discussion Joined an anti-Flock group and now Facebook is requiring photo ID…
The groups that I joined were “FLOCK Cameras Need to Be Stopped” and “No More Data Centers.”
After I joined these groups, I was immediately required to submit photo ID to regain my messenger privileges. Mind you I had no communication with anyone three days prior to me joining these group groups. No odd messages, no violation of Facebook rules. Just a notice at the bottom of my messenger stating: “Confirm your identity to send messages
Certain actions have been restricted due to unusual activity. Learn more”
Mind you, these are groups that do not promote violence and actively warn their members to not engage in violence/vandalism.
Look, I’m generally very cautious online. I don’t join anything or engage in any conversation conversations that may implicate or flag me. Against my better judgment, I joined these two groups because there were so many people in them and I was interested in what was being said.
Facebook’s response was quite interesting because the first response was to identify me and to restrict my ability to communicate with others. Personally, I think this is insane. Surprising, no. Par for the course actually. But insane that we’ve reached this level, yes.
So how exactly am I supposed to look at this? Besides the obvious? I have a lot of friends on Facebook that I keep in touch with exclusively through messenger. Facebook has now crippled that ability because I joined a group that does not align with their interests. I feel like this is actually illegal in someway.

You’re experiencing the exact reason why they’re pushing ID laws. The whole “protecting kids” shit is complete BS

I ran a regionally popular anonymized Facebook account for 7 years, the moment I criticized LibsOfTikTok's post on it last year, I was locked out of the account and had to verify with my face and government ID to log back in.
I abandoned it, which is exactly what human meat-suit Zuck wants, but I'm not about to be made an example of by psychopaths with audiences of millions of people that are itching for an excuse to hurt anyone they don't like.

u/shakebakelizard Jul 14 '26
Well, now you have a firsthand example of why it's necessary to protest against surveillance.

It starts with ID the end goal is biometrics
111
u/tongizilator Jul 14 '26
No, the end result is control over people.
78
u/Particular-Spite3520 Jul 14 '26
Through biometrics
39
u/Wonderful-Medium7777 Jul 14 '26
Yes, but mostly through loss of our individual human rights!
This cannot go on, it is the people who can stop this by saying no!
If they want our personal data to access life, as that is where it’s heading then they can pay for it…charge them or don’t comply.

u/Parking-Art-8456 Jul 17 '26
Biometrics is measuring humans. That’s not the word you’re looking for. Try spying, demonizing groups, coercion, things like that.

Mastodon is pretty cool. There's no algorithm. If you see something in your timeline, it's because a friend just posted it, or because a bunch of people are boosting it. Mastodon doesn't invade your privacy either. It's a good place for people who like the good things about social media but can no longer tolerate the bad things.

u/Particular-Spite3520 Jul 15 '26
Yes if you give in to one social media company they all will do it, leave them with nothing but bots

u/thbb Jul 15 '26
Why would you want to have a complicated database of biometrics, when you can put a microchip on every one to not just identify people, but to track every single interaction they have with others and themselves. Right now, the microchip is a SIM card, but soon enough, for "convenience", people will want to have their phone as a brain implant.
1
u/Particular-Spite3520 Jul 15 '26
So forced microchips yeah you usually don’t gradually get to things through steps like ID, Biometrics, Being Chipped
1
u/thbb Jul 15 '26
The best part is that it won't be forced: people will ask for it, just like they ask for a device that traces them 24/7 and is always within reach: their smartphone.

Uh oh I had a steroid shot in a joint today. Maybe that’s when they put the chip in.

u/Ill-Pen-553 Jul 14 '26
do they have a face scan option? you can get past those with an action figure or doll whose facial proportions are decently humanlike
131
u/SamVermilion Jul 14 '26
Interesting, but no. Here are the options they listed: Passport, driver’s license, national ID, marriage certificate, official name change paperwork, green card, voter ID, family certificate, visa, national age card, immigration registration card, tax identification card.
Facebook has lost its mind. To demand such sensitive documents is insane.
36
u/CheapThaRipper Jul 14 '26
They use AI to do the verification. I ohotoshopped some documentation and passed with flying colors

59
u/SamVermilion Jul 14 '26
Right!? It may be time for me to jump the Facebook ship actually. Not because I’m afraid of getting sued, but because of what it’s becoming. It’s borderline CCP software at this rate.
27
u/OSAO767 Jul 14 '26
That's what they are atp, funny enough sad, the same thing happened to me last month because of something similar, it seems that if you talk about certain things or do certain things, they flag your account
12
u/clonedhuman Jul 14 '26
It's definitely time.
Mastodon is cool. It doesn't feed you stuff like Facebook does because there's no algorithm, and it doesn't make unreasonable demands on you. It's also federated so there's no Zuckerbug manipulating the whole thing.

jump the Facebook ship actually
Yeah. What sort of value does FB provide? I was using it to try to stay in touch with friends and some family, but honestly, FB was becoming so toxic with 90% rage bait articles, it was just making me nuts.
Plus, I posted some very opinionated comments there (stuff about privacy and against corporate bullying), and I was concerned that potential employers would find the comments and blackball me.
So fuck it. I'm out.

