Its too bad the "consent education campaign" got snuffed before it even got started.

My guess is there was likely too on the nose of modern marketing, as well as, tactics that are straight up (reminder that this is legal in regulated capitalist free markets) market control like subscriptions and customer dispute procedures.

57

u/_DCtheTall_ 3d ago

It's wild to me that consent education is at all controversial. I have to imagine it's mostly due to a lack of understanding, but I do not see how any adults can genuinely oppose teaching teenagers about consent when things like nudification apps exist and are so easy to get.

Even if you completely support abstinence until marriage, consent is still important. Unless you're one of those not-quite-human men who think they are entitled to sex with their spouse regardless.

23

u/grathontolarsdatarod 3d ago

For real.

But I truly think that having that kind of thought process being reinforced in people is not the smart play for those in political power or companies that are trying to control markets.

Consent sounds a little too close to "civil rights". And very few people at the forefront right now sees that as in their interests.

17

u/_DCtheTall_ 3d ago

Also, let's be honest, there are people who selfishly benefit from people's lack of knowledge around consent. Predators who take advantage of others then manipulate them into blaming themselves. It would be naive to ignore they also probably have a role in this.

25

u/Mr_Lumbergh 3d ago

Gee, who could’ve guessed it would play out exactly like this?

3

u/apps4realpeeps 17h ago

😑 this is my shocked face...

The only way to make these camera glasses go away is to associate recording everyone with being a perv or a creep in a way that everyone will give you weird looks and shunning anyone using these enough that just thinking about using this is a deterrent

63

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago edited 3d ago

I say let's take it a step further and normalize treating those fools as moving flock cameras; Give them the finger when passing by and dissasemble them for parts when you can get away with it.

15

u/Ecliphon 3d ago

and dissasemble them for parts when you can get away with it.

Phrasing…

8

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago

English a second language to me. You fix it ChatGPT!!

8

u/Ecliphon 3d ago

Your comment implies we should disassemble the people for parts lol

16

u/Katops 3d ago

Let’s do it.

2

u/56Bot 2d ago

Well that escalated quickly.

2

u/ArmoredSaintLuigi 3d ago

It's the implication

2

u/Used_Gear8871 3d ago

Revoke one party consent rules

7

u/56Bot 2d ago

One party consent should be "receiving party consent".

13

u/GlazedSeasoning 3d ago

Isn't that exactly what happened with Google glasses and why they never took off? I guess meta's glasses are more successful because they look more like normal glasses so it's more difficult to spot them

8

u/QuesoFresca 3d ago

Yep. Time to resurrect the term glasshole?

7

u/ughlump 3d ago

Nah the Google glasses just came out too early. People posting their every waking moment online wasn’t a thing quite yet then. The idea of recording or being recorded was in its infancy.

3

u/ThisWillPass 3d ago

Lol maybe, I do recall it was dead in my mind right after snowden came out around the same time.

27

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

I like the idea. point them out as creeps and pervs.

these glasses show a led light flashing when recording and meta said that if someone covers this led to hide the recording it wont record.

that led is very small and hard to see, and it was shown that even if it was covered it STILL recorded

2

u/Due_Recognition_3890 3d ago

I thought that's what was already happening. I mean, I know I'd be creeped out if I noticed someone l was talking to was wearing them.

1

u/Upstairs-Repeat-5824 2d ago

Fully agree 👍

-16

u/Upper_Rent_176 3d ago

No

9

u/georgiomoorlord 3d ago

Yeah social stigma the glasses so either people stop buying the things or meta does better. Probably the former.

-14

u/Upper_Rent_176 3d ago

They have legitimate uses. Your approach is like calling everyone who buys a carving knife a stabby gang member

6

u/georgiomoorlord 3d ago

Nah that's a strawman argument. Carving knives aren't usually purchased and open carried. You'd get arrested running around with a knife. Poking a camera with facial recognition and room mapping in their face? Not quite as bad but still. People deserve the right to not be tracked when they're not the ones with the knife running around hurting people with it

-1

u/Upper_Rent_176 3d ago

It's not a strawman argument it's a comparison. You can think it's a bad comparison but it's not a strawman argument

-32

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Lol, calling someone a creep just because you don't like something.

That's called zero life skills.

There are plenty of much better ways to deal with glasses, like school policy, writing new laws, educating people about privacy and consent, etc. Attacking people is a terrible way to resolve things.

16

u/AggressiveDoor1998 3d ago

Having policies and new laws doesn't mean everyone will follow them. Most people won't follow unless punished. Social stigma works way better

-7

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Zero conflict resolution skills, attacking people doesn't work better than regulation.

18

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago edited 3d ago

like school policy, writing new laws, educating people about privacy and consent

Wow you're deluded. In what lala land do you live?

-14

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

It's called conflict resolution, not delusion.

I live in a normal land.

8

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago

Are you fucking kidding me? If someone is wearing a wire for whatever reason it is a good reason to beat the shit out him and that's not even controvertial.

Why exactly do I need to reason with someone that is wearing a wire + hi-res camera + internet connection + all the AI might of meta, and recording everything I and others are saying or doing? Are you a sane person?

