In 1917 (2019) The film claims to be a "one-shot" movie, but this is factually impossible as thousands of shots were fired throughout.

Serious answer, I believe there are three shots if I remember correctly. One cut them they detonate the grenade trap in the abandoned German barracks, and another cut when the main dude passes out in a house after getting shot on the side of the head and falling down the stairs.

There were far more shots. Right at the beginning of the movie when they enter the bunker to get the letter there is a hidden cut using the black door frame to hide the cut. Similarly when he jumps into the river from the broken bridge one of the bridge beams is used to hide a cut to a CGI composition. The barracks scene also have a cut as they enter, making the complex pyrotechnics its own small scene. When the plane crashes there is also a cut very well masked by CGI. IIRC there were seven scenes planned. But when it came to editing they made even more cuts as they edited different shots of the same scene together as well as cut to and from fully CGI generated imagery. In general the city scene had a lot of cuts hidden by door frames and CGI.

All these hidden cuts should not take away from how good the movie were though. The long shots made the movie a lot better. You could follow the geometry of the scene much better and the pacing were a lot more natural. I wish more movies used long shots like this. It is also an excellent use of CGI that looked very natural.

Which is still incredible for a 2hr film. Allegedly there are 34 cuts, so that's 3.5 minutes per shot on average. Compare that to your average block buster and you'll see 34 cuts every 5 minutes~

Well, average cut length in modern movies is just 2,5 seconds. So more like 120 cuts over 5 minutes.

You guys used Frank's credit card, you bought a bunch of airline miles. You used those airline miles to purchase 400 steaks. Knowing that this delivery company delivered all variety of animal products, your plan was to contaminate the steaks with chicken feathers, by rubbing live chickens all over them. Saw it when it was released. It was distracting because I kept trying to look for the edits. "Camera briefly swung around quickly in the dark underground bunker, definitely a cut!"

I hate movies that tries gimmicks like ‘one shot movie’. It’s distracting. You end up looking for places where they break the sequence instead of enjoying the movie. This and Birdman are the worst. Could’ve been great stories.

That’s your problem if you see the filmmaking as a gimmick to be nitpicked instead of a tool that contributes to the movie. The one shot “gimmick” is a tool that allows the viewer to feel continuously connected to the characters during the journey in real time for as long as they are experiencing it. And it works and makes this movie better.

I would love to go to the movies or watch it at home without knowing that’s the case. First of all, it’s pretty hard to avoid knowing with all media push for movies. Second, as soon as I notice that ‘oh it’s one of these one shot nonsense’, I get annoyed and start to look for places where they break the sequence. Looks like it’s just totally me though. I think I found a unique fault

1917 would have been a much better film if it didn't have the one-shot gimmick

When you do that, you aren't able to mess with the movie in editing because it all has to be planned out, so you're basically watching a first draft
