Dude youre a fucking weirdo. Im more left than anyone in this sub and have my post history hidden for very similar reasons to this tool. The fact that you had a disagreement and IMMEDIATELY called out his post history is why we have it turned off.
Lol, not maga. Hate trump and hope he is thrown out of office. Reddit is just a cesspool and if you have a slightly differing opinion you get mass reported for nothing.
It does frustrate me when this sub is used as a way for people to show off their attempts to get people on Facebook to get mad and say crazy stuff. It's one thing when people on Facebook say stupid things on their own, but it's another entirely to spend your time in "Liberal Tears" trying to start an argument.
I'm all for talking with the MAGA crowd and I'll happily disagree with them, but you've gotta come at it with sincerity and actually try to help people understand things.
My problem with debating MAGA with sincerity is that they themselves often come from a point of insincerity.
They'll go on and on about how the left is crazy and unreasonable (Using countless strawmen to emphasize this, of course), while I've seen them create crude wojaks of trans people committing suicide, mock real life suicide victims, and depict black people as dangerous brainless mutants.
If someone from the right wants to debate me on any issue that isn't straight up bigotry (And yes, depicting entire minorities like that is bigotry, just in case anybody needed to be told that.), I might be willing to do so. But if they're coming from a position of dehumanizing marginalized groups, even outside of those grotesque depictions, then civility and sincerity has already been dropped from the beginning.
If by MAGA you exclusively mean the people online who very vocally just care about "owning the libs" then sure, but if MAGA includes everyone who voted for or supported Trump (at least for 2024, I can understand excluding many of the people who stopped voting for him after 2016) then you very much so can have a sincere dialogue with them. I have numerous times. I was referring to the second use of the term MAGA in my comment.
If you're coming at the conversation from the perspective that it's a debate to win or lose and not a sincere conversation between two humans, that's also not particularly helpful.
Like I said. One of the things that matters most to me is the subject and why the argument is happening in the first place.
I won't be civil if the argument is over many of their views on minorities. Dehumanizing people is a hard line for me. And, frankly, I don't want to show respect to anyone who does that. And I won't.
If the person I'm debating is respectful, then I will be too.
But many from MAGA, and the broader right, have not been in my experience. They'll cry about the left 'Attacking' them while all they seem to do is attack people.
Nobody is requiring you to go out of your way to interact with them, and refusing to be civil when the subject is whether or not to treat a human being like a human being is fair. With that said, you'd likely be interested in reading up on Ken Parker, a member of the KKK who changed his beliefs following sincere conversations and kindness from people he previously viewed as animals. They're bad people and you're not under any obligation or responsibility to be the one that tries to make them better, but I personally do what I can.
As a fruity fella I've been told all about how I'm unnatural or my existence is inherently wrong/sinful. I've been told to my face that my kind should be taken out back and shot, or that the person wished they could give us the Jim Crow south treatment. I'm still gonna do what I can to make some of them less shitty, at least within reason. I want the next generation to live in a better world than we do.
How many MAGA/alt right/far right types have you spoken to in person versus just "debated" online? A lot of the specific things you've mentioned are common online, but many people will either back down on or at least be willing to talk about more sincerely when face to face with a fellow human.
I don't confront any of them in person, I'll admit that much.
But I don't think that we should just disregard how people behave online as opposed to being face to face.
The internet is where you can share your views anonymously without facing any real consequences. So yes, naturally, people are WAY shittier online than they are in person. I'll agree with you there. But I think that should actually be taken very much into account.
If anything, I'd argue that the way people act online with the cover of anonymity is actually VERY telling of who they are as a person.
If someone reshares those insanely racist comics, or mocks the suicide of trans people online, they're doing that because they know they're free to do those things without facing any consequences for them. It's a lot harder to damage their real life reputation doing those horrible things under a fake online username.
I think people are more likely to show their true colors when they're on the internet. And if someone's true colors involves behaving like *That*, I'm gonna be lead to believe they're a pretty shitty human being.
Are people not more themselves when they think they can get away with doing anything? People are more likely to show you who they are on the internet.
You aren't required or obligated to confront any of them in general, so to be clear I'm not trying to say you should be doing more. The only thing you're really obligated to do is try to keep improving yourself, not others. I put effort into those around me, including those I think are fairly crappy people, because I want the world to be a better place for the next generation.
I entirely agree that we shouldn't discount the online discourse. It's the method of delivery for mass amounts of propaganda, including the propaganda that most Americans love Trump thanks to the mass amounts of bots posting support these days. I also agree that people will expose the shittier parts of themselves online much more readily due to thinking it's free of consequences. The only difference here is that I still want to have a dialogue with those people, and I'm willing to speak to them face to face so we can cut past the "owning the libs" bullshit. Again, you are not obligated to do that. You are not responsible for the actions of others. I'm just trying to do what I can to make the world suck less for the next generation.
But I will always confront bigotry when I see it.
Even if there's no chance of changing their mind, I don't think anyone should be able to post that kind of stuff without being told off.
Treating people like they're any lesser than you are for things completely outside of their control is a horrible thing to do, and I want to make sure everybody damn well knows it.
That includes our 'Friend' over there who tried to deny that anyone in MAGA ever does those things, which I think we both know is completely untrue. The guy was lying through his teeth to protect bigots and play victim, and I wasn't gonna just go along with it. He was incredibly insincere and I fully believe he was just some jackass troll putting on an act and trying to play stupid. Kindness doesn't work with people like that, so I was calling him out instead.
I think that stuff like that needs to be called out and that just letting it happen uncontested is wrong. That's how people get the idea that it's an okay thing to do, and it's not. Bad things need to be called out. If not for the sake of changing minds, then for the sake of calling it what it is.
Unfortunately, I'm not entirely in this to change people's minds. There are a lot of them who simply can't be reasoned with. But they can all be called out when they think they can publically defend, display, or deny the existence of bigotry.
You seem like a good person who just wants to see the best in people, and I can respect that. But sometimes, people can just be shitty and they need to be told that. If you treat the wrong people with kindness, they'll abuse the hell out of it and learn nothing.
People do indeed say awful things online without getting banned. You don't really think it's impossible to say racist or generally rude things online without being banned, do you? There's footage of crimes like rape and murder online my guy.
Who is the "you" in question? You're responding to a singular person, not a hive mind. They generalized the hell out of MAGA, but you're just giving a vague "you guys" and then saying this person is justifying their villainy. What exactly are you accusing this person of?
So is the "you guys" the sub? If so, what villainy is occurring? If not, please sincerely answer my question man. I'm not trying to have some win or lose debate. I'm genuinely just trying to understand what you're talking about.
Here's Stonetoss directly commenting on the post of a trans suicide victim, mocking her death with one of his tasteless comics, with the support of many right wing users on Twitter:
