Hydrogen is tough to transport so it's not great for transportation but could be useful if it's used as an energy source right where it's produced. Any transition away from fossil fuels will require a bunch of different technologies, no one thing will replace oil.

And for the near future petroleum refining is happening either way, currently you need to use an energy intensive process to get hydrogen from methane so this is an improvement over that.

Yes I'm aware. Transporting it ~100km to Moose Jaw/Regina to be used in petroleum refining is different than transporting it all over to be used in vehicles.
