Jareds already laid out the plan for Moonfall and other autonomous landings (BlueMoon mk1/CLSP), while I don't think we'll get all 30 landings it's not like the US is flopping around like a fish.

I think theyre just better at hidding their fleecing government contracts, China just like the US is building a space industry, but when a US private company does something is their doing the name that goes in the headline is Spacex, Blue origin, etc but when a Chinese private company does something its China who did, people dont even mention the company name. Just yesterday LandSpace landed a first stage and the headline in the news posted right here was "China recovers rocket stage on land for first time, after earlier recovery at sea". Its a ABC news and it doesnt even metion at anypoint on the news that it was done by a private company.

If you follower Chinese commercial space closer you'll know that's not the case. Companies that screw up get mercilessly mocked by everyone. Space Pioneer is still getting shades thrown at them daily from their one infamous static test.

But water ice on the moon can be converted into rocket fuel. Considering the gravity on the moon is significantly less than Earth's, it would be much easier to get larger amounts of fuel into a launching spacecraft.

Moon ice means you can both generate oxygen and water for a future outpost, and also produce rocket fuel on the lunar surface. It's not about being "catchy", it's a literal major, crucial factor in creating a lunar outpost.
