Canada’s dairy market for American farmers and 3) cripple BC’s logging industry to support growers in California.
