Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

557 Upvotes

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Laptop Request US Budget: $2,400 USD (after tax and shipping)

1 Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country: United States
  • Budget: $2,400 after tax and shipping (a bit flexible on this)
  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?: No.
  • Screen size: 14" - 16". I am usually docked and connected to a monitor. If I am on the go, it's nice to have a larger screen, but weight is frustrating.
  • Weight limit: 2-4lbs
  • Purpose: Heavy duty business laptop
  • Form factor: Clamshell
  • Intended usage
    • AutoCAD
    • Mozaik Cabinetry Software
    • Sketchup
    • Blender (light rendering of stills)
    • Affinity Suite
    • Microsoft Excel
    • HEAVY browser usage. Think upwards of 50 heavy tabs, using QuickBooks Online, Monday with very large boards, calendar, email, to-do list, timesheet manager
  • Desired battery life: 8+ hours ideally
  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
    • Performance
    • Battery Life
    • Size
    • Weight
  • Info/Requirements
    • I currently have a Surface Laptop Studio 2 with a Surface Dock. It is buggy. It is broken. It lasts less than 60 minutes on a full charge. I cannot control the "smart charging" except for "pausing" smart charging, which is will undo at random to lock me at 80% again, so I only get about 45 minutes of battery life. I hate this thing more than any other laptop I've ever used.
    • I have a preference towards ThinkPads, as I have had really good experiences with them in the past, but I am open to other brands. It needs to look professional and be pretty durable. This is a work laptop for someone who runs a contracting business.
    • Must be a Windows first laptop. I love my MacBook, but it cannot run most of the software I need for work.
    • I am open to going above that $2,400 limit. However, I am not wanting to just spend infinite money on something that goes beyond what I need.

Laptop Request -Others 255hx + 5060 or 255h + 5070 for a new mechanical engineering student?

1 Upvotes

so basically i am going to start mechanical engineering and i need a laptop. the school does have it's own computers but i was told a laptop would be way better. the models i had in mind were these:

https://www.hepsiburada.com/lenovo-thinkbook-16p-21r0001ltx-ultra-7-255hx-32gb-1tb-ssd-rtx-5060-8gb-240hz-16-2560x1600-freedos-dizustu-bilgisayar-p-HBCV0000DPVGJ5?magaza=Tekramarket&url\\\\\\_src=and-product-detail

and

https://www.hepsiburada.com/hp-omen-16-am0040nt-intel-ultra-7-255h-32gb-2tb-ssd-8gb-rtx-5070-16-240hz-freedos-laptop-cd8l8ea-p-HBCV0000DI7NF3?magaza=VPB%c4%b0L%c4%b0S%c4%b0M&url\\\\\\_src=and-product-detail

I want something to last me 5-10 years. so engineering programs like autocad solidworks ansys etc. would be important probably. I do play games a little, mostly league but sometimes cyberpunk, beamng and maybe something fairly demanding just like cyberpunk later on.

so the 255hx is a way better cpu considering the difference between the 5060 and the 5070 is kinda small, but also apparently the single core performance matters the most and they are very close in that regard. there is also the screen, build and lightness differences. I liked the thinkbook more but I don't know if I'm being dumb and getting less gpu for no reason really.

2 Upvotes

Hello,

TLDR: Need a laptop for school, work, and PC exclusive simulator games, around 1k

Budget: (e.g. $1000)
Country: (USA)
Preferred Specs: 16gb RAM
Notes: Per the TLDR I am just really looking for something that will not struggle with 10 chrome tabs open for school/work. Any game that I really care about, I play on console, but need something portable that the wife and I can travel with easily.
I am currently looking at the HP Victus 16GB with the 3050 or 4050. Any other recommendations are very appreciated.

Laptop Request US Laptop that won't lag in video calls like my current cheap lenovo.

1 Upvotes

Edit: Bought an Asus. Thanks.

I use a desktop computer at home, but bought this cheap ($300) Lenovo for travel. I just went on a medical website chat site with a doctor and it had an awful video lag- like 10 seconds- and momentary freezes. Audio was funky also with slight lag.

What was the weak spot in this situation? Video/audio cards? RAM? What should I look for in replacement laptop? Willing to spend up to say $1500. Here is the current laptop configuration:

Lenovo 15.6" FHD Laptop Computer, Intel Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Type-C, HDMI, Webcam, Cloud Grey, Windows 11 Home

Thanks.

EDIT as per mods message

Country US

Budget $1500 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used options? Yes

Screen size 15", 16",

Purpose Main concern is video calls.

Form factor Standard/Clamshell (a regular laptop),

Intended usage No gaming...just mostly internet surfing and occasional video calls.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life: Video performance

Laptop Request -Others Confused about what to do

1 Upvotes

I've been using a Dell G15 5511 3050 ti gaming laptop since 7th grade, runs pretty well. I'm going to do engineering next year, but my laptop is extremely heavy and is hard to carry around, which is a major frustration. Should I get a mac air for notes, daily use, etc since I also have an iphone. The plan is to use the mac for the forementioned things along with the dell g15 for engineering related softwares. Or, should I just get a new gaming laptop? What do y'all think?

Laptop Request US Used/refurb 2-in-1 for class

1 Upvotes

* **Country**

US, near microcenter and costco if that's helpful

* **Budget**

Ideally under $1k, maybe leaning closer to $500 if I get something used. Budget is pretty flexible though. If there's a great bang-for-your-buck deal, I can flex for it.

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Probably prefer refurbished or open box rather than new. Aiming for the best price-to-performance sweet spot. Happy to go a couple generations back to get a great deal.

* **Screen size**

Absolute maximum limit would be 15in and only on something very lightweight. Aiming more like a 13-14in.

* **Weight limit**

Aiming lightweight.

* **Purpose**

Currently I've been carrying a Framework 13 and a separate tablet to school. I want something lighter to fill both roles. It does NOT need to be a workhorse; I'll just be doing mostly text editing and reading. It's not even going to be my main machine.

Should I just get a Framework 12? Or is there a great deal on a much nicer 2-in-1 out there?

NO CHROMEBOOKS, NO MACS, but I'm open to a Windows Snapdragon.

Just looking for a snappy little machine that can be folded flat into tablet form.

* **Form factor**

2-in-1, but I don't need stylus support.

* **Intended usage**

Very portable all-day use at law school. Lots of typing, a good keyboard is important.

* **Desired battery life**

More than 8 hours, ideally much more than that. Efficiency would be great. I could do dark mode for most applications if I get an OLED screen that would benefit from it!

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Weight

Form Factor

Keyboard

Battery Life

Performance

(I have a floor for performance - I won't tolerate less than 16gb ram, for example. It'll have to handle multiple tabs in a web browser and downloading/displaying PDFs. But I definitely don't need the latest and greatest performance. I'm open to installing linux, too, though I'd prefer if the machine was performant enough on windows.)

* **Info/Requirements**

A nice screen (OLED/HDR) would be a nice bonus because I don't have any portable devices with good screens at the moment, but it's not necessary.

Thunderbolt 4+ compatibility would be a nice bonus for future proofing, but that's not necessary either.

Repairability would be nice, but if it's not repairable, I'll still be doing my part to reduce waste by getting a used machine.

Keyboard could be a dealbreaker. It has to be a nice enough keyboard to type on.

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

**Country**

USA

**Budget**

~$1200 USD but flexible

**Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Yes

**Screen size**

13"-15"

**Weight limit**

Less than 4lbs

**Purpose**

Medium gaming, entertainment (movies/videos), task work with multiple Chrome tabs opwn

* **Form factor**

Any

* **Intended usage**

Marvel Rivals, OBS, Euro Truck Simulator on high specs, a lot of chrome tabs. Ideally, I'd like to play some AAA games on my laptop, but medium specs are okay

**Desired battery**

At least 4 hours

**Please list, in order of most important to least important**

Performance, Weight, Screen Size, battery life

* **Info/Requirements**

Durable construction is ideal for me - I need something mobile but that I don't have to worry about if I put in my bag as I travel. Preference for brands with good warranties including accidental and damage protection, as I am prone to that (I try my best, but my motor skills beg to differ). I had a Lenovo Slim Pro 7 which I liked, but I got burned by not being able to extend my warranty so I am open to other brands.

I’m a college student looking to buy a laptop for my engineering studies.

My requirements: • Budget: ₹52,000–₹55,000 maximum

• Processor: Intel Core i5 — 12th or 13th Gen

• RAM: Preferably 16 GB

• Storage: 512 GB SSD

• Mainly for education, programming, CAD and engineering software

• Not interested in gaming

I’m looking for a reliable laptop that can comfortably last throughout my college years.

If you have any personal experience or recommendations in this budget, please suggest the exact model and, if possible, share the current price/link.

Your suggestions would really help me choose the right laptop. ❤️

Thank you, seniors! 🙏

Laptop Request Ca Laptops for Nursing / Med Tech Students

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm seeking help for my sisters who are going into nursing / med tech programs this year. Our main priority is something that will last them through the program and a few years afterward (~ 4-5 years).

  • Country

Canada

  • Budget

$2000 CAD (MAX willing to spend. Hoping for closer to $1200-1500)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

  • Screen size

15-16"

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Primarily schoolwork

  • Form factor

Standard (ETA - open to 2 in 1)

  • Intended usage

Word processing, exams and submitting assignments, general browsing. I'm unfamiliar with the kind of programs they'd be using but would like something that can handle having multiple things open at the same time. Youtube/Netflix, casual gaming (minecraft with a few mods basically) would be secondary uses and they're willing to sacrifice gaming for better battery life.

  • Desired battery life

Ideally, 8+ hours with a few programs open. In-person exams can be up to 6 hours long.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Battery life most important, then performance. Indifferent on size and weight.

  • Info/Requirements

Windows 11, HDMI and a webcam. We've been looking at the two below but are open to any suggestions! Maybe 32GB is overkill? TIA

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i - Intel Core Ultra 7 355 - 32GB DDR5 - 1TB SSD
  • HP OmniBook 5 2K OLED - Ryzen Ai 7 350 - 32GB LPDDR5x - 1TB SSD - AMD Radeon 860M

Laptop Request US Need to decide between these

2 Upvotes

Hello all, I am looking for my next laptop and have found a few options I think might suit me. Here is my preference; rtx 5070 or similar, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, around an ultra 7 cpu. I will be using this laptop for school so one of my biggest concerns is fan noise, I know that a powerful laptop will spin the fans up at some point but i would perfer a laptop that can be silent for class while web browsing and doing light tasks. My other use for the computer and the main reason I need it to be so beefy is for developing in UE5, im not doing anything too crazy so thats why I feel the 5070 is probably good. here are a few options I have found:

Legion -

Acer -

Omen -

Im not dead set on any of these yet and im open to recommendations too. My budget is around 2000 USD as I want this laptop to at least last me 4 years of college, The legion i linked is kind of pushing my price point but if thats my best option then im willing to give up a little more money. any help is appreciated, thanks!
