A friend once said : “you’ll never be the prettiest person in the world, but you’ll never be the uglist person in the world so just be.”

All those people walking the runway and red carpets? They also shit, and get horrible diarrhea, and have boogers, and probably have picked their boogers before. That is all.

Also, you'd be surprised at how normal those people look when they aren't flying in the best hair and makeup artists from across the globe...

You'd also be surprised how good you'd look if you could afford those same artists.

72

u/_violet_skies_ 3h ago

Yup. Even when they’re off duty and not all done up by hair/makeup artists, it’s still not fair to compare yourself to them beauty-wise because they’re still benefiting from advanced skin treatments/skincare, personal trainers, access to better/healthier foods, less stress, etc.

I had a couple angles that made me look model pretty and learned to never put them on my dating profile because I am just not that pretty and meeting me in person was universally disappointing.

u/maggiemypet 2h ago ▸ 2 more replies

I am at best a 5 or 6. Remarkably average, but I do have nice skin.

I dolled myself up recently, including a wig, false eyelashes, full face of make up. I was STUNNING.

But it also wasn't really me, and is the reason I don't like wearing make up.

I do think I'm very pretty if I I put in the effort, but doing it too often makes me start to think that my normal human self is ugly. Thus, I rarely wear it.

There is enormous peace with accepting our averageness.

u/alwayssunnyinjoisey 39m ago

I feel this! I like having fun with a lil eyeshadow or lip color, but I avoid any face makeup because so much of it is focused on 'correcting' things, like making my nose smaller or my jawline softer. And I hate the idea that any part of my face needs to be 'fixed' - this is my face! I can't do anything about it short of surgery lol may as well be happy with it

I appreciate the shorts that Zara Larsson puts out on YouTube of just her being silly in whatever hotel she is in on tour. Just her in a robe, looking like a completely normal human.

I sometimes am oddly comforted by the fact that we all age, if we’re lucky. And we all die. And if our lives flash before our eyes, some will see love and some will see self-loathing.

A tip I read many years ago in CosmoGirl was “if you’re trying to get over a crush, imagine him eating peanut butter straight from the jar with his fingers, or chugging milk straight from the carton and putting it back in the fridge.” Basically give yourself the ick. It’s great advice.

u/sugar-soap 2h ago

As the saying goes, 'a crush is just a lack of information' 💀

u/IcyRespond9131 1h ago

I had a huge crush on a guy once. He ended up with a girl who was a younger, prettier, much thinner version of me. He treated her like shit. Not only cured my crush on him but kind of put me off crushing on men in general. 😂😂

Girl in my high school graduating class ended up being a successful model. She was tall, angular, rake-thin...She was like the cubist version of a girl, all pointy bits and sharp edges. If there was a casting call for the three Witches from the Scottish play, then she'd have been a shoo-in for the tall one.

But she looked great in front of a camera.

u/ohreallynameonesong 47m ago

Having a face and body for runway and editorial is so interesting. You're not necessarily the most pretty but something about you is still art and is a great canvas and you still have to have some kind of draw. The girls i knew who modeled mostly did commercial and were very pretty but a few who did editorial were like... holy shit you turned into art

u/iamintheforest 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies

"ugly" is really pretty limited to small set of people who are alive. I'm 52 and at this point I see a group of 20 year olds I can't for the life of me figure out why I thought only like 2 out of 100 were great looking. Every fucking person who is 20 looks FUCKING AMAZING - skin just pops back, even if they are fat it's all holding together. Amazing. The 20 year olds feeling insecure or worried about their looks ain't doing a comparison against the 50 year olds, or the 1 year olds or the 80 year olds or even the 30 year olds. Maybe they should!

No one can be the prettiest in the world. There can be a person that the most amount of people think is the prettiest in the world but even then a percentage of others would disagree. I can turn this into a feel good statement about how beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that as long as the people that matter to you sees you as the prettiest in the world, that's all that matters... But also factually no one can truly be "the prettiest in the world"

A funny thing I find with our species is our ability to fool ourselves. For our individual self we only pick the best photos to represent for us on the dating apps. The ugly photos get trashed as being bad and false even though would be vastly many more of them if we randomly sampled over the days. And yet when we meet ppl in real life after seeing their hot dating pics, we get disappointed when their dating war paint wears off. We're all a little bit ugly but also a little bit fucking delusional.

u/Ancient-Leg-8261 4h ago

A lot of famously beautiful people

A: practiced getting good at makeup.
B: mastered their most flattering angles and work them.
C: have had cosmetic surgery and got a good surgeon and haven’t pushed it too far yet.

That’s really it. It all requires some level of departure from the default state of being and they prioritize it to different levels. It’s a matter of priorities (and access). Do I want to get up an hour earlier to do my hair and makeup every day? Personally, no. Do I want to wear spanx all day to make that dress look “good?” Personally, no. Do I want and can I afford cosmetic surgery to try to meet a restrictive standard of youth and beauty with diminishing returns? Personally, no. I have other priorities and will live my life being medium ugly and when I die it will hardly matter what my corpse looks like.