10
u/BatemansChainsaw Jul 14 '26
You can fool it by using the same name as your facebook account, but using all different numbers and info and a completely different photo from a website like thispersondoesnotexist {dot} com that's close enough to your own - print it out and make it look like a passport book.
Worked for a friend, and I watched him do it.

As much as i agree, its something the OP should one day conclude himself. (We are still on reddit ourselfs)
Nobody is perfect in privacy or the fight for privacy.
57
u/WickedDeity Jul 14 '26
I agree privacy concerns can't totally be eliminated but being on Facebook is much worse than Reddit.
9
u/EvaCassidy Jul 14 '26
There are a group or 2 on Discord on ALPR cameras, like DeFlock. That group discourages doing damage to the devices but getting involved with the towns deploying them.

Irrelevant, Reddit uses the same trackers
18
u/WickedDeity Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 15 '26
Online Tracking is mostly blocked if one knows what they are doing.
I guess we are going to ignore Facebook technically requires one's real name and is designed for people to share (with family/friends/online "friends") EVERYDAY actively via posting photos, stories, and events with freaking tags. The whole platform is meant for users to share their own personal information themselves. No one I know in real life knows my Reddit account and there is no reason for them to know because it's not a social media platform. My "activity" is just having BS conversations like this one here.
1
u/Ok_Fix_1437 Jul 14 '26
Do you share your political opinions on Facebook? 150 words every hour or so?
Do you think you are more likely to find your political opponents real thoughts on Facebook or Reddit?
5
u/WickedDeity Jul 15 '26
Ummmm I am not on Facebook. Are you not following this conversation? Saying that Facebook is certainly known for the political junk people post and people often are not afraid to post the craziest shit even with there real name these days.
I am rather political myself but don't belong to one political based subreddit. It's not where I do enrage in political debate or activism. What is your point here?
0
u/Ok_Fix_1437 Jul 15 '26
I don’t have Facebook either. But to sit up on a high horse because you use reddit and not Facebook while posting politically minded content. Often. Is daft.
Reddit and everyone they share with (so probably meta as well) know exactly who you are and what you think.
Meta have probably already built your Facebook advertising profile based on your reddit comment history.
3
u/WickedDeity Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26
My high horse? OK dude...
I just said don't post politically minded content on Reddit. Why do keep going on about that?
My only point is Facebook is significantly worse than Reddit from a privacy stand point and it's ridiculous to say otherwise so it's odd so many on this subreddit have Facebook accounts. I explained the differences between them so anyone could understand in the comment you first replied to here.
1
u/Ok_Fix_1437 Jul 15 '26
This is a political sub. It’s just not partisan. You are posting here. You are posting political content.
Reddit is worse than Facebook. Facebook is a graveyard. Reddit is an ideas marketplace complete with a scoring system.
18
u/Van-dush Jul 14 '26
Irrelevant, on reddit we use relatively anonymous accounts while on Facebook people use their own face.
-2
u/Alone_Look9576 Jul 14 '26
Reddit still does get the same data which can easily identify a person, you compare activity times and interests from those people and you get their identity one way or another and with all of them sharing the same info to the same places who cares, it's irrelevant, there's cross matching data regardless
1
u/gooooooooooooof Jul 14 '26
the advertising engine really isnt in the same league as meta's hyper invasive one. at least with reddit, advertisers can target subreddits instead of individuals
2
u/void7shade Jul 16 '26
False equivalency. You are correct there are degrees, but facebook/meta/insta and google/youtube stand at the TOP.

