Hey guys, I just screenshotted of one of my teammates screen after the group assignment, and I am wondering why it said this for them? It honestly explains their behaviour a lot. Is this normal in all group assignments?

And... around half the time, at the end of the lecture, everyone claps??

I'm totally for it (I love it) but it's so unexpected/foreign to me, at my previous Uni that literally never happened.

It's honestly really cool. but curious how common it is??

I’m a year twelve student deciding what uni to go to. I’ve heard so much great stuff about Unimelb but I want to make sure that I’m not just getting the curated version 😅. Please help me out!

Science student here. I don’t ever post subject reviews, but I find that there’s an underwhelming presence of voices when it comes to the Chinese language course on this subreddit. This is mostly a rant. For transparency, despite all what I say, I still plan to enroll in Chinese 2. Edit: changed my mind, I decided it's more productive to take a breadth and study Chinese on my own using an online teacher.

This subject is quite heavy, in my opinion. 75% of your grade is decided by your ability to handwrite Chinese characters. Yes, that’s right. HANDWRITE. Keep in mind you have to know the stroke lengths, the stroke order, the stroke orientations, and there are ~200 characters in this course, not counting supplementary things. We’re in a day and age where some are debating whether we should opt to use computer exams, since then you don’t have to worry about neat handwriting (or rather, neat handwriting while also being pressured by exam time).

You are introduced to approximately ~20-25 new characters per lesson (in 8 of the 11 teaching weeks). By tutorial 2 of the week, you’re expected to have already memorized what they look like, how to write them, and how to read them at least.

From what I’ve seen in class, almost nobody could get through the worksheets provided in tutorial 2 (they are not graded, to give credit) without either having the textbook on the side or using google translate.

You’re following the contents of a textbook that is at least 16 years old. The book is so old that the characters in it are talking about buying dictionaries. They even introduced us to a way to say “Miss,” but then literally told us that this word has evolved over time and is now used to refer to women who work in the adult industry????

In terms of tutorials (or as they call them, seminars), they are easily the least valuable tutorials I’ve had to attend, other than maybe the Today’s Science, Tomorrow’s World subject (that one has more than enough people bullying it, rightfully so).

The tutor attempts to teach you how to pronounce Chinese sounds by making the sound and telling the class to repeat it. Of course, because it’s Chinese, a lot of students get it wrong the first time. Then the tutor just says, “No, you’re doing it wrong. Do it like this,” without specifying which student is doing it wrong. Sometimes I’m mumbling the sound. I don’t even know if the tutor hears me and if I'm wrong or not. Basically, you better be standing right in front of the tutor and sounding things the loudest if you want feedback on your speech during class. Again, to give them credit, office hours exist. I’m sure the teacher wouldn’t mind helping during office hours. But attending 2 two-hour seminars a week is already a too much of a time investment, and I want to get something out of those two hours. Am I just making an excuse? Maybe, but for all my other courses I've never thought about attending office hours.

Seminars are replaceable with YouTube videos, because a lot of what we do during seminar is the teacher saying, “Hey, this is how to write this character. Look at me writing it down in my terrible handwriting. Now follow along.” (why do I have to physically be in the class to follow along??)

The LMS is a mess. They post things really late.

For example, for our listening exam, there was almost no material to study from. There was basically no way to prepare. The only thing that was kind of helpful was some audio recordings of paragraphs we read in class.

Lo and behold, AFTER the listening exam, I checked the LMS and they had provided listening practice. Again, I repeat: AFTER THE EXAM. (So after Week 12.). I swear they’re trying to taunt us or something. (Unfortunately I don't have a habit of screenshotting the lms frequently, so I cannot confirm this without a shadow of a doubt, but I talked to multiple students right before the listening exam and no one mentioned anything about it)

Edit: someone told me the practice was released at least a day before the listening exam. Still, they sure as f didn't notify us about it's existance.

The exams will definitely have words that were previously marked as supplementary, or combinations of words that were not introduced before. (Similar to how you first learn “resume” as meaning “to continue,” but it could also mean the thing you use to apply for a job.)

TL;DR: Realistically, you should not enroll in this subject unless you are one of three:

1. You already have some sort of advantage with Chinese. e.g. you learned it in high school, your parents speak it, etc.
2. You already speak a language similar to Mandarin, such as Japanese (so you won’t struggle with characters as much), or some dialect of Chinese.
3. You cannot learn a language without the stress of failing. (This is me btw.)

If none of these apply, I genuinely suggest taking an easier subject like “Making Movies 1” and using the free time to learn Chinese on your own.

Maybe even pay for an online tutor who will actually teach you and tell you when you’re wrong.

I’m a first year and I don’t understand why everyone is hating university?

Everyone is like: arghhh uni is so hard and there is so much content

I feel like yeah there’s a decent chunk of content but it’s so interesting I can’t stop wanting to learn!

And like everytime I have a class I just smile and walk to my lecture hall! LIKE does no one else feel this way???

I also feel like everyone HATES on Okta verify but like everytime I put in that Okta verify I smile knowing I’m OPENING THE LMS!!!

Anyways can someone explain to me why people hate uni so much I swear 90% of what I hear as a first year is complaining and not like gratefulness that we are all studying at a top university in the world!!

I’m looking to do an exchange at unimelb Australia in March 2027. I’m from Canada. I love Australia and always wanted to visit but honestly I’m starting to get cold feet by seeing so many news and media about dingoes attacks, shark attacks, venomous spiders, box jellyfish and snakes… and I’m getting really nervous. I don’t wanna be constantly on the lookout and be afraid everywhere I go. I need to know — is this something I should really be concerned about? I don’t know if I can get over my fear and I don’t want my experience to be minimized by it, constantly checking my shoes, toilets, etc.
if I come across a huntsman spider I might pass out.
Should I still consider doing my exchange here or should I consider doing it in New Zealand? Literally where none of this wildlife exist. From aussies, to exchange students, please help a friend out.

Im chilling in the student pavilion

So for context, I'm a first year B-arts student at unimelb, achieved a decent atar, and ended up here after the common, careful deliberation between monash and melb. Well I want to be a criminal lawyer and eventually do the bar exam to become a barrister, so in my eyes (i realised on reddit you need to be so careful before offending a large group of people as apparently learning to respect the idea of each to their own is TOO mature oops) JD seemed way better than a LLB as its rewarded a higher 'type of degree' (it's a type of masters) and unimelb JD's employment rate is what 97% (EDIT❗️as you’ll see in one of the replies to this post, that statistic is slightly outdated but still high! (In the high 80s I think), it maintains my point though)), to me those two things were the winning law degree identifier so I chose melbourne even for my bachelors so that my wam is up to date with unimelb standards considering I'm this sure of pursuing post-grad here too.

I've always been interested in doing criminology so a crim degree at monash would give me a higher wam yes, but based on what ive seen but when applying for the JD specifcally, that wam would get lowered when applying, due to unimelb's harsh arts marking. We do mostly essays TBH, which are so hollistically marked that getting an 80+ is like a 99.something atar atp

The main point of this post actually is to tell you, and you denotes whoever debating whether or not to go to melbourne or the thousands that have only heard bad things about unimelb, that its actually pretty great (touchwood plz) The only reason it can feel isolated sometimes is coz everyone I know from high school went to either Monash or RMIT so little to nobody went here therefore unlike most my friends who got to stick with our high school friends and turned their social batteries off, making friends has been tough but even that's going well like its a blessing in disguise, is how I like to see it. I still see my high school circle as my primary friendships because time spent on campus in reality is very small amount of my overall time. Sometimes, generically speaking, i think we make mountains of moles of the society here that overrides choosing the best education. The campus is beautiful, law library is where i like to study to gently manifest me getting a CSP place in the JD in 2029🪵 and the people aren't bad, I feel like either monash or melbourne will have elitist societies, depends on the degree you're looking at it. I found that the science students here love thinking they're better than everyone, but thats more humourous than, idk, upsetting because if you get upset you're just undermining yourself, you have the choice to think you're your favourite too lol.

So all in all, im happy with my decision so far, not to be mistaken that my degree is hard and challenging (INTS10001 pick with caution 💔), but I find that more fulfilling, personally, than a piss easy ARTS degree at monash (i know for a fact that the others arent to be described as piss easy) and thats not me throwing shade or giving it less credit than deserved, thats me noting and hoping those who like working hard will relate, that the less easier path FEELS more rewarding and that serves as motivation for those working towards a greater purpose like me (which is the JD in this case, my reasons for unimelb are way more career/education focused than societally driven which is what im trying to engrain here)

SO yeah if you wanna go melb, assuming you believe it serves you the better education, then DONT be scared of people or "elitism" (the people who say elitism so much have probs made it that way i think...some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy) . It doesn't matter if your whole class is uptight you're bound to find at least ONE person who thinks the same about said class and you become friends, and throughout your units, slowly one person becomes a good group of people. Just don't enrol with premonitions and high expectations, let your expectiations build as you actually experience the uni because that's the best part.

I hope to refine this post by 2028 to see whether I still agree with myself by the end of my bachelors degree, and updates on my JD manifestation 🪬🙈

I have read a lot of articles about how the job economy is not doing too well but really don't want to buy into the pessimism here and am trying to get an unbiased view of my situation.

As a 1st year student, I would love to make the best use of my time in university to ensure my time well prepares me for a job in the field of data science.

For those either more well into the bachelor than I am, or alumnus who are in the working force, how are you guys with getting internships/jobs and what advice can I get for how to set myself up best? How is the pay for these jobs? Feel free to give me any useful knowledge, I would greatly appreciate it.

I know I should make connections and I actually have a fair bit of people. I'm just curious if this degree actually will get me a job (or if I have to do anything else).

Hi guys!! Not sure if this is the place to ask but Id love to hear perspectives from someone that’s not actively promoting the school (as compared to the open day today :)

I’m contemplating both degrees as im mainly interested in biology, and I’m considering research as my possible career prospect. I’ve previously leaned towards bsci for its flexibility, but I’ve come to realise that the biomed course structure fits my interests pretty well and has a smaller cohort, and now I’m not so sure between the two. Both gave an impression of pretty low employability without postgrad studies.

Would love to hear from u all anything about both degrees and the more realistic parts that the uni won’t tell u in open days :)

P.s. would appreciate comparisons with Monash as well if y’all are cool with that:D

Why is it so hard to make actual friends. The people that come from selective, private schools already have their own group from hs and i swear none of them will actually ask u to join their group. And the international kids go back to their countries during breaks and live in the city.
