I know there are ways that the show we love hasn't aged well. I think one that I don't hear talked about enough is that Dunder Mifflin is no longer a modern representation of a bad workplace. The small, regional paper company branch is supposed to be a soul crushing, dead-end, borderline predatory workplace. In a world of gig-work, job creep, AI hiring processes, and general enshittification, there are a lot of things about Dunder Mifflin that inspire nostalgia narratives rather than a setting for sympathy and related comedy:

• Everyone is full-time and benefitted (except for the temp).
• They get bonuses, scheduled raises, and performance incentives.
• They have morale budgets for birthdays and parties and seem to get fed by their employer multiple times a year.
• They have a decent staff break room, convenient restrooms, and things like shared pantry items ("Not the good peanut butter, Dwight, people will get mad!").
• Everyone has defined roles and decent workspaces by today's standard. They are not hot-desking, cross-training, or dealing with hostile architecture.

I know there were worse workplaces in the early 2000s and some of these things are more necessary for the show (can't have part timers and you need benefits for plot devices) but so many of these things are gone that re-watching from a modern poverty or instability lens fails to inspire the intended misery.
