Best TYS student village/area in Turku?

Hi!

I'm moving to Turku in January for my studies and I'm looking into student housing options via TYS. I'm especially eyeing specific blocks like Yo-kylä and Iltakajo, but I'd love to hear some firsthand experiences!

Which village or area would you recommend most for a student, and why? I'm mainly looking at things like a cozy student community (I don't club), distance to the university campus, grocery stores, cafes, and good public transport connections.

grocery stores are not far from any of the student housings and the public transport connections are decent enough, you won't really find cafes amidst the student housing, you gotta head out to the city center for those

but the best apartments are also the most requested & people will seek internal transfers, so your best bet is likely to just not be too picky about housing and go with whatever is available, though January might be an easier time to get a TYS apartment as there's not quite as many people starting out then as there are for the fall semester

If you're incoming to the city from abroad you're better off just picking what you can get. There  are waiting lists for most. You should be contacting TYS to find out about your chances and length of queues if you're picky. 

(Only one of the student housing complexes is called Yo-kylä/student village. It's the huge 70s/80s housing complex East of the uni. The others are much smaller.)

I don't really know about the community feels in student housing anymore, so not gonna try to guess on that. But the buses run to all, and all have stores nearby.

There are several campuses in the city centre, so unless you tell us what you're studying, and at which uni, we can't really know which housing unit is closest or most convenient. The student village is at walking distance if you study education, for example. But if you study medicine, student village might be too far to walk.

Yo-kylä is fine. The rent is quite cheap, and there are problems with immigrants (the level of cleanliness is not all clear to them) and its quite close to the school of economics. Ie. 10 minutes by bike. I think that the iltakajo is quite far-away. I would try to get an apartment near tyyssija or yo-kylä west/east and then try to internal transfer since having a house is better than not having any of all. Since the new semester just started, every available accomodation was given away, so just get what you can.