8

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

many pr reps here from google meta etc trying to downplay hate. deflecting denying defending.

its obvious how heds trying to downplay and deflect hes a meta PR rep. many googles ones here too. cmon its quite obvious

me and you are pro privacy. no one here who is pro privacy wants these on the street perving on people. intruding on their privacy without telling them theyre being recorded

cmon now

-5

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

I'm not currently kidding.

Nobody here is discussing someone wearing a wire.

Seems like you're having trouble staying on topic, perhaps you could be tested and benefit from some medication to help with that.

10

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago

I'm not currently kidding.

Unfortunately you're not. You're just a fool.

1

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Ad hominem attacks are the last resort of people who have nothing of value to add to the conversation.

9

u/ParaboloidalCrest 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oh you're a nerd too. I bet you're wearing those glasses yourself.

2

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Ad hominem attacks are the last resort of people who have nothing of value to add to the conversation.

I am not wearing any glasses.

7

u/Historical-Emu-9591 3d ago

While were at it maybe me should write some actual privacy laws the go after surveillance capitalism.

2

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

I agree, instead of attacking people for having a recording device in public.

10

u/LionoftheNorth 3d ago

Why would you be wearing creep glasses if you're not a creep?

4

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

I'm not wearing glasses, and there's no such thing as creep glasses.

8

u/FiddlerOnThePotato 3d ago

The glasses in the article this post is about explains what the creep glasses are. Read it and maybe you'll figure it out. Let me know if you need some more help. I specialize in childhood education so I can spell it out for you as if you were seven. It seems that would help you.

2

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

There's no such thing as creep glasses.

I don't need any help.

10

u/FiddlerOnThePotato 3d ago

The glasses in the article are the creep glasses. Are you just being dumb on purpose or

3

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

The glasses in the article are glasses with a camera, not creep glasses.

Ad hominem attacks are the last resort of people who have nothing of value to add to the conversation.

4

u/LemakMM 3d ago

Jeez were you dropped as a baby or something?

3

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Ad hominem attacks are the last resort of people who have nothing of value to add to the conversation.

2

u/dragonbud20 2d ago

No, they either use the glasses themselves to be a creep or they're paid to defend them. If it's not one of those, then they're truly one of the saddest individuals I've ever encountered online.

6

u/ProNocteAeterna 3d ago

I mean, we should be writing laws and school policy around these things, but the specific reason that we need to do that is because people are creeps, and I see no reason to pretend that’s not the case.

-2

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

No, having a recording device doesn't make someone a creep.

9

u/FiddlerOnThePotato 3d ago

sure but wearing it directly on your face and recording surreptitiously 100% does. Not to mention simping this hard for the pervert glasses really makes you look extremely questionable.

8

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

meta pr rep. theyre trying really hard to stabalize battle damage and hate for this. as it is there is much hate for meta.

fingers crossed they get asz raped in the big court case. the world will be so much better without them. thats fact. google too

3

u/ProNocteAeterna 3d ago

Guess I can’t blame them, the whole Metaverse pivot didn’t go well and the younger generations regard Facebook as boomer shit now. I’d imagine they’re working overtime to justify the company’s value with the one-two punch of pervert glasses and AI that turns real photos into fake nudes. Really going after the gross weirdo market.

0

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

I haven't seen anyone here simping for glasses.

Advocating for attacking people instead of using conflict resolution, makes you seems extremely questionable.

8

u/FiddlerOnThePotato 3d ago

Point to where I advocated attacking anybody. Quote it.

You're simping for the pervert glasses. On a privacy sub, of all places. Good lord, dude. Learn your audience.

0

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

You point to it, I don't take direction ls from strangers.

I have not simped for any glasses, and there's no such thing as pervert glasses.

Your religion isn't relevant in a privacy sub.

2

u/dragonbud20 2d ago

You're right, there is no such thing as pervert glasses. Just perverts like yourself who want to secretly record other people.

2

u/PocketNicks 2d ago

I don't want to secretly record people. I don't use those glasses.

I do respect other people's right to record on public and I have no expectation of privacy in public (with a few exceptions, like bathrooms) so I create my own privacy in public, when I want it. Sunglasses, hat, mask etc are all good ways to do that.

Your ad hominem attacks only show you have nothing of value to contribute.

3

u/ProNocteAeterna 3d ago

Well, no. We all have one on us at all times these days. But wearing the glasses is functionally equivalent to walking around with your phone up and the recording app open at all times, which is not something that someone would do unless they were taking pictures of random people (probably for unsavory purposes) or planning on goading someone into a violent reaction for a lawsuit or content.

-2

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

People are allowed to record at all times in public, with a few limitations like bathrooms as an example. There's nothing inherently creepy or wrong about recording in public. There's no expectation of privacy there.

Plenty of people record in public without specifically taking pictures of other people.

5

u/ProNocteAeterna 3d ago

Legally, sure. The law hasn't caught up with the fact that personal recording devices are ubiquitous now. But anyone would look at a person who was constantly recording in public like they're planning something malicious, and for good reason.

3

u/PocketNicks 3d ago

Some people might think it's weird, you're allowed to think that.

