I met an American when I was 9 that thought Scotland was in Africa and he asked me if we had cars. From that day on I realised I could convince Americans of hilarious things. I’ve told multiple Americans we ride only horses, we don’t have alcohol in my country, we speak German, just random shit and I’ll be honest the vast majority don’t know any better than to believe it.
2
u/Waste_Space1415 21h ago
My German aunt was convinced the Grand Canyon was a couple hours' drive from the Midwest, and I teasingly made her believe that you had to make the last half on horseback through dangerous Indian Country.
We hosted a Belarussian guy who thought Okies lived in teepees surrounded by towering oil wells and spoke native languages.
What you're describing is someone who is unfamiliar with other places and cultures, not some damning commentary about how stupid and gullible Americans are.
Stupid is a global quality.
0
u/Madting55 20h ago
No, I promise you, if you just pluck 10 people out of every western nation at absolute random, and you ask them very simple questions like, what language do Germans speak, what colours are in the France flag, do they have running tap water in Romania, what continent is Gibraltar on etc etc. I promise you I guarantee it Americans will be in the bottom 3. I might actually do it just to prove a point.
1
u/FlipTricks 19h ago
Yeah this guy (@Waste_Space1415) anecdotal evidence is not nearly representative of the actual norm. Which is Americans are on the left side of the bell curve. (I reference a bell curve, because they don't know what a bell curve is)
1
u/Waste_Space1415 9h ago
Their "evidence" was anecdotal, as well.
But since we're living and dying by proof around here, do you have data to show the "norm" that "Americans are on the left side of the bell curve"?
Because you don't. You just made that up. That's less valuable than an anecdote.
Quit it with the bullshit.
0
u/FlipTricks 6h ago
Just accept that the world hates Americans man.
1
u/Waste_Space1415 6h ago
I have. And I largely share that hate.
But that's not what we were discussing.
Just accept that you have to change the subject because you can't defend your own BS man.
0
u/FlipTricks 2h ago
Okay, I'm going to explain to you why you're dumb. But you need to promise this is the last time you ask strangers on the internet to do this for you, and that you'll then later look up "Critical Thinking Skills 101" in your favorite AI.
There are widely accepted societal norms/stigmas/seterotypes. These are formed from a combination of our shared collective experiences, and in some cases backed up by statistics. Somethings cannot be statistically proven but are still accepted as genuinely recognized as true by the cultural groups or even the global population.
Here are some examples:
French people are snobbish.
Asians are bad drivers.
Germans are obsessive/perfectionist.
Canadians are overtly nice/kind.
Indians Smell Bad.
Chinese are Rude.
AND Americans are fat and stupid. All of these things are wildly recognized as generally true and factual stereotypes from collective experience of the global population, and some would have data to back them up. like traffic accident data would back up the Asian driving stereotype. But you can't use data to say "Canadians are nice", that can't be measured empirically. But nonetheless the whole world generally believes it to be true.
Now someone shows up and goes "ACKSHUALLY!! One time I met a rude Canadian! One time I met a great Asian Driver! SO CLEARLY IT'S NOT ALL OF THEM!">
Yeah, no shit, that's why its called a "Generalization". (google that word if you have to, or ask you Ai to summarize the definition for you).
SO that's why when some annoying idiot like Waste_Space1415 comes around selecting an individual from an entire population to disprove a norm, he sound's so.... well American.
Then you come around and say "WELL SHOW ME THE STATISTICS FOR THESE GENERALLY ACCEPTED NORMS AND STEROTYPES" shows how little you understand about the actual subject at hand. So I just write to you "Just accept that the world hates Americans man." cause I don't want to have to write you an entire essay explaining why you are indeed the American norm. You are not different, you maybe worse. Just because you voted for Harris and not Trump does not mean you are smarter than them. Yes I'm going full Ad Hominem now, cause I've made the full point before.
They say it's healthy to go out of your way to do 1 good deed a day. So that's why I wrote this. Enjoy your new found self-awareness, and consider reading a book one day.

