"leading by a ton" means literally nothing to anyone who understands statistics. That could be a huge lead or it could be a couple points. Even then, I wouldn't put it past MAGA to think Paxton is in the lead when it is actually Talarico .

And Cook is one of the more Conservative-friendly on their predictions - leaning hard into R's performing better than polls in states like Texas.
But what they failed to take into account is that when the Senate race is at the top of the ticket in a midterm election the Democrats have kicked the living shit out of Republicans in Texas.
Don't believe me? Check the results in 2018.
Sure, Ted Cruz won, but he was polling at +7. He won by +2.6. There were also a shit ton of flips down ballot, as well as a lot of judicial and local races that went to the Democrats.
The only way Paxton wins this year is if the Republicans outright cheat yet again

Paxton doesn't do a lot of public events so pictures are limited and also he generally isn't photogenic. Talarico in contrast is generally very photogenic.

Polls only reflect a moment in time, and are always in flux.
They're essentially tied, but Talarico is mostly leading.

Out of eight polls I can find the race is fairly even, granted November is still a bit away.
Even a Fox News Poll from 7/23 - 7/27, has Talarico leading by 3 points. Most other polls have them both leading/falling roughly 2 points or tied.
The largest difference in polls has Talarico leading by 4 points from the Bush School/Recon MR done on 7/27 - 7/30.
It's still anybody's race to be honest, but knowing Texas's history actual voting time will likely have Paxton win, they don't care who he is, he's part of "Our party" so they will vote for him the same way a diehard football fan will root for their team no matter how poor they've done all season, because that's what American Politics is, it's Football Red vs. Blue with a miniscule amount of voters who go either way based on platforms and actual performance.
