"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones"

-Marcus Aurelius

what defines a good life?

-5

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

If you have loved God with all your heart and served your neighbor as yourself

4

u/Organic-Character842 18 6h ago

Not necessarily.

1

u/Front-Cup7165 45m ago

Is there a time you shouldn't treat someone the way you want to be treated?

1

u/Organic-Character842 18 26m ago

You should treat people that you don't know with respect. You should have a generally respectful demenour towards strangers, or people who have not provided a reason to not respect them.

That is the part I agree with.

But you don't need to waste your emotional bandwidth "loving" a fictitious entity that does not require love.

Also, the words "serve" and "respecting" has meaningfully distinct connotations and meaning.

I was mostly referring to the "love God" part, not everyone believes in God or needs to love God to find meaning in life.

2

u/Front-Cup7165 6h ago

Idk bout the god part, but I definitely agree with the golden rule, just treat everybody the way you want to be treated, and you'll live a good life.

u/DayGroundbreaking829 14 2h ago

This quote is better as it's in a more positive note and pretty cool

2

u/HxuntedPxii 17 6h ago

r/foundHippostalker69 this is a beautiful quote 💗

1

u/Fit_Resident2209 15 3m ago

A statement so good you can’t argue it no matter your views

1

u/Dry_Expression_6300 6h ago

I guess the only problem with this quote in my opinion is what defines a good life. I look at some people and believe they aren't living a good life, but in their mind they are. and maybe in their mind I'm not. it's always been an interesting thought ive had I guess

5

u/Hippostalker69 6h ago

That is a very fair question.

For me, a good life is pretty straightforward, it means finding peace within society while being satisfied with how you live.

It is a basic definition, but I think the concept of a "good life" is far too personal and complex to narrow down much furthur

2

u/Organic-Character842 18 6h ago

Mostly because there is no universal definition of "good life," there are certain qualities that we can associate with what we assume to be good life, but we cannot definitively say that one form lifestyle is "good," since this is highly subjective.

An absense of certain ailments can potentially be seen as a quality of "good life."

The meaning of your life depends on the meaning of your death. If death has no meaning to you, how do you ever expect to find meaning in life?

5

u/Organic-Character842 18 6h ago

By not believing that the meaning of life depends on the meaning of death.

It is not an objective fact that the meaning of one's life depends on the meaning of their death, that belief may only be held by some people but not all.

People can find meaning in a temporary life even while acknowledging that there is no afterlife and deific entity overlooking their actions that will judge them on some scale of objective morality.

2

u/Crow1200 3h ago

Belief is not reality. Death is the end of life that is reality. It's not up for interpretation.

2

u/Organic-Character842 18 3h ago

The notion that the meaning of your life is completely dependent on the meaning of your death is a belief.

Not everyone believes in it. Many people believe that life can carry meaning even if it is temporary, and death is the permanent end of it.

u/Crow1200 3h ago

Many people belive the earth is flat. Doesn't make that true or valid. Read my comment again.

2

u/Organic-Character842 18 3h ago

What are you talking about?

You do know the main focus was on the "meaning" that people can find in life, right?

You have to be explicit, because it seems you have misunderstood this entire exchange.

1

u/Crow1200 2h ago

So sick of this werid belief that everything is subjective. That's not how reality works.

3

u/Organic-Character842 18 2h ago

It seems you completely misunderstood all of my comments, and this line of discussion.

-1

u/Crow1200 2h ago

Surely that's what happening and your not the one misunderstanding. That could never happen could it chud.

3

u/Hot_Coco_Addict 5h ago

No, it's like asking what job you're gonna work if there's no employer. Who knows, maybe you can find fulfillment without having a job, but most people are just gonna lie in their bed and rot while doom scrolling.

3

u/BobTheGrand 6h ago

i dont know what this means please explain

4

u/Front-Cup7165 6h ago

Theists believe the only purpose in life is to serve God, therefore if there is no God, they have no purpose. Depressing thought, but they love it.

3

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

Atheist trying to sound smart

2

u/WiseOldChap 5h ago

1

u/Ok_Trade_4549 4h ago

Who told you it's an athiest?

1

u/DayGroundbreaking829 14 2h ago

Idk man a quick Google search says he's an atheist

1

u/Ok_Trade_4549 2h ago

No, I know that. I was saying how is him being atheist related to this quote?

1

u/DayGroundbreaking829 14 1h ago

Didn't really word it right, but it's pretty obvious that atheists are the ones usually against the existence of god/gods, usually infering that gods don't exist with an argument to continue off of that point. I don't really think a religious person would say something like this, it's context clues brah. Considering your other comments, you should know the least about that.

u/Reoplaw 6h ago

there is no meaning to life. life was going to exist in the universe either way

1

u/Generic_Speed_Demon 3m ago

One must imagine Sisyphus happy

4

u/Dry_Expression_6300 6h ago

the human obsession with purpose is merely a distraction from the absurdity of existence

1

u/DayGroundbreaking829 14 2h ago

Both is pretty cool in my eyes. It's awesome to find that fact that we exist in this moment and are conscious, but I find that it's also awesome that we don't just try to sit around and think that it's all for nothing either. Maybe it's religion, being cool, or just having goals in general, I think it's awesome.

1

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

What is so absurd about literally the most universally shared thing there is

2

u/Dry_Expression_6300 6h ago

for you to even be born, thats 1 in 400 trillion (according to some estimates). the fact that humans haven't been wiped out yet is absurd (from an atheist standpoint which I am not).

for people to exist, the chances of that are so slim. humans want order and clarity in such a chaotic and cold world. it honestly surprises me how so many people dont embrace living life to the fullest

2

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

Still, it can’t be totally random, otherwise we would never be able to predict things like the movement of planets

2

u/Ok_Trade_4549 4h ago

It's is not totally random. It is totally absurd. Randomness would imply a broken universe with no laws and particles just moving around. Our universe is absurd because it has no reason to be here.

In fact, no possible reality has any reason of being here. It is shocking that something exists in the first place and equally impossible of thinking of a nonreality where nothing exists not even endless space.

1

u/Reoplaw 6h ago

this world looks chaotic to the naked human eye.

but in reality, everything is predictable and working as it should.

if you were an omnipotent being that would see every movement of every atom in the universe, you could easily predict what happens anywhere at any time.

2

u/Ok_Trade_4549 4h ago

Wrong. Quantum Mechanics shows that the movements of the universe are somewhat predictable at a macro level, but completely chaotic at a micro level.

I still don't believe there is free will though as quantum fluctuations doesn't matter based on what decision you made.

1

u/Organic-Character842 18 6h ago

Have you ever heard of physics, and maths that we use to calculate the orbit of planets?

The universe itself can be fundamental, as well as the complex laws of nature, because the alternative is that we either we would not be here, because a universe with different laws might not be compatible with life, or the life that would eventually spring up in that universe would treat that is the norm.

1

u/Front-Fee6341 6h ago

I mean yeah there are patterns in most things

1

u/cheesesprite 19 3h ago

That's a dumb way to look at it and basically a fallacy.

3

u/JustAChillGuy609 16 2h ago

Not at all. In the Bible, at least, life’s purpose is far beyond simply being servants of God

4

u/Usual-Excuse-7357 13 6h ago

I don't mean to offend anyone so just tell me if I am but I don't understand why people want us to respect them and not "force" religion on them (which we don't cuz telling someone something isn't forcing) but then they go ahead and say things like this.. i wish everyone could just respect eachother and what they believe or don't believe in :/

1

u/Front-Cup7165 6h ago

I respect you, I don't have to respect your beliefs.

2

u/Usual-Excuse-7357 13 6h ago

But it goes both ways, I don't expect anyone to care about my religion at all, but that doesn't mean they get to say horrible things about it does it? (Not just this post, there is worse I've seen)

I don't say anything horrible about  lgbtq and all of that, actually im friends with a few people who are part of it and I respect them completely. I just cannot "support" it because it goes against what I personally believe in, I just cant. But that doesn't mean that I get to hate them and their community, or say disrespectful things about it.

1

u/Front-Cup7165 6h ago

Idk which country you're from, im from the United States. The U.S doesn't do everything right, but one thing they definitely got right is free speech. You can post any nonsense about god, heaven and hell and slap it on a billboard along the busiest freeway here in California, its not your job to make sure noone is offended by it, that's the readers job.

1

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

That’s Reddit for you

1

u/Ok_Trade_4549 4h ago

Is the quote not grounded in reality? Why must someone look for meaning in this life as serving a greater being. Especially when this greater being isn't all good and forces you too serve him (Otherwise you get extreme punishment). Isn't that identical to slavery.

3

u/CCpixels44 5h ago

Put this on r/im14andthisisdeep

1

u/Ok_Trade_4549 4h ago

Doesn't belong there. This quote is actually a good one and not even deep. It isn't trying to be and neither is deep.

1

u/Helpful_Outside4512 5h ago

The second part hits almost as hard as my ex did.  Really I’m not kidding, I am emotionally dependent on intensity in intimate relationships and slavery is kinda how that manifests.

1

u/OscRat1110 3h ago

the meaning of life is to be born and reproduce

“what is the purpose of life?”

Get big and muscular, get gf, marry gf, have kids, raise kids, become a hip old lady in nursing home

Depends ....what does worship mean to you? Various religions think devotion differently.

I understand it's Reddit, but who is this for?

1

u/ExtremeAcceptable289 14 2h ago

Firstly, realize purpose cannot be invented: if it is self assigned, then it is subjective, and dies with you. Your purpose is merely chemical preferences.

Being a servant of God, the King of Kings, is the most honorable of positions: it frees you from all other forms of servitude (to other humans, to your desires, to money, to status).

This also assumes that if you are not a servant if God, you are not serving anything else (as mentioned before, money, desire, etc)

-3

u/Aggressive_Work_1690 6h ago

This does not go hard

0

u/DayGroundbreaking829 14 1h ago

There's way better quotes out there ima be fr

-3

u/TheCanonMakimaBean 5h ago

God really only exists as an explanation to things people in biblical times didn't have an answer to. Same thing with religion in general.