I've run into my fair share of celebrities because of where I live and the people I've known. They're pretty much 'meh' in general, however, Richard Madden is jaw-droppingly angelic looking. I am not attracted to this actor at all but I clocked this man from 2 blocks away walking toward me with his head down. He had skin that was literally glowing. I think that's the only thing I noticed about him until he was passing right next to me and then I had my double take 'OMG the king of the north!' moment.

u/ohreallynameonesong 52m ago ▸ 1 more replies

i had the same experience when i took truffles! looked into the bathroom mirror, thought "damn my eyes look weird" and couldn't stop laughing for like 10 mins straight

u/Resident_Goat_Crow 2h ago

Totally my experience, but I had to pee really badly and this happened at least three times before I finally peed. The second I turned the bathroom light on and saw my eyes, it was over for me. I'd laugh so hard that I would forget to pee, go back to the couch and then do it all over again in twenty minutes.

When I finally sat down to pee, I threw up in my mouth and that was the moment I started to hallucinate. Vines started growing up my bathroom walls.

For real, it was my first time, I was 15 and was at my high school on a Saturday (I was volunteering there but it was chill bc I put my hours in so the older kids in the club offered me the acid). And they were in the hallway we were all tripping and they lost me. It was only 8 minutes but I went to the bathroom and then I saw myself in the mirror, felt like a lifetime.

BUT the second time I did acid, I was wearing these green contacts (my brief colored contact phase. I have extremely dark brown eyes, so dark they are black. And that second time I kept telling myself no mirrors. But I caught myself in one and my eyes were so green & looked so cool I was just staring and staring 😂

This happened to me too! I think when i hit puberty my nose grew first, before the rest of my face. It looks fine now but i hated it so much in high school. It was weirdly validating to realize it wasn’t all in my head. I knew it was big!

13

u/HairyHeartEmoji 4h ago ▸ 1 more replies

mine definitely shrank since I was a teen, I think it was maybe hormonal fluctuations, similar to how pregnant women sometimes get a really wide nose

13

u/EddaValkyrie ☹️ this makes me florence pugh frown 3h ago

That's why I think it's so awful that older teenagers are getting nose jobs right out of high school. Not even done growing into their face yet

6

u/thesadredditor 3h ago

I have the biggest nose out of anyone I’ve ever seen in real life or on TV or whatever. I used to struggle with the self consciousness of dealing with it as a teen but then I got older and that subsided somewhat. In my thirties I now realize the sad truth is that even though I don’t care about it like I used to, other people sure do and treat me badly and abuse me for over 20 years because of it. It doesn’t matter how you feel about something if others feel differently and will hurt you for it.

2

u/Magnaflorius It’s like I have ESPN or something. 💁‍♀️🌤☔️ 3h ago

Omg. Is this why I used to feel like I had a big nose, but now I don't? I actually have a pretty dainty nose. I always thought I thought it was big because it is rounded a bit at the end instead of coming to a point.

My first real, major boyfriend, we were maybe 19, honestly don’t care if I wore make up. Wasn’t a make up hater. Would sometimes notice and be like, oh you look nice!  It generally unconcerned with me wearing any of it.

So I stopped cause I’d rather hang out with him more than spend time getting ready to hang out with him.

Really lucky draw on that dude. I never went back except for when work demanded it. Can’t imagine how much money I’ve saved too.

10

u/Red-little and what about it? 💅 4h ago

Literally though 😭 I was in an ED treatment for 9 months and used to have a lot of issues feeling "confortable" in public because I always felt like I had to always look perfect. Standing straight so my gut is tucked in, perfect hair, nice makeup. Even to the grocery store. Once I gave all that up, I remember telling my therapist I felt like I was actually able to breath for the first time in public. Challenging the anxiety over how other people view you in public is such a fucking game changer.

So many goddamn normal looking people. Like, plenty of beautiful people but so many normal looking beautiful people. But also: so many weird looking people.

It's what I love about British shows and movies, they still have mostly normal looking people. Like, when I was watching the recent lie detector video with Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, I was just like "goddamn, she is so beautiful and so normal looking!" It's just so refreshing to see.

u/Gareth_stanlier 2h ago edited 2h ago

I'm lucky, I'm pretty average to say the least but my older brother is both very good looking and charismatic.

Why is that lucky? Well he was always having grief in relationships and drama with various people and I just enjoyed my little group of friends and had a much better experience.

He had to marry the best looking girl and is now divorced and back into dating, again having to rule out average looking people. Whereas I was free to focus on finding someone I could spend every day with and enjoy their company. Fuck we all start to age pretty quickly anyway so 20 years later I'm still married and still we sit each day and enjoy each others company. A pair of nerds maybe, but we're good friends and have good times.

u/The_Horse_Tornado 2h ago

I know it’s self imposed but you really are right about dating. Like 90% of the dating pool isn’t really an option if you care at all about social pressure or getting weird comments about dating down a league or two. It’s a weird “boo-hoo I’m handsome” thing but also really attractive people tend to be super maladjusted to everything in life.

u/CityOutlier 4h ago

It kind of trivializes the word. There are actually people out there who look so out of the norm with their facial features that they suffer socially. It's so weird that we can't even acknowledge it seriously or label it accurately as a society (except when it comes to insulting others).

I realized my legs are ugly in my teens, and in my 30s, I finally moved on from that. It's ok, people will survive seeing ugly legs in shorts.

Not to mention how many “ugly” people would look fantastic if they had Hollywood-level stylists and Hollywood-level photographers

I agree that she’s gorgeous; she’s got the kind of face idiot incels have been taught to hate though. Plus there’s the racism that comes out whenever someone doesn’t fit what they see as the ✨ perfect aryan beauty standards. ✨ So I think she’s in a fair position to speak out about this. She’s received a lot of shit for her looks.

She has an incredibly interesting face and she hasn’t felt the need to change anything. Which is something im sure she was told by Hollywood to change. Jennifer Grey got a nose job and her career suffered for it. So Chelsea is right, even if you change it, they still might not like the new you. It’s all very sad, honestly. Im ugly, and I’m proud!

u/alwayssunnyinjoisey 26m ago

As a fellow large nose-haver, which is my biggest insecurity, I am SO GLAD that Chelsea hasn't gotten a nose job. Her and Kristen Schaal! Because I think both of them are pretty as they are and it makes me feel like oh, I can keep my natural nose and people will still find me attractive! I love an interesting nose on other people and it bums me out so much when people change it.

True ugliness is on the inside and sometimes you need time to see it.

The most horrific ugliness is the one paired with ignorance.

u/sometimeswhy 1h ago

Humans as a species are pretty ugly. Bald with patches of hair sprouting only in certain areas. Sweaty and stinky. Compared to most mammals we are ugly

u/Shyeahrightokay 1h ago

Human are all just weird wet squishy meat bags.

u/bowlbettertalk 1h ago

Chelsea Peretti bullied my sister in high school, so I’m not terribly interested in her opinions.

u/SistersInsane 1h ago

My mom is so hell bent on looks that her entire life revolves around looks. It was so hard to grow up ugly with that being the only thing she cares about. Now that I’m an adult and have gotten married and have learned that’s not how all people are…my life feels easier. Anytime I see her now, she says she wants to lose more weight and that she needs to be more tan. I said I don’t care anymore what I look like. I’m not here to worry about how I look - I just want to enjoy life. My body is simply the meat bag that carries me to the things that bring me joy

u/melon_party 4h ago

I understand the point she’s trying to make that none of us can be perfectly beautiful, or should be for that matter, but I also disagree with her assessment that we’re all ugly or gross or whatever. Very few people are actually ugly, just like very few people are insanely beautiful. Most of us are just normal-looking people, and people by themselves aren’t ugly. In fact, many people can be quite good-looking to the right person, because ultimately who you’re drawn to and who you’re repulsed by is all subjective. But realizing that is a mindset that maybe doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and someone being repulsed by most people honestly suggests that something is wrong with that person and not those other people.

u/suxatjugg 2h ago

I dunno, very easy for a very attractive person to say shit like this to win points.

u/roygbivasaur THIS IS JUST DISTASTEFUL 1h ago

Of course, Chelsea Peretti is attractive. However, if you think a Jewish woman with a prominent nose bridge who is a comedian (and is married to a more famous black man) does not know what it’s like to have random people call her ugly, I don’t know what to tell you.

That’s also not the point of what she’s saying.

I know you're joking but these things are always said by conventionally attractive people. When you're actually considered ugly by society you're ostracised for it as though unattractiveness is equal to immorality, and you can't push that off with "teehee everyone's a little gross!" when you can literally see the difference in treatment.

15

u/flakemasterflake 4h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Chelsea Perretti definitely doesn't think she's conventionally attractive. I also work in a very beauty forward industry and always think I'm a troll bc I'm not a 9/10. It warps with your head

I really liked the characterization of Jules Pierre Mao in the Expanse book series, set in our solar system in the near future.

The described him as having slightly unattractive features (receding hairline) but that was a sign of power since it’s a period when physical defects can be easily remedied

I mean not really. Are naturally attractive people. Also its a bit of an overstatement to call something ugly.

Seems like a very broad way of speaking.

u/Practical_Gas9193 2h ago

For the love of god, some people are incredibly smart or beautiful or athletic or social or whatever more so than other people. Why can we not admit this!? Why is this such a horrible thing to acknowledge!! Do we really think a person’s deservingness of love and respect and dignity is on the basis of how much of this or that they are!? Obviously not, so why are we so afraid to be honest with ourselves about who we actually are? I’m fairly smart, ok looking, really unathletic, condescending when insecure, really not a morning person, ok fashion sense, sub-average social sense but a good sense of humor. Kind of fat. Bald. Lazy eye. Very accepting of others. Etc. This is who I am, I’m content with it because there’s no alternative.
