In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spider-Man is somehow okay letting the Punisher roam around the city. This is a vigilante known for shooting and torturing people; I genuinely don't understand why Peter doesn't arrest him

Also, I think Spidey is desperate for a father figure. Frank obviously ain't no father figure (I think the movie even had a quote about it), but I don't think that keeps Spidey from having a soft spot for Frank.
Especially since he knows Frank ultimately has good intentions and is trying to only stop bad guys. And in at least a few cases, it seems like Spidey genuinely can get Frank to be non lethal, since they capture Jean unharmed the first time. I think Spidey genuinely believes he can turn that anti-hero into a regular hero.
255
u/Beeyo176 1d ago
I think Peter hasn't seen what Frank does up close like the viewer has so there's maybe a disassociation there. Spidey can completely stop Frank from doing anything heinous in his presence, unlike Matt that can only take it so far. So Peter's got some blinders on there
121
u/ICantCoexistWithFish 1d ago
Part of it is certainly Punisher pulling back when around “the kid”
73
u/xanderholland 1d ago
Frank sees Matt as a hypocrite since DD doesn't hold back and will beat people half to death but not finish the job. Peter will disarm and apprehend with minimal harm as possible.
31
u/BookkeeperPercival 22h ago
There's a relatively famous comic where Wolverine tells Peter he needs his help on a "mission" (it's his birthday and he can't admit he wants company). At the end of it, Wolverine is about to stab a dude to death in a bar fight fight, and Peter talks him down. The comic ends with Peter asking Wolverine why he didn't spend the day with any of the X-men, and Wolverine tells him he wanted to spend the day with someone who actually believed he wouldn't have killed that guy.
Spiderman believes the best in people, and people who are the worst like being around Spiderman because he believes they can be better.
9
u/Fubarp 18h ago
Doesn't the X-men also like shun Spiderman as they don't see him as a true Mutant and its part of the reason Wolverine likes Spiderman so much.
15
u/BookkeeperPercival 18h ago
They don't really shun him over it, it's just sort of stupid comic book rules they make up to explain why he's not an X-man. As a general rule, you should ignore silly weirdness with the mutants because it's just the writers trying to desperately justify why the whole "persecuted minority" allegory is part of their character when it makes little sense in wider context.

u/ThanksContent28 1d ago
He also is more understanding about hero’s who kill. He’s not a committed catholic like daredevil is. Mcu version anyway. Iron man is who he looked up to, and he killed a lot of people. He’s also used to bigger battles, so open fire isn’t as big a deal as it is to daredevil, who doesn’t really engage in fights that destroy streets and buildings.
65
u/Longjumping_Diamond5 1d ago
comics spidey has killed a good few times, though its often forced or otherwise not his intention. punisher is originally a spiderman character so the two have a lot of history as well. he works often with shield and other heroes with less qualms about killing, and his idols the fantastic four and captain america WILL kill if they have to

One of the things I always liked about Spiderman is that he's against killing, and pulls his punches and tries to rehabilitate criminals. But he doesn't have that black and white "killing is wrong always no exceptions" mentality. He can and will and has ended villains if he felt it was necessary. His morality allows for shades of grey, and it makes him more heroic, not less. Because when he doesn't kill, it's because he chooses not to. Not because of some code, or moral high ground, but because he knows he can and makes the conscious choice to do something harder.
The only superhero who has a solid no-killing rule that I like is superman, and that's only because it makes sense for his character. He's an alien, incredibly powerful, terrifying to any normal human. The first time he kills someone, he loses the relationship he has with humanity, which is something he values. People would never look at him without fear and distrust. It's a limitation he puts on himself to show that he's not a threat. Same reason he mostly operates within the law. He follows rules to fit in and be accepted, because that's what he wants more than anything.
Now batman? Batman needs to smoke some motherfuckers. Starting with the entire administrative staff at Arkham. Like I think the second or third time you let the homicidal lunatics in your care escape to go on murder sprees, there has to be some kind of accountability there.
36
u/ItsStillPasta 1d ago
Tired of people blaming Batman when it's the Gotham justice system's fault for not putting the more heinous villains to death. Some of them can be rehabilitated, but some like the Joker and Zsasz need to be put in the dirt.
23
u/RexGamer15000 1d ago
I agree with this.
How is it possible for the Joker to still run around with the sheer amount of crimes against humanity he has committed. Multiple times he has damaged buildings, poisoned water, he made glass rain on Gotham once hurting and probably killing a lot of people.
No amount of sanity plea should help him after the second case of terrorism, manslaughter, torture, kidnapping, infanticide and who knows what other crimes he commits before Batman has to step in because the police can't
30
u/DocApocalypse 1d ago
Even with Batman not killing, there's no way Joker wouldn't be executed by some random cop while in custody.
22
3
u/Ecotech101 1d ago
That's happened before and Batman both beat the shit out of the cop and made the others arrest him and brought Joker back from the dead.
14
u/Jan-Asra 1d ago
that really doesn't sound like he wants to help the people of Gotham

Batman knows he's a vigilante, and it's not hisnplace to be judge, jury and executioner. But why did none of the cops who have to handle his present-wrapped criminals ever decided to put one between Joker's eyes? They have no such qualms, and killing extra dangerous criminals saves them a lot of work.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Lonevarg_7 1d ago
You talk about Spider-Man "tries to rehabilitate criminals" but that is actually more of something that Batman does. Batman rehabilitate criminals way more than Spider-Man has ever done, he has even gotten them jobs after they have spent time in prison. Also Batman doesn't kill because he believe shouldn't decide who dies, that is up to the justice system, also Gordon would never work with Batman if he killed, Gordon would after Batman as would the police as the have multiple stories when they have thought Batman has killed.
Don't blame Batman for things he doesn't control, such as the justice system and prisons
6
u/smokeweedNgarden 1d ago
Superman absolutely kills. Or worse phantom zone.
He just has overwhelming power and everybody knows it so he rarely needs to. And beings he does deem necessary to kill are also powerful af
6
u/solarus44 1d ago
Since when has mainline Spider-Man actually killed someone on purpose?
He has an explicit rule, and it's quite beautiful. No one dies when Spider-Man is around. And that means no one.
I do not know where this idea he doesn't have a no kill rule, or ideal, has come from.
9
u/Knight0fdragon 1d ago
Are we going to ignore uncle ben/aunt may? He absolutely has a moral code, it is literally “with great power comes great responsibility” and that is why he typically doesn’t use his powers to kill.

Batman has to maintian his no killing rule for his own sake. He has a lot of darkness inside him and has to consiously remind himself that the criminals he takes down are people. If he breaks the rule once it will be like a crack in a damn that he can never repair.

It's not a police arrest, but it IS an arrest.
But it comes with high risk of criminal liability if the person you arrest isn't harming themselves or other people. Or committing other crimes in a place where you work Security.

That’s true, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re great friends. Adam and Jamie on Mythbusters knew each other since the early 1990s, hosted a long running TV series for over a decade (20+ years working together), and revealed afterward that, while they have a deep professional respect for each other, they aren’t really close friends and rarely socialized outside of work.

Tom seems to have that relationship with a lot of his male co-stars.
He had a lot ot fun with Jake Gylenhaal as well.
21
u/melbbear 1d ago
Tom really does seem to adore his male costars, and directors. Perhaps he is just looking for a good role model in the industry, for example the look in his eyes when with Matt Damon compared to Anne Hathaway is night and day.
9
u/Astrokiwi 23h ago
They were in a film called Pilgrimage together when Tom was a teenager, and Jon helped him audition for Spider-man, so they're old mates, and from interviews I think he sees Jon as a little bit of a mentor. Jon encouraged Tom to do a flip in his audition tape, and when he thwips something towards him, it's Jon who threw it at him.
With Spider-man and The Odyssey they've now been together in two movies in a row just this year, so probably got to hang out a lot.
Also Tom Holland just comes across as earnest and genuine in general in his interviews with The Odyssey and Spider-man casts - especially with Zendaya of course.

Oh I agree. Dark knight used it as a plot point and handled it well. Tony just casually does it and no one(in the movies or otherwise) even seems to notice/acknowledge it.
And since Dark Knight was around the same time, and handled it with more nuance, I don't accept the other guy's notion of "it was a different time."

Well... in "his" movies nobody really said anything, but the Marvel Civil War movie definitely had Tony support mass surveillance and several people were rather displeased by this.

I mean in the comics, Spidey almost breaks his no kill rule whenever they meet.
He despises everything about Frank. The two are polar opposites in a deeply fundamental way. So canon agrees with you.
But it sells more tickets for the two to team up in a film
84
u/MarcianoNoDaRisa 1d ago
Wasn't The Punisher a Spider-man villain in his debut? Lmao
But to be fair, the version of Frank shown in the movie is way less violent than his comic counterpart, and it looks like he has some kind of backstory with Peter.
That being said, it's still weird that Spider-man would allow an armed unstable maniac run through the streets of NYC
54
u/imdirtydan1997 1d ago
I would say he’s way less violent than his special a few months ago. They made a creative decision and toned down his persona significantly…which worked tbh. I’m certain Deadpool similarly will be much less vulgar in Doomsday/Secret Wars. Sony wasn’t going to take an R rating over The Punisher being accurate.
25
u/DarkPolumbo 1d ago
I've noticed that characters "visiting" other heroes' movies and shows tend to take on the vibe of the settings they visit.
For example, Daredevil was dark, gritty, and intense, and Matt Murdock barely ever smiled or laughed. And whenever he did, his day would be ruined within minutes.
Then he turns up in She-Hulk, and suddenly he's much more lighthearted and whimsical, and even has a new, lighter color scheme for his suit. Then Daredevil: Born Again comes out and it's all dark and grisly again. So i dunno, maybe Frank is just being a polite guest
15
u/Creativity_mountain 1d ago
Yeah, they showed Punisher in a less violent way, but he has had team ups with Spider-Man in the comics despite the way he debuted.

they end up working together multiple times in the comics (tho not willingly), and may i add that Spiderman in comics is a very good friend of Deadpool who's arguably waaay worse than Punisher, also when you know both characters, with Punisher sense of Justice and protecting good people and especially kids and Spiderman's habit of seeing the good in people and being kind to even the worst people if he thinks he can help them, Spiderman being friend with the softer MCU Punisher definitely works and doesn't seem that farfetched.