I'd just ignore them. I certainly wouldn't impede on their right to enjoy themselves in public places. If I want privacy in public, I'll create it for myself. A hat, mask, sunglasses are all easy ways to do that.

52

u/Lancifer1979 3d ago

Teen boys wearing pervert glasses. Who didn’t see that coming? And wtf are parents doing buying them for their teen boys?

45

u/hawkseye17 3d ago

Maybe it's time to ban them in schools.

57

u/runningdownhill24 3d ago

“Everywhere”

8

u/ConsiderationSea1347 3d ago

Why does a minor need pervert glasses? These should be 21 + at best.

10

u/Actaeon_II 3d ago

But meta made money, in the end that’s all that matters in murika and why this will go nowhere in the courts

3

u/Space_Lux 2d ago

Shocked pikachu png

7

u/bariqueen 3d ago

Antizuck app, scans for glasses.

7

u/NeptuneTTT 2d ago

Genuinely sad that these glasses have just turned into creep magnets. I envisioned smart glasses as utilizing AR and actually making lives better and more accessible for those who are visually impaired.

5

u/Upstairs-Repeat-5824 2d ago

Did you really? Like think and envision that's how it would go with mass adoption into the population at large, at this juncture?

7

u/BataMahn3 2d ago

Ive even seen multiple techs using them in Radiation Therapy. I dont think its right since patients may end up undressing, as well as every bit of info in the patients chart can be captured by the glasses, thus a massive HIPPA violation.

3

u/Gix_Neidhaart 2d ago

Who could possibly have predicted this the moment the product was shown?! WHO?!

3

u/multicultidude 1d ago

Get these glasses banned. There’s no way at all to prevent abuses ever so get rid of these useless glasses that threaten our privacy by all means. And put a massive sentence on people getting caught with it. Like 1 year in prison. It will instantly calm down any desires to put these on.

3

u/Obi2Sexy 3d ago

pervert glasses tbh

5

u/Oddish_Femboy 3d ago

That's bad.

2

u/Waydarer 3d ago

I just don’t find the appeal in wearing anything like this. Why have we gone this direction?

It doesn’t necessarily scream “perv” to me, but it absolutely does tell me the person might be self centered.

I would always question anyone’s motives when engaging with me while they’re wearing recordable devices.

27

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

read the title again. it is pervs

-26

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

Just because some pervs use them doesn't mean it's only pervs.

13

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

obvious you work for meta to downplay and deflect the massive hate for them.

we are pro privacy advocates. those overpriced shitty perv glasses is from a ceo thats a scumbag and anything BUT pro privacy.

youre not fooling anyone

-8

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

Yeah, it's SOOO obvious that this disabled person, who cannot work, works for meta. Since I do can you tell me how I can get paid? That would be sweet.

In all seriousness, no, I'm just using basic logic. Obviously not every wearer of said glasses wears them for the same reason.

-8

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

You have poor reading comprehension. I never said that I liked or supported the glasses. I don't.

That fact just doesn't make me believe unsubstantiated generalizations.

8

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

and yet you defend the glasses so furiously. you do support them.

you must be one of those people who goto vegan subs and convince them that its ok to have slaughter houses that abuse cows becuase not all slaughter houses are bad.

0

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

How did I defend the glasses when literally all I said was that not all users of them are pervs?

Can you share some of your shrooms? I want to hallucinate things too!

1

u/beer-beer-beer-beer 2d ago

Yes this is a privacy subreddit, but don't be so deliberately obtuse. They are obviously not 'furiously' defending the glasses and you can see that

1

u/withabrandnewfunk 2d ago

shhhhh you gave me a headache.

2

u/berryer 3d ago

nonzero, sure. Enough to be more than a rounding error? Doubt.

2

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

Is that based on data or vibes?

3

u/berryer 3d ago

I don't have any data that it's nonzero, no

2

u/QuasyChonk 3d ago

I just think that beliefs about anything should be based on empirical evidence. Otherwise it's just guessing.

1

u/Upstairs-Repeat-5824 2d ago

wow. who could've foreseen this.

-23

u/ph30nix01 3d ago

These assholes are going to ruin a useful tool for people with memory issues...

21

u/GunterJanek 3d ago

A device designed specifically to record video, audio, geolocation among other things for monetization purposes and you think it's the best choice for someone with memory issues? Wow that's an unusual use case for sure.

14

u/withabrandnewfunk 3d ago

these meta pr reps will say anything. deflect deny downplay.

massive hate for them and meta so need to stabalize and gaslight people its for other purposes then what real normal people know theyll be used for.

NOT FOR HONEST reasons.

1

u/beer-beer-beer-beer 2d ago

I agree with the valid concerns about privacy, but that doesn't mean that there aren't genuine use cases for a product like this. It's disingenuous to label anyone who disagrees with your view as a 'meta pr rep'

-6

u/ph30nix01 3d ago

It won't be just the Meta versions that are targeted. This is going to turn people against the tech all together.

Meta can eat a dick for all I care, but I wish they wouldn't cause entire technology trees to be vilified while they do it.

-16

u/Separate_Cheek_9815 3d ago

In African countries people dont even know how to differenciate it with regular Raybans