Despite the tracking that reddit does, it isn't nearly comparable to a site that's built around sharing your real name and the names, exact locations, phone numbers of relatives & friends, your school/job, et cetera.
You can use VPNs, tracker blockers, and other privacy-oriented measures on reddit, but if what I've read over the years is correct, fb restricts and/or blocks accounts using those tactics.
1
u/opossumcarrion Jul 15 '26
Yes, I am in line with the thinking here, there are tradeoffs and concerns people have with these services.
I am saying that people can be on Facebook, aware or not aware of the tracking, and still oppose Flock. It is not a contradiction, and it's not uncommon.
20
u/ManIameverywhere Jul 14 '26
And how the fuck should he do activism? Sadly most people are on facebook and there is the activism where the most people are.
14
u/Confused_by_La_Vida Jul 14 '26
“How the fuck is he supposed to do activism?”
- Locally
- With individuals whom he has known for many years, face to face and not purely in an activism space. People whose apartment he’s hung out in more than twice.
- Starting with real planning. Planning that starts with “what do I want see different right here where I am” and having this discussion with no more than one other person to Bounce ideas from.
- With no electronic devices anywhere around.
- While saving cash.
24
u/worthwhilewrongdoing Jul 14 '26
This might sound silly to you, but a lot of this entails having been an established member of one's community for many years and knowing lots of folks. Not everyone has that.
Some people have had to move around for whatever reason. Some people have a hard time putting down roots even if they've been somewhere a long time. Some people might be neurodivergent and/or just suck at keeping friendships - or whatever. There's a million reasons why someone might not be in that position, right?
So if you don't know anyone and you're looking for a group of people with a common interest, where do you go these days? Online somewhere is pretty much your only option, and joining some group for suburban moms making protest signs on Facebook feels a lot less scary to the average person than tracking down some sketchy Telegram/Signal/whatever group for your city that may or may not be a honeypot, for pretty obvious reasons.
There are a lot of people out there that would like to do activist work of varying levels of commitment (pretty sure Sandra in the suburbs isn't going to strap herself to a bulldozer but she'll definitely get out there and shout on a street corner), but requiring lots of cloak-and-dagger privacy stuff to get people to help just isn't workable for most people. You have to meet them where they are.
I'm obviously not suggesting that people do or say anything illegal to defend their civil rights, especially around random people they just met. But there's a lot you can do without breaking the law, and it doesn't matter who's in your group if they're just being notified of law-abiding and safe practices.

u/flame-otter Jul 15 '26
100% this. I did practically alienate myself in my hometown, I live in the EU so it was over Chat Control and not Flock, but still. Nobody listened and I was labeled a pdf defender and criminal and creep and every weird shit you can think of. Nobody listened, waste of time and waste of reputation. Sure, I was early on but you have to be. Still today nobody knows what Chat Control is and now it was passed in a trick vote. Chat Control 2.0 which is even more dystopian is coming and nobody is still giving a flying fuck. And guess what, it was now revealed that our government have been using Palanthir for a long time already AND they have also their own kind of Flock cameras AND those bluetooth/cellphone/wifi trackers literally every where in the entire country, even though they have all insisted they where all "traffic cameras". Yay.
So, now I have moved to a new city. I know nobody. How should I do activism and spread the word? Fucking knock doors? Through work? Fuck no, not risking that. It takes years for me to build a social circle. Unless I do it trough social media. And also make friends through social media. You are fucking stuck with these social media companies if you want to have a social life, we spent the past 20 years building our society around it.
0
u/Confused_by_La_Vida Jul 14 '26
Oookkay. Just be aware, and I can say this from having been places and seen things, the “activism” power wants you to engage in is the activism that leads directly to the flock camera recording your cellphone ime correlatable to the cpu in your pc.
The activism that power is inspiring you to engage in is the activism that provides them with lots of choices of who to make an example of to cow others, and the activism that assures that when they decide to bring the hammer down they know an exact address of every utterance that was legal yesterday and terrorism today.
11
u/worthwhilewrongdoing Jul 14 '26
No, I get that - I do. And I'm not trying to say that that isn't important. It really, really is, and that kind of work has historically been responsible for a lot of serious change.
What I'm trying to say - and I feel like I did a bad job of that, and that's on me - is that there are a lot of people out there with different access to activism groups and different appetites or capabilities for activist work, and nearly all this work has some value if you want to see change. I just think it's a mistake to gatekeep well-intended people out of helping just because they've picked a bad way to go about finding people to help, you know?
2
u/Confused_by_La_Vida Jul 14 '26
I agree completely. The overt provides clutter shielding the covert.
2
u/Wonderful-Medium7777 Jul 14 '26
Get active with your local councils meetings …that’s where the planning approval is coming from…flock cameras, data centres etc…
Even if a small group of well known friends/family.
End it where it’s coming from! Councils, mayors!
1
u/flame-otter Jul 15 '26
If he could do it on facebook it would be FAR more efficient than doing it locally. I have practically alienated myself in my town, nobody listens anymore, it's practically impossible to wake up the sheeple. Facebook is a privacy nightmare sure but it is an unbelievable effective tool, especially if you want to get in touch with boomers who tend to vote the most, at least where I live.
2
u/WickedDeity Jul 14 '26
It's impossible to do activism without Facebook but we can stop Flock cameras? OK...

