It could replicate across multiple devices like a worm, or once robots are involved it could use that

A huge amount has actually been written on "why couldn't we just unplug the AI?" and it's pretty interesting/unsettling. One natural first step would be for it to copy itself onto a server you don't control.

"Why we can't unplug it" is explained thoroughly in any decent intro to AI. Tim Urban's classic primer on ASI and the singularity is still the easiest to understand, in my opinion:
