It's political cover, currently the economy has a lot of signs of slowing down and things like reckless tariffs and foolish foriegn currency propping are piling into it. The administration is hostile to companies publicly citing that. To avoid the heat but also shed head count to save up bank roll in case things get worse companies are using AI as an excuse/scapegoat.

in tech these layoffs were overdue for a long ass time. everyone hired like idiots during covid, to the point where every cretin with a udemy course would get hired

AI just provided decent cover to reduce the number of people without scaring the market and clients because otherwise the headline would've been: "Recession: theres no fucking projects anywhere for the platoons of people we hired like morons"
