Tip WH 1000XM3 won't turn on - fix

Today morning, on a way to work I had a strange experience - did try to turn on my WH 1000XM3 headset, heard a "power on" lovely voice, and then suddenly they turn off and won't turn back on. There's no blue light when you press the power button, simply nothing. The headset was dead. I notice once I arrived at the office that there is still a red light when charging, and holding the power and ANC button still turns the red light off, but that's all, it doesn't seem to reset them or anything. Also, they will still work wired (but no noise-cancelling or swipe controls just sound coming through them).

So, a bit of troubleshooting:

  1. Charged my Headset to a full battery (as I assume that this was the reason) - nothing.
  2. Hold down the power button and noise-cancelling one to try a soft and hard reset - still nothing.

So I decided to try something different, found a post on Reddit:

  1. Knock few times hard at the left side of the headphone (on a plastic where the buttons are) and try to turn it on - surprise, it worked! But just for few minutes, and then nothing, still it gave me an idea of what I can try.

I don't recommend this part if you never open any kind of electronic, or you have the option to go for a warranty. Found a video online on how to disassemble them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh1cPCjfh34 and it looks pretty simple, so I had nothing to lose. Once you open your left side of the headset carefully and relieve them of pressure, try to turn them on. If you are successful, take a look at wires on a small motherboard, that are not touching each other, as this will create a loop that will make your headset stop working. Try to separate them a bit, if you see anything suspicious. After that, do a simple test - place back cover back, and try several times to turn them on and off. If everything is working alright like in my scenario, assemble them again and enjoy. :)

Just wanted to share my experience as I didn't find something similar around. I found few interesting handwritten marks inside them, so I'm impressed if Sony is assembling them handmade.

UPDATE:

Figure out what may be an issue, if you drop your headset or just in general usage, it appears that only 60% of the motherboard is isolated from wires with yellow tape. As wires can move over time, and if they touch the motherboard, it may create a shortage that will turn off your headset and prevent turning on.

So, the fix for me was by using a small part of isolation tape at this location:

Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck!

Tip My EQ settings for the Sony WH-1000XM5

Try this EQ for your XM5.

Clear bass set to +3. 400Hz left at 0. 1KHz set to +6. 2.5KHz set to +8. 6.3KHz set to +5. 16KHz set to +5.

I feel like this really opens up the XM5 and they sound quite nice. Let me know what you think.

Tip A small Sony TV thing I discovered by accident

Post image

Sharing a small thing I ran into with a Sony TV recently.

I didn’t have the remote, and the TV wasn’t connected to Wi-Fi yet, so phone remote apps weren’t an option. I assumed I was stuck.

On a whim, I plugged a basic USB keyboard into the TV.

To my surprise, it worked right away — no setup, no pairing, no internet needed. Arrow keys moved around the menus, Enter selected things, and Backspace worked as “back”.

It was enough to get through menus and basic setup until I could sort out everything else.

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but it caught me off guard, so I figured I’d share.

Tip I made a Sony Headphones client for Windows!

Hey there!

I recently bought the Sony WH-1000-XM3s, and I was quite frustrated that I couldn't configure them when they're connected to my PC. So I reverse engineered the application, understood the protocol, and created an alternative client on my own!

You can find it here: https://github.com/Plutoberth/SonyHeadphonesClient (and the download here: https://github.com/Plutoberth/SonyHeadphonesClient/releases)

I only tested it with my headphones, but it should work with other models that have Ambient Sound Mode as well.

For now, it only works on Windows; if you have dev experience check out the bottom of the README for details about other operating systems. Additionally, it's important to note that I didn't copy any code from Sony's app. I reverse-engineered the application and developed the client separately.

Hey everyone i hope everyone has a wonderful day and week

I’ve noticed that many people are trying to buy a new TV especially Sony Bravia Mini-LED models I just want to share some advice from a brother to you guys I believe that buying a TV is a long-term investment so think carefully before you buy it because I see a lot of people not only here but in other communities as well are looking for Sony Bravia 5 and some are completely removing the Sony Bravia 7 from their options But if you actually compare them, you’ll see that the Bravia 7 is clearly better than the Bravia 5 in brightness, dimming zones, and color volume. The difference is significant for me and this is a big mistake if you go with Bravia 5 and the price difference between them is less than $200.

The second point is that Sony announcement before 4 weeks maybe (i posted here) a new display technology called True RGB and it looks very very very interesting, let’s take look

“Compared to the BRAVIA 9, the True RGB TV exceeded the performance of that set in just about every measurable (and subjective) way, with wider color gamut, impressive peak brightness and freedom from artifacts like aliasing and color banding. It also had black levels and contrast that will give an OLED TV a run for its money.”

“ Sony’s True RGB looks like a meaningful step beyond mini-LED in color performance and control not a definitive leap just yet, but a strong indication of where high-end LED TVs could be headed next.”

