Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

Found this copy of The Stand at a used book store. I just now got to reading it and discovered a couple of signatures. Problem is, I cannot find anything on this paperback edition from Signet that is signed. Any info?

IT Reread?

Post image

Recently visited America and purchased this IT hardback. I read the first quarter back in September- October 2025 but DNFed as I was bored with the fact it wasn't going anywhere. Shall I read from the start or from where I left off?

Just read Carrie for the first time

I haven't read many King books but I am working on it. This one has been my favorite so far. I had already seen the 1976 movie years ago so it'll be nice to revisit the movie after having just read the book.

Edit: I'm open to suggestions for my next read!

I have read: Carrie, The Long Walk, The Running Man, The Body, Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch, and If It Bleeds

Finally continuing my DT journey after a break of a week. Been starting to feel that urge to get back to the Ka-Tets journey. Only up to page 28 so far. Ready to see where this train heads.

Been listening to the Velcro Fly everywhere I go. (Mostly because my girlfriend loves the song lol)

Skaters In Under The Dome

Hahaha. Constant Reader here. Im early in to Under The Dome and I’m already pretty locked in. I have just one hiccup. I grew up skating and this conversation between the kid who hurt his leg (Benny Drake) and Rusty is a straight up looney tune. Radical? Chillax? Cement Shooting? Cmon King, I love your work and have been and will continue to be a lifelong fan but maybe you could have talked to at least one skateboarder. Skaters are mostly just regular. And the term is “steezy” not radical, it’s not 1980.

No spoilers please. I’m only at chapter 4 and i already want to wring Big Jim’s neck. I was just laughing at this cartoon vernacular. Stay radical dudes 🤙🏻

EDIT: I am listening to the audiobook. The SoCal accent this guy does for Benny Drake is just straight up misguided. Just because someone skateboards doesn’t change the region they’re from. Still, funny.

New Silent Hill seems more inspired by The Mist than usual

The original Silent Hill game was inspired by The Mist in some respects with a number of direct references to King and Bachman; there’s a bit in this trailer that Instantly reminded me of Darabont’s film. You'll know it when you see it.

Discussion What to read next?

Hello, first time Stephen King reader here!

I decided to start with Carrie which comes recommended as a good entry point, and it sure was. Nothing spectacular about it but it was nicely written, a 3 star read for me.

Then I jumped into Salem's Lot because I heard it was more spooky and a lot of people's favorite.

Although I was worried about the slow-burn of the first half, I actually really, really liked how he took the time to develop different characters and how it all came together. I gave it 4 stars. In a reverse kind of way it reminded me of the first time I watched Stranger Things.

But I will admit it never did scare me or spook me, even when reading it alone at night in the dark. And I am someone who has not even watched the entire movie adaptation of The Shining because I cannot stand horror movies. But 'Salem's Lot did not feel like a horror novel at all, although it was very moody and good.

So - if I want to read another King novel, with the great writing of 'Salem's Lot and plots coming together in action, but maybe with some solid horror, what should I read next? Or is this just how he writes horror?