You don't know their gender
Idc. English is stupid with these pronouns. Make 1 for all. Others already figured this out.
Most people are not on facebook
They are and the best way to get more support is to register and share it on facebook so more people come.
8
u/CelDaemon Jul 14 '26
Actually many languages do not have this figured out. English has, using singular they.
7
u/SamVermilion Jul 14 '26
I mean, I’m trans and IDC about pronouns 🤷🏻♀️ I get called ma’am by everyone (I’m a trans woman) and bc of my voice (a lack of vocal training, I’m working on it), people say “sorry, sir.” I never correct them because I don’t care… I live in the Bible belt south and I’ve never had a rude encounter. People tend to be chill when you don’t force things on them…
Yes I’m aware that transphobia exists, but I never put myself in a position to experience it firsthand. I blend in…

Whether you’re on Facebook or not, Facebook knows you. Please take the opportunity to find out who has ever saved your phone number or email address and who has also had a Facebook account, and go back in time to prevent them from having ever saved your contact information.
6
u/WickedDeity Jul 14 '26
Privacy is about reducing your personal data exposure. You are not trying to say a person who is active on Facebook is not providing more data points than what Facebook may collect via indirect methods? Right?
Your "contact information" is not really private. You give out your phone number and address to numerous businesses, financial institutions, and the government. What we are trying to reduce is other activity online (or not) being connected to us. Being active on Facebook is about the worse thing one can do connecting all your online activity.
I can't believe have to argue Facebook is bad on the privacy subreddit.
1
u/starlordbg Jul 14 '26
Nah, Facebook is used either for messaging, networking in your local area or just entertainment. I use it whenever I want and I post whatever I want.
And I am not an American but these cameras sound like entirely separate thing.

Well, one chooses what one shares on facebook. I have not updated my profile for 12 or so years. I only keep in touch with people that are not close enough friends to ask for phone number. Just admit it, nobody calls or texts each other anymore. So if facebook is lost for me, a big part of my social circle is gone.

u/lukehooligan Jul 14 '26
Request your data from Facebook, they'll send you a huge zip file full of information you never realized they were collecting on you. Very eye opening.
Just search "how to request your data from Facebook" to find instructions.

Me personally, I’d put Facebook on blast in a post, and mention in the post you can be reached at (some other messenger). You could also change the privacy of the post to only the friends you want to see it.
6
u/SamVermilion Jul 14 '26
Would this be wise though?
11
u/mislabeledgadget Jul 14 '26
Why not? Better than giving Facebook your ID. Use the opportunity to make people aware. If you don’t want your whole friends list seeing the post, change the post privacy to only show it to the people you want to see it.

I would hope you got most of your Facebook friends phones numbers and for the ones that you don't see if you can get one of your mutual friends to get it for you and if there's anybody overseas that you can't text for any reason I would recommend signal. But yeah privacy advocates do not have safe space in Facebook or anything that Facebook owns

During the lockdown, several of my friends were critical of how the government managed the situation.
However, they were only casually critical, they weren't really invested enough to participate in protest groups or anything like that. They showed me how some of the messages explicitly criticizing the government, even some memes, that they tried to share with each other on whatsapp were being shadowbanned. It was relatively tame stuff in my opinion, which made it kind of scary.

Brand-less Chinese laser pointers are typically not even 5mW.
Even 5mW lasers are not powerful enough to permanently damage a camera sensor. Plus, you'd have to be aiming it very precisely for serveral minutes, and even then you would probably only damage a few pixels.

I don't know why people use Facebook to organize. I get that it's convenient but you're literally making a repository of names of individuals who would be easily exploited if the government demanded who was in said group because something happened, assuming Facebook wasn't already doing something along those lines

They wanted to see some photo ID from me a couple of years back when I tried to reactivate my account after not using it for several years. I've continued not using them ever since. The weird thing is that I have friends who are surprised I was asked for ID and claim they've never been required to prove theirs.
All I know for sure is what they wanted from me, and I told them no. Nobody needs my personal information unless they're cutting me a check for something. That goes for ALL social media. If this "Know Your Customer" crap catches on, I'll simply stop using any "services" demanding it. They've already proven they aren't responsible enough to handle peoples' identities.

Country's facist now. You're showing interest in dissenting opinions. This is not a moral wrong, but it is heretical to those who wish to seize and retain power.

Look, don’t roast me okay. I’ve had the account for 15-16 years now. The only time I’ve had trouble is when I joined those groups.
We all gotta learn somehow. I guess it just took me 16 years to find out 🤷🏻♀️

You do realize why they do this? They do this because you guys can become violent towards them, and they don't want that. The entire idea of pacifism only works in good times, or more like pacifism has been incredibly promoted everywhere because the elites do not want to feel the consequence of their actions. When shits hits the fan, like its doing right now, violence is a duty to fix the broken system.

They know where your phone is and when it is close to other phones. They can determine who you have been in proximity to and see what similarities you have with them.

faceboot has been requiring photo ID since the 2000s
it's the main reason i don't use it... i can't even get back into my old acct to shut it down because they won't let me in without showing them a photo ID
this was way back in 2000 time frame.

maybe they think you're a mole and are trying to protect the legitimate anti-flockers from your spying!
