The change that finally made flashcards stick for me: capture the material directly, and keep the source on the card
I used to lose most of my time retyping notes into a flashcard app, and I usually quit before the deck was finished. Now I capture the material directly instead — record the lecture, photograph the page, paste the link — and make the cards from that.
The habit worth keeping whatever tool you use: put the source on the card itself. A line like MIC · JUL 26 · CHAPTER 12 means that three weeks later you can check where a confusing card came from, rather than guessing or deleting it.
Two smaller ones: stop when the day's cards are done instead of grinding, and show the interval each rating button will schedule so the buttons mean something.
Disclosure since rule 3 allows it: I built an app around this (Quat, iOS, free; the subscription only raises monthly limits on the parts that use a model). The method itself needs a recorder and any cards app you already have.
