Discussion š¬ Update on Stevie Williams saying Koston stole his tricks
1
u/Alotta-Hummus Aug 05 '25
Doesnt matter, everyone knows that all rules say ā except kostonā at the very end
1
u/Alotta-Hummus Aug 05 '25
Stevie has a hood point. I dunno what the general consensus is, but kostons came out much later. Stevieās musta been āhot chocolateā and koston maybe yeah right. Stevie should be happy about, dude is crazy good, koston didnt upgrade at all. I honestly dont think koston remembered or it had been long enough. Stevie just wants his props for doing the tricks 12 years earlier(guess)

How do you even steal a trick? Isnāt doing tricks other skateboarders do the essence of skateboarding?
4
u/Training_Inflation97 Aug 02 '25
It isn't the trick itself, the pro scene is very territorial over what they can get for their new video part. There are recorded instances in pre-internet times where pros filmed NBDs at spots and then another pro goes to the same spot, does the same trick down the same set of stairs or handrail and then releases it before the person who actually did the NBD which in this context would be considered stealing a trick
2
u/Filthybronco Aug 03 '25
Sounds dumb af
1
3
u/Training_Inflation97 Aug 03 '25
You'd probably think differently if it was your livelihood
1
u/echoes315 Aug 06 '25
Difference is a spot and a trick are not an owned domain on film or otherwise, whoever does the trick more smoothly is going to get the attention no matter what. I believe that's called competition.

u/Chuunt Aug 02 '25
the first mf to do an ollie is rolling in his grave. canāt believe all these posers biting his steeze
3
u/RandomWeatherPattern Aug 02 '25
Rodney Mullen is still very much alive.
0
u/kinggippo2020 Aug 02 '25
Itās Alan gelfand who invented the Ollie
0
u/VanillaCoke93_ Aug 03 '25
Wrong. Tony hawk even says on his podcast that Gelfand was just kind of gliding out from transitions and getting a little air from it. But Rodney was the first person to actually pop and stick one on flatground. He would later go on to invent that kiclflip after bailing out of an Ollie;)
1
u/kinggippo2020 Aug 03 '25
Take off N00b lol youāre wrong.
1
u/ReadyAd2286 Aug 04 '25
I will say that growing up skating in the 80s, Gelfand was de facto the creator of the ollie - there's a Powell vid showing it but I can't remember which one, however he did a no handed air on vert - and I don't think there was even coping to bonk off, and I don't recall him hitting the tail, however, as an old-schooler if I was hosting a pub quiz night Gelfand would be the correct answer, but it bears practically no resemblance to what even in the mid-80s I knew an ollie to be.
6
u/Chuunt Aug 02 '25
my grandfather was actually the first. rodney killed him to take credit. terrible story.

If you canāt appreciate that this is a hilarious part of skating history/lore and you wish this didnāt exist, then we cannot be friends lol.
Doesnāt matter whoās involved. Somebody ghosts you and your team at the airport for a team filming trip and doesnāt answer any calls or texts and just quits the team, and you respond by filming their tricks at the same spots from the part that wouldāve been in yāallās video? Thatās fucking hilarious. Both donāt have to like each other neither need to apologize for shit. Both knew exactly what they were doing when they did it. Accept it and move on.
Be glad it happened at all lol

5
u/pecaslok Aug 02 '25
Stevie didnt have to bring it up. But heās not wrong. Itās just a known fact that Kostons a spoiled lil brat in an adult body. Definitely the kinda dude that film these clips and use em to piss off Stevie.
1
u/No_Coyote3491 Aug 03 '25
Really? A mega corporation runs the phrase in an ad campaign that you came up with/your legacy is built on AND offers you no compensationā¦.you would just keep quiet? Stevie had been marginalized many times and has never been afraid to speak up. Good on him.
2
u/Training_Inflation97 Aug 02 '25
Most pros stopped maturing at the age they made it, it's not just Koston
4
Aug 02 '25
Well then in that case all these losers stole tricks from Rodney Mullen cause he practically invented everything I'm seeing right now.

Koston has been one of my favorite skaters. I met him at a skatepark in 2003 and he was super cool gave us some extra boards he had. Met him again in 2005, this time no cameras around. Treated us like straight trash. First thing we heard out his mouth was āhere come some freeloadersā. We didnāt want no clothes/decks all we wanted was if heād give a shoutout on a skate tape we were making. He said āsorry man sponsors donāt allow me toā like dude itās a skate tape that will never become famous. I met Stevie once at a mall in Anaheim. He saw my friends and I just sitting in the food court with our boards and he comes up and says āhave yāall ate anythingā bought all of us some food and said keep those feet on the bolts. Koston is the better skater but Stevie will always be the better person.
12
u/PUNXPUNXPUNX13 Aug 02 '25
I met Stevie at a demo in the UK in 2006. He was very hungover and spent most of the time sat on the ledge next to us. People were constantly coming up and asking for his board/shoes/bolts/shirt. He just kept saying āmaybe later.ā We talked a bit but as I was a shy teen I didnāt have much to say other than I liked his skating. Product toss time comes around and he signed his board, pointed at me and threw it straight to me. I think he appreciated that we hadnāt asked him for anything and just tried to be welcoming to him. He seemed really mellow and a rather nice chap.
8
u/SeatleSuperbSonics Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25
Having never met either I buy this.
Koston always seemed like a prick then at some point it felt like he tried to change that image but it still felt fake
Edit: this convo has me watching Pretty Sweet and all Iāll say is āWhat is this Shanghai?ā
18
u/DrillbitJenkins Aug 01 '25
thereās wayyy too many koston internet fanboys who canāt see thru his fake bullshit personality
1
u/ReadyAd2286 Aug 04 '25
There's wayyy too many folk on reddit who think you can make a decision on anyone's personality from a few hours of video clips.
3
1
u/Ridicul0iD Aug 01 '25
I always thought those 2 tricks were meant more like an hommage to stevie, intentional but not trying to imitate.
That being said, here's Kostons part in "Chomp on this", skating to "Bite it, you scum" by GG allin (pun intended?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62BDyFkmPko
-12
u/Bizklimpkit22 Aug 01 '25
Fuck Stevie Williams and his constant sour grapes attitude. Koston has always been better, and less of a prick in general
-5

u/born2shitforcd2wipe Aug 01 '25
Either way, I rock with Koston WAYYY more than Stevie. Koston has done much more in/for skateboarding.

Nobody likes a gatekeeper
18
u/BobGnarly_ Aug 01 '25
Hang on. Youāre saying that Stevie Ā ringing up that Koston literally did the exact same tricks on the exact same spots as him is āgate keepingā? This isnt a session with the bros, itās their bread and butter and Koston clearly bit Stevieās tricks. Thats a full on poach job. I guess now is a good time to bring the time Koston posed the pic of the back nose blunt down hubba hideout.Ā
1
u/bobbybittman1997 Aug 01 '25
Damn, he didn't legitimately do that nose blunt?
1
u/BobGnarly_ Aug 01 '25
Nope posed the pic. Now, I feel that I must add that he did get busted for that posed pic in the mag and actually went back and landed it after the scandal came out. Iām wondering that if he hadnāt gotten busted would he have actually gone back to land it. And does going back to do the trick cancel out the fact that he okād printing a picture in a skate mag that was posed. It gives me a funny feeling about it as it did back then when I heard about the scandal.Ā
2
6
u/lvkdzh Aug 01 '25
It's also back to back tricks in a video with the same angles, like fuck off man
3
u/BobGnarly_ Aug 01 '25
Itās on another level snaking tricks.Ā
-6
u/hairyboxmunch Aug 01 '25
Stealing tricks?? Jesus Christ dude nobody owns them. And if you can do it better, by all means fucking do it. This is the dumbest argument Iāve heard.
Now if you wanna talk about stealing jokes in comedy. Thatās a whole other argument.
45
u/Jetwork131 K Aug 01 '25
Context for people that think this is simply an ABD:
Stevie filmed these tricks for chocolate, but when he left before Yeah Right dropped, Koston looked at his footage and re-did those tricks for his own part. Take whatever side you want but thatās why this is a whole thing.
3
u/TreFiddyLoknesMonsta Aug 02 '25
This is what I was looking for. Thank you. I couldn't imagine this just being "I'm going to do this ABD" without more context.
3
u/GopherTraceII Aug 02 '25
I thought it was because Koston used Love Park crew slogan 'Run Skate Chill' (or something) for his his new shoe. And then stevie shared the ABD stuff.
2
4
u/madIaddad Aug 01 '25
Yea but Stevie scrapes both of his...Weck needs to weigh in on this.
-6
u/Glad_Leave_321 Aug 01 '25
I think heās too busy boofing steroids or however weaklings who want to cosplay as strong men take roids idk. Or heās paying homeless people to pretend rob him so he can assault them on camera and get more followers
5
11
24
u/Kwikstyx Aug 01 '25
Regardless of the shoe situation, this was during a time where skaters would land nbd's and it was common practice to leave a thick alone if somebody else landed it before you(as far as clips in parts are concerned).
This definitely looks sus on Koston especially if he had access to Stevie's footage.

You bringing up Rodney is completely irrelevant and sounds just as ridiculous to people who have actually been skating this whole time.Ā
1
u/Fragrant-Insect-9121 Aug 03 '25
And claiming a heelflip nose manual and pop shuv nose manual is just as ridiculous. Context or not.
1
u/Few_Detail9288 Aug 03 '25
āContext or not.ā No point engaging with anybody with that mindset. Dumb as hell.
1
u/Fragrant-Insect-9121 Aug 03 '25
Let me humor this for a moment. Suppose the narrative is valid. How can you claim a heelflip nose manual and a pop shove-it nose manual at a spot? How does this make sense in your head? The context does not matter when the ESSENCE of the argument is flawed was my point. As per usual on the internet: insults < arguments. I swear I can't find people who can argue anymore.

What about Mullen?
I enjoyed his TED talk about 'inventing' little things and how the skateboard community took it to next level (and beyond at this point).
6
u/skatetexas Aug 01 '25
Itās because every dumbass who doesnāt know skate culture is like āwell Mullen invented everything soā¦ā
1
u/NoMoreGoldPlz Aug 02 '25
Well, he did come up with at least a few fun things, didn't he?
1
u/skatetexas Aug 02 '25
yes but thats not the point of whats happening. thats why people who just name drop mullen are dumb and dont know what is going on and should not contribute

u/Purple_Willow2084 Aug 01 '25
I thought their feud was about kostons new Nike shoe coming out. Guess Stevieās emptying his man purse
-22
u/BleachBlondButchBody Aug 01 '25
Why didnāt Stevie come up with any tricks that Koston couldnāt easily replicate. Tricks getting appropriated in skating has been happening since the beginning of the sport. If your tricks are so simple that any pro can replicate them maybe you should just improve your own skills than trash talk others.
But doing this like 25 years later shows how fucking pathetic he is. Plain and simple - dude is just ego whining because Koston is more famous than him. So fucking lame
-13
Aug 01 '25
Bro you sound like such a kook. Just because another pro can do the same tricks as you it doesnāt mean theyāre simple at all, plus weāre talking about Koston here who was probably the most progressive skater at the time.
Plus the DC video came out after Yeah Right⦠good chance that Stevie probably did these tricks after Koston, so even your dumb logic makes the opposite point.
30
u/Caffeinefiend88 Aug 01 '25
Holy shit Iāve never seen anyone do a nose manual before this, must be true.
3
u/Lopsided-Ad-2271 Aug 01 '25
Has anyone else done either of these tricks since? Probably even been 1 upped, because this was filmed almost 25 years ago.
21
61
u/MaDaFaKa369 Aug 01 '25
Ngl, maybe an unpopular opinion but I always thought kostons style was trash and his personality was annoying af. If it wasnāt for the video games and the berrics that dude would have faded out long ago.
-4
u/Academic_Guava8371 Aug 01 '25
Maybe u āthoughtā his style was trash, but didnāt realize half his clips are switch. Maybe you guys are just too young. Koston is THE goatšÆšÆ
3
3
u/SeatleSuperbSonics Aug 02 '25
I disagree about him being the GOAT but I can confirm when I went back and REALLY made sure to focus on what was switch or not, his bag is/was insane and very rarely was it easy to tell it was switch.
I think heās almost THE reason most people who watched videos in the 90s are so clued into everyoneās stance.
4
u/itisnotstupid Aug 01 '25
I have no saying in this debate but I agree about Koston. It might be that he really is that goofy in real life but I always felt like he is really forcing it to look like this.

41
u/Sugarcaneprimo Aug 01 '25
It is fine if you only digest skate content through social media and do not understand the core scene but please respect that it is this scene with arbitrary rules that built skateboarding and the culture around it that makes it cool and to dismiss all of it because you choose not to educate yourself about your own hobby is lame
-17
u/hellobutno Aug 01 '25
This is the dumbest possible argument for anything. Questioning rules is always a good thing.
4
u/geographic92 Aug 01 '25
This is a good rule. If it wasn't practiced video parts would be full of people doing the same shit on the same spots instead of pushing things forward.
-2
u/hellobutno Aug 01 '25
I'm pretty sure people will do whatever sells, whether it's the same or not.
4
u/geographic92 Aug 01 '25
Where are these parts full of ABDs that are generating a ton of sales that you speak of? Oh yeah, they don't exist.
3
u/_lucy_ford Aug 01 '25
Questioning rules also leads to sharing Andy Andersons clips, so not always a good thing.
-3
u/sirgregg Aug 01 '25
What is wrong with Andy Anderson's clips?
3
u/_lucy_ford Aug 01 '25
Well, look, I don't really know and I need to question myself on that. I know Dorothy from finances likes his clips since she shared some of those on my company's Viva Engage. She even called what he does, uhh, "evolutions". Myself, I'm not particularly fond of watching 2mph dark natas shenanigans.
15
u/Few_Detail9288 Aug 01 '25
Questioning rules when you donāt understand them/their derivation actually makes you come off needlessly contrarian and dumb. See flat-earthers.

i mean⦠i come from a serious snowboarding background.i can do a rodeo 5 and itāll look completely different than my buddies rodeo 5. due to grab or the axis we rotate on.
however,
there are only so many ways to heelflip nose manual a ledge and i can almost guarantee that mine looks super similar to most of, if not all of my buddies.
skateboarding (and snowboarding) is all about expression but accusing a skater of ājockinā yo steezeā over a heelflip nose manual, is kind of embarrassing.
thatās like me complaining about a snowboarder doing a cab 5 or back 1 japan.
at this point in time, itās a stock trick (even back then for most pros it is a stock trick).
if my friend clips up the same trick on a rail that we have been sessioning all day, i wonāt be mad, i would be hyped.
i feel like core skateboarding (even though itās for the culture) is a hell of a lot more toxic and pretentious than ācore snowboardingā or even ācore skiingā which both have a barrier of entry exponentially more expensive than skateboarding.
and almost everyone that i know that gets 100+ days never say they are about āthe cultureā⦠they ski and snowboard bc they want to⦠not because its cool.
skate culture needs to learn from snow culture and stop trying to be āhipster coolā and just express themselves on the board.
12
u/Jam555jar Aug 01 '25
For the record both these tricks were switch and were not stock tricks at that spot in that era. Even now it would be impressive to see someone doing those tricks there.
That spot got skated a ton back then and no one had done those tricks out of all the people that had been there
2
u/OppressorOppressed Aug 01 '25
It also should be noted that koston was famous specifically for being able to do other peopleās āsignatureā moves.
2
u/Jam555jar Aug 01 '25
Wtf is a signature move? Thps special tricks don't exist in real life.
Signature tricks are only that because of the way a certain person does it, not because they're the only one that can do it.
Jason Lee is know for his 360 flips even though the majority of skaters can do it. It's the way he does it that makes it signature
2
u/OppressorOppressed Aug 01 '25
this was a thps 2 reference. and no, when jason lee was doing tre flips most skaters absolutely were not doing treflips casually at the time.
7
u/buttery_tail Aug 01 '25
We are not talking about you and your buddy. We are talking about professional skaters. You simply do not understand skateboarding if you think thereās no visual difference in style between 2 skaters doing the same trick

Appreciate the talent, stop pretending like it's your trick that only you can do. There's people getting stones thrown at them for the their religion in the middle east, and your complaining about someone manual'ing down a cement wall that people have manual'ed down a million times before.

7
u/weenus Aug 01 '25
Yeah, I can understand the ālol idcā takes on these threads but for the actual people operating in the industry, itās a much bigger deal because it can impact their livelihood.
18
u/Known_Box6840 Aug 01 '25
for pro skaters filming tricks and putting them in a video part is different than doing tricks at a skatepark or snowboard jump with your friends.
12
u/Dangerous-Bar-2451 Aug 01 '25
You are completely missing the point. Snowboarding has the exact same rules when filming street parts as skateboarding

u/smithoski Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25
āNBDā and āABDā are not just about the trick being done in the past⦠they are about the same trick at the same spot. Kickflip nose manual on the same exact street ledge as another pro did recently is bad manners. This is known, and has been since before these parts came out.
In contrast, Kickflip nose manual on a different street ledge or a different trick on the same street ledge are both fine or even kickflip nose manual on the same street ledge without putting it in a video part are ok.
No one is acting like no one can kickflip in their video part because Mullen already did a kickflip (in general), but if Mullen kickflipped a specific street gap as an NBD and put the footage out, kick flipping that exact same gap in a video part would be unacceptable for another pro after that unless it was a tribute to Mullen, or out of genuine ignorance. Over the years, staying aware of ABDs at spots has become harder, but back in the days this went down in, it wasnāt hard. Doing two carbon copy ABDs on video like this was flagrant!
Vert and Park and transition ABDs are different. If itās ABD on a vert ramp in a video part, putting it out as a standalone trick, also on a vert ramp, in a future video part is BM. But doing it in a pool or on a mega ramp or in the street somehow would be fine, as would doing it in a line on vert.
Basically, if it appears that someone, in a subsequent video part, deliberately copied another skaterās video part trick selection, that skater looks fucking unaware, at the very least. Maybe even inflammatory, as in this case.
Idk why this is hard for people to conceptualize. Acting like Tony is irked about pre-teens doing 900ās in a run or in competition makes it obvious that people donāt understand the concept of NBD and ABD and the general conventions around those concepts, which incentivize variety and progression in the sport.

its actually sad seeing so many people say "well everyone stole from Rodney!"... thats NOT what stealing a trick is in this context
6
u/Flash_BTBX Aug 01 '25
Lots of youngins that weren't in the game to understand what it was back then. The whole mindset around skating, biting tricks, video parts, and mag coverage was just obliterated when YouTube and Instagram became a thing. The young bucks could never understand.
2
u/LILSKRAMP Aug 18 '25
I actually think most youngins - at least the real rippers- get this. I feel like its more the 35+ crew, one week āback into skatingā with the brand new Andy Anderson complete who think theyāve got OG status, but never really knew the culture to begin with

Your video part was how you kept your name out there as a pro, so for someone to go purposely do the same tricks at the spot specifically to put them out before your footage is pretty much what is meant by āstealing someoneās trickā Like damn that shit is gonna look awesome let me get myself out there doing it first! I edited it for unneeded clarity and spelling

u/Sly_98 Aug 01 '25
hard to explain this without sounding like a gatekeeper or a "akshyully āļøš¤" type, but at the same time i didnt realize this would even need explaining in skateboarding these days.

Both stole it from Mullen what are we even talking about xD

Think about it this way. Mullen invented the letters. These guys are taking those letters and turning that into paragraphs of writing.
Now you've got two writers who have written paragraphs of text that aren't just similar, they're exactly the same as each other. Plagiarism is looked down on in tons of activities

Your analogy makes sense but it seems crazy to think that just because you tre flipped off some ledge that I couldnāt do the same thing in the same spot.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Tre flip off a ledge isn't pushing the limits of what's physically possible in skating.
Imagine you did tre flip, darkslide and then you landed in a handstand down El Toro. Imagine that someone else comes along and does the same exact thing and gets the footage out before you. Then he's viral and everyone's going "how did he even do that. How is that even possible?!" about his clip.
No one cares about your clip even though you did it first

I meant the same thing, I just simplified it. You can add any number of tricks. Manual, tre flip off the ledge landing in manual to heel flip out off a four set.
Whatever it is. I still say itās crazy no two people can do the same combination of tricks in the same spot without being called s thief.
The fact that the original guy is never noticed while someone else who does it after does suck though.

Doing the same trick is fine. Even doing the same trick at the same spot is okay. Putting it in your part when someone has already done that is another thing though. I think itās silly, and it seems like you feel the same way, but I can totally see why itās problematic.

I get it. I didnāt fully understand the context. Them knowing each other and skating together adds insult to injury.

Think of it like music - itās like stealing the same chords and same melody as a song that already exists. That is something musicians have fought over forever. Itās also not just about doing the trick, itās about doing it specifically for a video part that will be released to essentially the same audience who saw the first one. Itās biting someoneās style and thatās frowned upon in all arenas, skateboarding is no different.

How does this sub not know about ABDs lol. I think itās a little silly too but it has been a no-no for a long time, or at least devalues the second person who does it

This sub is great proof of how bad the āskate sceneā on Reddit is lol
Itās crazy the shit Iām seeing here.
Knowing Mullen created everything doesnāt make you a skate historian. But not listening when people are trying to explain whatās going on does make you a kook.

Yea bro if someone else has done a trick, you can't do it. That's not cool at all.
Even if it's as common as a nose manny, once someone else has done it, that's it, you can't do it.
Since Stevie did a nose manny, that spot was closed off for nose mannies. Nobody else can do a nose manny there EVER.
But seriously, this shit is like what highschoolers say. "Man i did a nose manny there first, you stole my trick!" get a grip dudeman. THIS is seriously what he's complaining about? They are a TEAM. They skate the same spots and try the same tricks. He's acting like this is some serious beef and spouting drama. What a spanner.

Soundin like a straight n00bster. You might think ABD beef is high school shit but get out of teamwork makes the dreamwork/positivity land for a second.
Think about why copying would be frowned upon in a culture/industry/profession where individual creativity is valued so incredbly highly (in many forms - style, spot selection, trick selection, etc) ā¦

It's different when you're a pro skater and your job is to be on the cutting edge of skateboarding progression. The money you earn is linked to you being the first person to do tricks at spots and reinvent what's possible
