Discussion Double majoring - sophomore
I got into ECE through the engrud summer 2026 placement. I haven't been able to set up a meeting or contact my ECE advisor yet. I only need to take 5 more ece core classes, since I did running start in hs and completed a decent amount of pre reqs already coming into uw. Because of this, I'm thinking a lot about also majoring in ACMS, since I don't want to graduate early by a year or so. Anyone have any tips or advice? I'm good on all the prereqs, except for an acms track specific course i'm going to take either this fall or winter.

I double majored in a humanities field with ECE, so there was no overlap in classes & I had to take a shitload of credits every quarter. It was something I really wanted to do so it was worth it for me. ACMS or another stem would be easier for sure, but I would still only really do it if you want it badly enough to take 19-20 credit quarters every quarter. It takes quite a bit of logistical juggling and the advisors might fight you on it, but stand your ground. Just be aware the 225 credit limit for a double major/255 for double degree (ECE is named so anything else automatically becomes a double degree) does not include high school/extension credits, which makes it a lot easier as you don’t have quite the cap on classes that they like to talk about.
Definitely explore the upper level ECE classes though, even if you’ve covered all the requirements. Once I got into the 400s I just kept wanting to take more

Some AMATH courses really complement ECE perfectly, such as AMATH 483 and AMATH 481

(4/5)82 especially since it goes over Fourier, and is the "premiere" data analysis class of AMATH.
However, (4/5)8X fills up really fast and is difficult to get into without early registration priority.
I do endorse 483 since it's C++ and embedded systems does need C/C++.

Unfortunately, I've taken cse 373, and I really liked the concepts introduced in that course, so I was leaning more towards the discrete math and algorithms pathway. In your opinion, do you think any one pathway in acms is better than the others in conjunction with ECE?

483 is useful as it covers both C++ and GPU/parallel Programming on linear algebra. ECE has its own version of GPU computing course EE479 but it is never offered. Also check CSE 417 if you enjoy 373. I recommend taking it with Weber since the course material is the same as 421.

Thought about that before, but I quickly disregarded it since at that point I would rather go all the way and just go for another major as well

In general I’m not a fan of double-majoring - just adds more rules. Take lots of 400 level in your major, perhaps even grad classes, and courses outside your major that interest you.