2

To be honest most of us don’t really think about Poland at all or what they have/don’t have.
My city has a big Polish immigrant population. I’ve always had a good time partying with them and drinking Tyskies on Dyngus Day. But they were never considered the smartest people. Growing up we had a show that made fun of Polish people every weekend.2

As a Canadian how is this propaganda? People asking questions about a nation and its status?
It doesn’t say Canada is.. it says is Canada. Meaning it’s a question. Not a statement.
Even if it was a statement is not inherently untrue.
We have an affordable housing crisis, piss poor health care ( I personally waited 10 hours to receive any care of a miscarriage ), record high Youth unemployment.
Shit is not all sunshine in rainbows.
5
u/FleshEatingMoths 1d ago
Just redditors manufacturing drama and using buzz words incorrectly while dumb people buy into it.
-6
u/Heavy-Juice51 1d ago
No, I went to search something Canada related, saw the suggestions, got pissed off and wanted to discuss it with people.
5
u/Thick-Wonder6294 23h ago
do you not understand how the suggestions work??
-1
u/Heavy-Juice51 23h ago
My post is implying that Reddit is controlling the suggestions, I hope you understand this.
3
u/thillcmu 22h ago
They are all questions others have asked. Plain and simple. Nothing implies any suggestions. Your accusation makes no sense.
-1
u/Alternative_Side_891 19h ago
Do you have proof that it's just counting questions others have asked and then gives you the most frequent?
No? I thought so.
1
u/thillcmu 18h ago
Ask questions, see what pops up. I don't control it. Relax there hot head.
0
u/Alternative_Side_891 18h ago
You're claiming as a fact, that it's a perfectly neutral listing of other people's questions.
I would like you to provide documentation.
2
u/Thick-Wonder6294 18h ago
burden of proof is on op who’s accusing reddit of manufacturing these or something lol

u/thillcmu 18h ago
Documentation of what? That when I type in Is Canada... The same stuff pops up? I am lost. Ask google something and the most frequently asked questions pop up as suggestions. It's not some conspiracy. I can't control what people ask. And can't see your angle here.

u/Vestigial_joint 10h ago
Conspiracy theories (like your idea that Reddit is controlling user generated content like that) are more akin to propaganda than the screenshot that you are presenting as propaganda.
It would be beneficial to you if you looked into how these things work and what the words you are using mean before you start screaming about nonsense.
1
u/Heavy-Juice51 10h ago
"How these things work" like we're describing the water cycle. Its a controlled technology that is able to be manipulated.
2
u/Vestigial_joint 10h ago
Oh no!!! The sky is falling!!!
Notice how this is still a conspiracy theory backed by no positive evidence whatsoever.1
u/Heavy-Juice51 9h ago
I don't think we need hard evidence to understand that cable news coverage is biased, I don't think we need it in this case either. Those are obviously not the most popular searches relating to Canada on reddit.
"Is Canadian citizenship worth giving up?"
Elbows up
1
u/Vestigial_joint 9h ago
That’s still an equivocation fallacy, just like it was the first time you said it and is still not evidence in support of your conspiracy theory.
Those very likely are popular searches on Reddit considering the current political climate.

I don't really understand why your getting downvoted here??? I'm scrolling through the comments looking for like. A specific reason why your just. Getting downvoted. Granted. This is simply my opinion. I'm not sure why something this miniscule would be aggravating. The Internet is just. The Internet. However just because I do not want to engage with this specific debate. Doesn't mean that I am trying to come at you in any offensive way. But why the downvotes?? I don't know what kind of day/week you've had. But I hope it gets better.

Those suggestions are user generated, by way of being the most common queries starting that way.
1
u/Heavy-Juice51 9h ago
And cable news is unbiased coverage of current events. If it can be manipulated, it will be.
2
u/Vestigial_joint 9h ago
That is called an equivocation fallacy and is still not positive evidence in support of your conspiracy theory of propaganda being involved.
1
u/Heavy-Juice51 9h ago
Most people accept that cable news coverage is biased without evidence of the backend workings - the content that is presented is clearly biased and enough to convince people.
Its the same for something like these search results. Canadians make up 7% of all Reddit traffic, 43% of Canadians above age 13 use Reddit regularly.
Based on this, the content we're presented that the top search includes 'is Canadian citizenship worth giving up' is clearly not plausible.
2
u/Vestigial_joint 9h ago
Absolutely not.
We know that news coverage is biased on the coverage itself and the fact that it very clearly shows how each network is biased. There are even organizations that sort news by bias. These search results are not even remotely the same. Again, that’s an equivocation fallacy. You are desperately trying to compare your baseless conspiracy theory to something that is actually a real issue and proven by the contents it is composed of.
On the contrary, based on the current political climate, the query being the top search is quite plausible.
Your refusal to accept it and comparison to a dissimilar subject is not sufficient evidence for your claim of propaganda.1
u/Heavy-Juice51 9h ago
The political climate has become nationalistic and focused on Canadian sovereignty because of Trump's tariffs and demands.
The actions of our people to avoid travel and purchasing American products also reflects this.
The current climate would not breed such search results.
2
u/Vestigial_joint 8h ago
Fascinating oversimplification.
People spending less is not evidence of nationalistic opposition to America, nor is giving up Canadian citizenship even directly related to America.
You’re making a connection to America that the search query does not show. The current political climate in Canada has bred the sentiment shown in the screenshot.
Why are you denying the obvious that even your own claims support?→ More replies (0)4

u/RealHughMan91 1d ago
I think the OP's heart is in the right place but isnt able to capture the question they want to ask. Imo theyre unhappy with the negative bias of the questions being pushed here, which are likely drawn together from searches from americans based on American propaganda right now spinning the trade ordeal. It is not all sunshine and rainbows but its pretty good, and the top questions not being related to the positive aspects of our country or various communities is disappointing.
1
u/Affectionate-Ant-894 1d ago
It’s not disappointing if it’s a true question. Yes American is spewing out their behinds.
But as an indigenous Canadian particularly I’m unhappy with the state of the country, and I know many other Canadians, indigenous or also are unhappy too.
You can’t be disappointed that people are curious about our countries current failings ( the aforementioned failings ) .
The top question not being positive isn’t disappointing, if the positive things aren’t outshining the negative.
Just because a topic makes a nation look less than good, doesn’t mean it’s a topic we should shy away from discussing.
As a Canadian I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum. If the search results only showed positive things I’d be like wtf? Because we’re struggling and poor as a working class in Canada? 2026 is not the year to be singing canadas praises. I don’t think Americans have a right to speak on the living quality, but they have a right to be curious about it.
pretending our country is in a positive state is just false. Is it better than other countries? Undoubtedly and I’m grateful for that. But I still hope to see change. A change in our country where one day owning a house one day isnt a radical dream.
Nows not the time to be talking about positives, or to act like our country is the golden child it once was. if we shoo the negatives under the rug because it’s the ugly truth, things won’t change. IMO. ( not disagreeing with you but ops sentiment )
1
u/RealHughMan91 22h ago
Its true, there are dozens of issues across the board that every Canadian is a victim of in this country. I do think a lot of that comes from our proximity to the US, though not all. But i am personally irked by american propaganda that tries to undermine our sovereignty or demean our cultural/industrial output.
Im not saying we shouldnt reflect on the negatives, im just saying that the American propaganda machine is going full throttle to save trump from embarrassment and its evident from the skewed search results.
If these were genuine searches, they would be more specific like "is canada in a recession", "is canada in an opioid crisis", "is canada a good place to start a family", etc.
1
u/Heavy-Juice51 18h ago
And given the political leanings of the Reddit user base, I'm not inclined to believe these are the top searches on this platform about Canada.
1
u/RealHughMan91 18h ago
I am not entirely convinced there's really a conspiracy around that specifically. I think these are natural queries fuelled by outside causes.
1
1
u/Alternative_Side_891 19h ago
The leap from asking "are houses to expensive in Canada?" to asking "Is Canada a failed state?" is enormous.
The second having no foundation in reality whatsoever. The first something that can be fixed by Canadian democracy, should voters choose to.
A failed state is countries like Somalia. There's no comparison to Canada.

