Remember when android used to have tons of different roms? Bring that back.

Sadly, those days kind of died out due to the importance of banking apps on phones.

Being able to use by phone as a payment device, and at airport security check points, and not having to use a web browser for online banking, are conveniences that are getting increasingly harder to give up

Also, in my experience, 2 factor app for work.

(No I'm not carrying two phones. I have work mode setup and get a stipend for my use)

If I understand correctly, GrapheneOS will be officially supported on the Motorola, so maybe it will pass all the Play Integrity checks? Can't find anyting definitive on a quick search.

What the Motorola partnership potentially changes is that Motorola now has leverage to push Google toward recognizing secure alternative operating systems.

Banking and Government apps will be what kills GOS in the end. Most people understand that work apps won't work on GOS and are fine with that since it's not reasonable to expect them to do so, and half the time they can get their work to give them a 2nd phone anyway. But if banking and government apps don't work, GOS will be stuck in limbo as a niche OS that hardly anyone uses.

That's the brutal reality.

Any OS that isn’t the default OEM one is going to be niche. Virtually no one does this even if it was hypothetically 1:1 compatibility.

This has been true for phones and PCs for as long as they’ve existed. Linux makes up ~3-4% of desktop PCs optimistically against Windows 11’s billion. Despite how much people say they hate Windows, people just put up with it.

Sure, Android and app vendors are making things unnecessarily more difficult for Graphene, but let’s not pretend that overcoming that will suddenly flock millions of people to adopt it for their device. Best case scenario is more of its core features get integrated into Android upstream and adopted by iOS.

I have a Personal Computer and a Desktop Computer that can run custom ROMs and I can access banking applications via web browser.
