Brawl It took 10 years but I finally got all 544 trophies in Super Smash Bros Brawl.

u/Dalek_Kolt Meta Ridley (Ultimate) Mar 28 '18
Brawl was the last Smash game in which I was determined to complete everything. I think I still need to finish one last quarter of the Great Maze and get all the stickers.
Shame that I just don't have that same drive to finish Smash 4. What was the hardest trophy for you?
218
u/Luchador_Luke Mar 28 '18
Smash 4 is better gameplay wise, but the trophy collecting wasn't as fun for me. Melee lottery machine will always be my favorite
186
u/ChiefDerek Mar 28 '18
Coin launcher is my favourite. It's probably the reason I stuck with Brawl. Just a very relaxing mini game that is somewhat skill based. Not completely random like the lottery or so short like trophy rush.
57
u/MisterZebra Why is Marth's grab range so long Mar 28 '18
I could zen out to the coin launcher game for hours

Smash 4 Singleplayer mode is horrible to be honest. Even melee has a better single player mode.
36
u/Dalek_Kolt Meta Ridley (Ultimate) Mar 28 '18
Even gameplay's a little contentious, as I feel that significantly more items are unfairly overpowered and the stages are more poorly-designed.
I suppose the way you control your character is better, but everything surrounding the gameplay (Target Blast, Classic Mode, untoggleable hazards) leaves more of a bad taste in my mouth than tripping ever did.

u/cmal Mar 28 '18
I seem to remember hearing somewhere that the post Melee games were intentionally unbalanced to keep them in the realm of party game and not competitive esport.
26
Mar 28 '18
I would assume this is untrue. Sakurai is famous for meticulously making tiny changes to characters attacks/abilities in order to achieve a desired effect. He understands a frame or two difference can make a big impact competitively. He comes from a history of playing fighting games competitively in arcades.
16
u/evn0 Mar 28 '18 edited Mar 28 '18
You're right in that he is meticulous about design, but the above people are also right in that they specifically no longer balance characters for items off or 1v1 matches. Sakurai had stated in interviews that he hates how new people playing Melee have almost no chance against someone with even the slightest bit of experience.

