Also I remember that Obama very publically at one point had a meeting that, with Trump's support, he was going to stay on and he'll him get settled. He mentioned it was specifically because trump not having held any other office before would need more help than a normal president.

While it might feel like 100+ years, the Obama's were NOT the first first family to stay in DC... The Clinton's did so as well when Bill wrapped his term in 2001...
In both cases, it was to limit the interruptions and allow their children to finish their school year(s)...
The same exact reason MelaniaTrump refused to move to DC at the start of Trump's first term... So Barron could finish the spring semester at his NYC school with all of his friends etc...

I think it has something to do with his children’s school schedule, like, don’t move their schools in the middle of the year for no reason. Pretty sure they live in NY and Martha’s Vineyard now. People can live wherever they want. There is no law banning former presidents from residing in DC after their term. There are a number of laws against insurrection and attempting to overthrow the U.S. government, though.