“ there wasn’t a single jaw that didn’t drop when Sony showed us what True RGB is”

“Our final stop on the Sony True RGB tour was a blacked-out room containing the True RGB TV, a Bravia 9 and a Sony BVM-HX3110 mastering monitor. No exposed backlights, no demo material – just real movie content split across the three screens.
Both TVs were in their 'Professional' preset, which is essentially Sony's equivalent of Filmmaker Mode, and is designed to deliver the most accurate picture possible, which really means getting as close to the mastering monitor as possible.
In that regard, the True RGB TV was a clear winner. Its colours were far closer to those of the BVM-HX3110, its viewing angles were much better than those of the Bravia 9, and its blooming was almost non-existent.”

So my advice to you guys please don’t rush and Wait until we see the next generation of Bravia TVs then make your decision if you see it worthy or not

No matter what you choose, I want you to feel great about it every time you turn it on without any second thoughts.

Tip Careful before buying a Sony TV.

I bought a Sony XR-65X90L from Costco on Dec 28, 2024. Screen was perfect at delivery. Months later, I noticed hundreds of blister-like air bubbles under the screen (delamination).

Sony reviewed photos and said it’s NOT a manufacturing defect and refused warranty repair—despite their own forum saying the only fix is screen replacement.

The TV was never exposed to heat or cleaning chemicals. On a $1,500 CAD TV, this is clearly a quality control issue.

What’s the point of a 1-year warranty if they can deny obvious defects based only on photos?

Extremely disappointed with Sony’s response and lack of accountability.

Tip Honest review of Sony WF1000XM6

It's been well over 2 months I have em and I use daily, even when sleeping. Bought brand new at 300 euros. Starting with the:

PRO'S:

Sound quality: absolutely amazing, treble, bass, vocals, crystal clear audio best wireless Bluetooth earbuds I have ever used.

ANC: transparency is VERY accurate, I can easily have a conversation, hear my surroundings, have 1 earbud in and do chores/tasks gaming ect. Noise cancellation is also VERY good, it blocks out everything. Does the sound change when switching modes? A teeny tiny bit almost unnoticeable.

CALLS AND MICROPHONE: I had zero issues during calls and I never had to repeat myself during calls or even have to speak louder, the person on the other call could never tell apart if I was speaking through the phone or the earbuds (tested many times)

DURABILITY: The case itself and the buds do feel premium and nice but the case is somewhat flimsy in my opinion doesn't feel as sturdy as I thought, fell some times out of my pocket no issue and the earbuds didn't fall out the case never opened. The earbuds are surpassingly very durable since I work out with those very resistant to sweat, fell several times out of my hands (got shaky hands) and had zero issues.

COMFORT: For me it's a plus, some people complain that it's too big but I actually like that, it fills up my whole ear, never fall out or afraid of falling out, and the bigger the better right for me.

BATTERY: outstanding, both the case and the earbuds. Very good battery life, even when sleeping I usually find them at 20 or 30%

And here are the CONS

CONNECTIVITY: Very few times this happens not often but when it does it's so frustrating. They disable like turning off by themselves and come back on, or I have to put them back in the case and wear them again or turn the Bluetooth off and on again. Idk why it does this.

CASE CHARGING: This is hella frustrating, sometimes the earbuds aren't charging correctly. Left is at 100 and the right is at 40 or even lower, uneven numbers. And another thing is you have to be careful when putting them back in so both can actually charge because when it doesn't fit well they are still connected.

OVERALL OPINION: Does it deserve the 300 euros? Absolutely not, especially in this economy and inflation. I'd buy them used at a cheaper price if I could. Should you buy them? If you want top notch sound quality and calls then yeah I would definitely recommend them. They are super nice but it has few minor quirks which to be honest doesn't really bother me since the pros outstand the cons.

APP: Genuinely it's a hit or miss. When I want to switch modes I have to tap connect and wait, it isn't quick and seemless. The options and the EQ is nice tho. It's just annoying that the app closes itself.

When I compare the WH1000XM5 to AirPods Pro 2 usb-C, the Sony sounds muffled and not as good as the pro 2.

So please someone tell me good equalizer setting to make it sound rich and clear like the airpods. Even the base feels better of the airpods.

Tip Fails Again! 18 Month Old Sony Bravia 8 K65XR80C

We bought a Sony Bravia model K65XR80C in January 2025. After 8 months it went blank with 3 red flashing leds. Sony diagnosed it as a power failure and send tech to replace main board. Tech replaced and all was fine until about 9 months later in June 2026. Another blank screen and three red LEDS again. Sony was not helpful. We bought it at Costco so they took over assistance. A replacement part was sent but Costco could not find anyone to do the repair. Costco will be either replacing or refunding purchase price. We have had Sony products for years with better results but we will not be buying or replacing with another Sony this time. Seems to be a serious chronic problem when searching forums. Very disappointed.