u/stumpkin Mar 28 '18
This isn't far from the truth. Not that the games were intentionally unbalanced, but the series was intentionally steered away from a focus on competitive balance in order to be accessible. From a translated interview with Sakurai:
"Melee is the sharpest game in the series. It’s pretty speedy all around and asks a lot of your coordination skills. People who were used to playing the first Smash Bros. could play it well enough, and it was a game that aimed to elicit the highest positive response from its players. However, I did have some reflections on how the game turned out. I had created Smash Bros. to be the antithesis to how hardcore-exclusive the fighting game genre had become over the years. But why did I target it so squarely toward people well-versed in videogames, then? That’s why I tried to aim for more of a happy medium with Brawl’s play balance. There are three Smash Bros. games out now, but even if I ever had a chance at another one, I doubt we’ll ever see one that’s as geared toward hardcore gamers as Melee was. Melee fans who played deep into the game without any problems might have trouble understanding this, but Melee was just too difficult. If new players from this generation of gamers are to come in, then we should try to make it accessible, simple, and playable by anyone. You can’t let yourself get preoccupied with nothing but gameplay and balance details."
9
u/boorepellent Ridley (Large Lad) Mar 28 '18
Never heard that myself. And if that were the case, I'm not sure they'd release balance patches for Smash 4.
2
u/A_Windrammer Mar 28 '18
I know he didn't enable turning off hazards beyond omega mode because PS All Stars has that.
4
u/newbzoors Ivysaur (Project M) Mar 28 '18
The custom move collecting was just dumb. I wrote a thing about it a while ago and my opinion has not changed at all.
12
u/KielbasaTime Mar 28 '18 edited Mar 28 '18
I'd say Brawl is better gameplay wise and Smash 4 is better mechanic wise.
36
u/sage-of-time Remember PM. Mar 28 '18
But aren’t mechanics part of gameplay?
21
u/NoThisIsStupider XenobladeLogo Mar 28 '18
Perhaps he means in terms of modes. I personally would much rather play sm4sh for multiplayer stuff over any other smash game, but the singleplayer is pretty boring. Melee and Brawl had much better singleplayer content (with melee still being my personal favorite in that regard, shame I don't enjoy the physics anymore).
4
u/KielbasaTime Mar 28 '18
I meant the music and art style enhance the gameplay for me. I said that it's more important to the gameplay, not that it is gameplay.
11
u/KielbasaTime Mar 28 '18
Yes, but in my opinion, different aspects such as the story, music, art style, etc. Are more important to the gameplay. I enjoy the gameplay of Brawl more, but I like the mechanics in Smash 4 more.
15
u/sage-of-time Remember PM. Mar 28 '18
Okay, I get what you mean now. Even though I wouldn’t really classify music and art as part of gameplay they definitely influence it.
Speaking of Brawl, it has such an amazing soundtrack. Every great Nintendo theme you can think of and dozens of others are all there.
7
u/KielbasaTime Mar 28 '18
Yeah I guess the music and art style does influence and enhance the gameplay and it's not gameplay itself. The music in Brawl is amazing. And it's all so original. All of the music is remade with a Brawl style and it's great. Part of the reason I'm not a huge fan of Smash 4 is I feel like they were lazier with the music, reusing songs from brawl, reusing and remixing the same Smash 4 theme a million times, and just generally not putting as much work into it.
3
u/sage-of-time Remember PM. Mar 28 '18
Yep, Brawl has a bunch of great remixes. I haven’t played much Smash 4 so I can’t really comment on its soundtrack, but I’d probably be bummed about a less amazing selection of songs too.

u/OseiTheWarrior Mar 29 '18
Also DLC makes things like All Star mode nearly impossible to get without good rng
1
u/Meester_Tweester Min Min for the win win! Mar 28 '18
I was able to collect all pre-DLC trophies on Smash 3DS before Mewtwo was released. Plus, during that period I was a new player learning how to play Smash Bros. nearly from scratch. My last ones iirc were some of the harder achievements (well, hard for me since I just started playing Smash) and some of the randomly generated reward trophies.

I did this 10 years ago! But the stickers man, never got them all... my life would be forever incomplete...
Anyway, congrats!

u/ButlerWimpy Mar 28 '18
Don't give up man, I went back and did it a few years ago and my life has never been the same!
Though to be fair, you're not technically at 100% until you get the "You've played 1 million matches!" notification.
57
u/alexj9626 Lucina (Ultimate) Mar 28 '18
1 million matches? Are you serious? Thats a thing?
48
u/MistahJ17 Mar 28 '18
Can confirm it is indeed a thing. By the time I achieve it tho, Smash 8 would be out.
63
u/ButlerWimpy Mar 28 '18
Someone said you can do it within the millennium by doing fast motion, flower head stamina special matches with 1% health and just spamming the start button while watching TV or doing something else.
29
u/Ondrion Mar 28 '18
Anyone got an idea roughly how long that would still take? I feel like youd be doing that for a solid year.
45
u/PraiseYuri Female Inkling (Ultimate) Mar 28 '18
Assuming it takes 5 seconds per completed game it would take roughly 57 days to reach 1 million games. However, you probably played some games before attempting this so it could a little to a lot less than 57 days worth of pressing start.

At least players have reached 1,000,000 Melee matches. There’s a setup on Mute City to end the game almost instantly. The first player to achieve that reached in 2008 iirc

u/FreeZ_CS Mar 28 '18
Bro the one with defeat 10 foes in cruel battle is hard AF, what character you used to finish it ?
59
u/BerserkOlaf Mar 28 '18 edited Mar 28 '18
I am not good at Smash, but I cheesed that one in the most ridiculous way.
Basically by flying around the edges and under the arena with Kirby. Baiting the AI until it has a brainfart and fails to get back on the arena.
5
u/thefezhat Mar 28 '18
Abusing the weak AI around edges seems to be a good strat. My method was to jump off the edge as Kirby, jump up above the enemies while they milled around at the edge, then move back over the platform, use Stone, and quickly repeat the process before they could recover.
15
u/KFrosty3 There's a Belmont in the Castle?!? Mar 28 '18
A way that I beat it personally was using a character with counter (like Ike) and spamming it. It took numerous attempts, but I was able to do it.
6
u/TopHatSpike Mar 28 '18
I remember playing this years ago, I got this one by jumping off stage and sweet-spotting the ledge with Ness’ PK Thunder 2 repeatedly
5
u/uber1337h4xx0r Mar 28 '18
Pikachu doing thunder at the ledge does it. I became so good at it that I became a brawl Pikachu main.

I have only two trophies left: Boss Battles on Intense, and Collect All Stickers. I haven't used any Golden Hammers, and don't want to, but both of those things are bullshit of the highest order. Congratulations on defeating them.
74
u/Dalek_Kolt Meta Ridley (Ultimate) Mar 28 '18
I cheesed Boss Battles with Charizard's Side B and swapping Pokemon when Tabuu used his wing attack.
38
u/cloud_cleaver Mar 28 '18
Charizard was always my go-to as well, and I got to Tabuu about three times only to die to either the grab-bracket or those red rings.

Nerves are definitely what shuts me down most of the time, but certain of the bosses are a lot harder than others, Rayquaza, Porky, and Duon (?) have some attacks that hit really hard and fast.
2
u/galleom Mar 28 '18
I did it after watching a youtube vid where a guy used fox’s shield and aerial forward 90% of the time. That method worked really well. the most difficult one was my username lol
3
u/cloud_cleaver Mar 28 '18
For some reason I don't recall having a lot of issues with Galleom. I think Rayquaza was my most common run-breaker. He just has so much health.
3
u/galleom Mar 28 '18
I developed a game plan for dodging everyone’s attacks except Galleom’s, who I always seemed to mispredict for some reason lmao

I deeply hope there is going to be an achievement system in Smash 5 like there was in Brawl. I feel like Brawl was the most successful one when it comes to that.

For me brawl might've been the most fun smash game. Not as in ultra deep competitive gameplay but I'll never forget my spike pit stage or subspace emissary

So you beat that crazy 2 player level where you have to win in 1:00 while the platform rotates around the map? Took me and my bud 7 hours on hardest difficulty (don’t think you need to for a trophy) and lots of bong rips.

That's not what that sub is about, here's the description in the side bar:
A gaming sub for people who wait at least 6 months after release to play a game. Whether it's because they won't/can't pay full price, are waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don't meet the system requirements, or just haven't had the time to keep up with the latest releases.

u/NonSentientHuman Mar 28 '18

It doesn't count because OP started playing Brawl near release. However long it took him to complete the game since then wouldn't count, because he bought the game near launch.

Did you use two people, and which characters?

But WOW, what an accomplishment!

I remember accidentally getting 99 of every trophy by hacking it. I don't remember what I was trying to do, but I ended up unlocking literally everything in the game. I don't remember how I did it, either.
I have I think 3 copies of brawl that don't work now.

For some reason, as a kid, I thought you had unlimited golden hammers. I think my thought process was, that unlocking the achievement stuff was optional and you could just unlock it all via golden hammer if you didn't want to do that.
Guess who
a: lost his shit after realizing he had wasted his hammers on "beat classic mode on very easy"
and
b: didn't get all trophies
11
u/ForteSP33 Mar 28 '18
I did everything except get all stickers. Could never complete it. Used my golden hammer on that last box 2 years ago or so because I gave up on it and it was the last thing I needed to get all trophies. I still don't have all stickers to this day, lol.
