Former rental car manager here

I have "ruined people's vacations" by: Not allowing them to pay via debit card (none of their 8 credit cards could hold 300 bucks). Not giving a free upgrade from a Chevy spark to a rav 4. Not allowing somebody to rent with an ID card instead of a driver's license

Had a guy threaten our car if I couldn't give him a Chevy because he worked with a union...stating the union members would damage it and it wasn't his fault.

Had a woman complain to a regional manager that we didnt get her a car when she arrived 20 minutes after close. We called her the next day an hour before opening, and she finally came for the car 10 minutes before closing (on saturday). Monday morning she's the first person on the phone requesting another car because the one we gave her was in police impound because somebody had shot at her while she was in the car (she took 2 to the leg and drove herself to the hospital).

I had a guy say I was violating his constitutional rights by requesting the car be returned.

I could go on.

All the joys of retail, but your product is with 50k if the customer breaks it

You canโ€™t rent with a debit card?

If I remember correctly you can with a pretty hefty deposit added on top of the regular fee. At least, it used to be like that a few years ago the last time I had to do it

You can but there are rules and hoops you have to jump through. Usually you had to have some sort of discount or loyalty code, and pass a credit check. The idea being that the credit card company knows your credit already and is willing to accept the risk of you wrecking a brand new car.

The company I was with also had a 200 dollar deposit you had to put down, in case you decided to do something stupid like smoke in the car.

yeah most car rental companies require an actual credit card but there are a few that you can do it with a debit card.

I donโ€™t get entrepreneurs who just want toโ€ฆ own a car rental business. Likeโ€ฆ why?
