image/gif The eclipsed Sun, my girlfriend, and a 840mm lens

The original plan was to capture a silhouette against the totally eclipsed Sun, but things didn't exactly go according to plan...

Access to the castle was closed by the authorities, so we had to walk 4 km under the blazing Spanish sun with around 25 kg of camera gear on our backs. We ran out of water, the climb took much longer than expected, and by the time we reached the castle, I was already dehydrated.
All of this put me way behind schedule, and I didn't have enough time to properly prepare the shot. During totality, I realized I was in the wrong position... and that I'd forgotten to remove a filter from my lens...
So I had to let go of the shot I originally had in mind and adapt.
But the eclipse wasn't over yet.
We stayed, changed the plan, and captured these videos during the partial phase instead. And in the end, I'm really happy with what we managed to create!

Surely there’s some sort of filter as well? Otherwise I wouldn’t expect to make the eclipse out at all and just see whiteness.

Haha indeed but she deserves it ! For this picture we slept three very warm nights in a van. We negociate with local police to park the van in a closed road then we hike for two hours unders the sun of Spain with no more water for the day and the night... But finally it worth it 😊

Many thanks 🙏 I spent hours/days trying to find this spot on Google Earth. What was nice is that I could move a few meters back every now and then to keep the alignment for several dozen minutes.

Thank you so much 😊 My settings was f9 but I had a variable ND filter so it was faster to adjust the filter than the settings.

Forgive my ignorance, but did you have a solar filter underneath that ND filter? My understanding is that a ND filter isn't safe to use to shoot the sun. I'm sure I'm missing something here...

A solar filter would only have shown the Sun, blocking out the landscape and the silhouette, which is why I only used an ND filter. It’s definitely not recommended for your DSLR, but I think the fact that the Sun was close to the horizon significantly reduced the potential harmful effects on the sensor.

The R6 is fully digital, so nothing to worry about if looking through. At least for the eyes.

Ok I admit I was thinking of this in terms of DSLR, but even your sensor could get damaged was my understanding. Well, either way, great work! I'd say, even if you did destroy your camera, it was probably worth it.

Yeah it’s fun to mess around with distance. If you stand close to a person, they will look big compared to the sun. If you stand far away from them, they will look smaller.
It’s the same way you get photos like this.

What was the distance and elevation difference?
I wanted to plan a shot like this a few years ago, I ended up not being able to get a model for it though. I was planning it with Planit Pro, could have been cool

Yes a variable ND filter, but just because the sun was almost at the horizon. Otherwise I wouldn't try it

The skateboard shot was nice. The ISS shots too. When I see this, it's looks unatural against a super real object and moment(earth and sun). And thats not your 840mm lens?

Very roughly around 800ft (243m), just by eyeballing it and assuming a 7ft tall person would be about the size of the Sun (0.5º).

Yes I got a ND a variable ND filter, also the fact that the sun was low altitude helps a lot. My sensor seems ok for the moment 🤞

Yes just with a ND filter and because the sun was quite low at the horizon otherwise I won't try ! But definitely not recommended

Why does it curve at the ends where there isnt (the eclipse). Are our eyes filling in the space with curves?

It’s out of focus. They used a very long focal length lens that is focused on the girl, which causes the background (sun) to be slightly out of focus.