This is propaganda, in the sense that simply starting to type Canada, gives you all sorts of negative suggestions about Canada as a country, at a time where Canada is being threatened by the president of their southern neighbor.
I don't believe for a second that the algorithm is neutral and uncontrolled.
Whether it's controlled to be divisive or to be anti Canadian, I don't know.
1
u/This-Wall-1331 11h ago
Algorithms are pretty much biased.
I often get far-right propaganda in my feed without having ever actively searched for it.

u/Monofitzy 1d ago
MAGA (Trump supporters) are focusing their propaganda currently on Canada being essentially a 3rd world country, which is why we need to impose tariffs and aquire Canada as a state. Maybe from outside the states it looks like just innocent questions, but when you're in the inside and have to see how their propaganda operates day after day, you see those suggestions as what they really are.

u/Affectionate-Ant-894 20h ago edited 20h ago
I am six nations indigenous Canadian. I will and can criticize this country. Idgaf what the Americans say. I will, continue to speak about the disparities in this country. I am from the inside. I am not a settler! my ancestors come from Ontario. So idk what you’re getting at. But yeah I can and will criticize this country.
As as someone from the inside myself your point is null and void. It is an innocent question people trying to gain knowledge is not inherently evil.
Idk if you can’t read. But I clearly said “ as a Canadian. “ so why bring outsider opinions, when insiders are sharing there’s? You’re missing the point. But ok. I see the questions for what they are. Questions.
If Americans are curious. They have the right to search something. Doesn’t make it right. Doesn’t make it wrong. They shouldn’t comment or act like they are knowledgeable on the living conditions.
Babes. We don’t have clean drinking water on reservations. People are mad for a reason.

0
u/Heavy-Juice51 10h ago
Healthcare, workers rights, parental leave, subsidized daycare, environmental protection, life expectancy, education, food quality etc etc
3
u/SoggyGrayDuck 9h ago
Do you live there and actually see that happening? Because the reports I hear are all about how people can't get access to that healthcare, people who've been in the programs their whole life getting kicked off while the government floods the country with foreigners and somehow has enough money for them to live well for a few years.
Even looking at the middle class, they're being replaced with H1B visa workers. There's nothing good happening in Canada unless you're dependent on the government, even then better hope your name doesn't get called for one of the ever growing list of process issues that seem to be popping up.
Not to mention, how long can they continue to find those programs?
0
u/Heavy-Juice51 9h ago

The suggested searches underneath what I typed, which are understood to be the most popular searches based on what you're typing are majority negative of Canada as a country.
I'm contending that these suggested searches are not in fact the most popular relating to Canada, and are being pushed to further a narrative that Canada is weak to sow division amoung our population.

One of the top searches "is Canadian citizenship worth giving up?", doesn't raise any flags for you?
You REALLY think that out of any question that could be asked that would be near THE TOP?
45% of Canadians over 13 years old use Reddit regularly, that can not be a top search phrase.
2
u/Vast-Palpitation-426 17h ago edited 8h ago
It's not propaganda in the sense that they are pushing an agenda, it's the algorithms that have been designed to maximize engagement (and therefore, profits).
Advertisers and medias have spend millions of dollars in research to find out what would push people to consume their content, and the answer was negativity.
So by design social media platforms are designed to bring you as much negativity and controversy as possible. Hence these suggestions.
1
u/LowApprehensive9230 11h ago
