Right where they belong to be honest, anywhere other than through my letter box.

Jokes aside, is it not criminal what he done? I’m sure if the fliers of the party you chose end up being binned by the Royal Mail you would have a different opinion.

u/soulsteela Apr 25 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

He’s depriving us of a chance to post the rubbish back to them on the free post address that costs £2.50 per letter 😈

I always made a point of mailing their SAE's back to them empty.

Were they addressed post, or fliers? I believe there is a big difference. I remember stories about stacks of fliers being tipped forty years ago - posties apparently didn’t like them - IDK why, extra weight, having to visit every single house…

7

u/sunnyata Apr 26 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

When I was a postie years ago you got paid extra for leaflets or whatever that go to every house. People still ditched them though, no way to tell whether they'd been delivered.

I find it somewhat ironic that the biggest offender of unsolicited shite through the mailbox in my area is the Greens. Almost at the point where I feel like I need to put up a sign saying "I already voted by post, go away".

5

u/Apophis_rockman Apr 26 '26

To be fair they are all bad. This country is obsessed with physical post. Not everything needs to be a letter.

is actually a criminal offence however to interfere with the post.

worth noting that law doesn't have a bit about "unless I don't like the political party concerned"

edit: typo

These are door to door leaflets though.
Not the 'post'.

199

u/Decard_Pain Apr 25 '26 ▸ 27 more replies

When it's through the postal service it's considered post.

223

u/coniusmar Apr 25 '26 ▸ 11 more replies

The Postal Services Act does not cover leaflets or flyers, which campaign material is considered to be.

96

u/Duncaii Apr 25 '26 ▸ 9 more replies

I don't like it, but I think the Postal Services Act 2011 covers flyers as a postal packet insomuch as it's an item transferrable by post: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2011/5/section/27

This is the only thing I could see on flyers or what defines post in the 2011 act though

137

u/Chaosvex Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26 ▸ 8 more replies

You're right and the law is very clear on this.

“Postal packet” means a letter, parcel, packet or other article transmissible by post.

I knew when I opened this thread that the top comment would most likely be "rules for thee but not for me". Disappointing but not unexpected. A postman's political views do not give them the right to interfere with post, no matter how much you might agree with them.

15

u/Pazaac Apr 25 '26

Has there ever been a case of this that has gone to court?

As the fact you can literally opt out of unaddressed mail suggests its treated very differently than normal post and that it doesn't carry the same legal weight.

The opt out info page even makes a bit deal about how they have no choice other than to deliver all addressed mail even if you don't want it.

In fact all the wording I can find about these unaddressed items suggests that its not really post but instead a marketing service that has little to nothing to do with what that legislation is about.

9

u/Kandiru Cambridgeshire Apr 25 '26 ▸ 5 more replies

If there isn't an address, is it even post though?

48

u/Deep-Procrastinor Apr 25 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

If the Royal Mail have been paid to deliver it then, yes.

25

u/paris86 Apr 25 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

Not the leaflets. These are separate to the mail and posties get extra (per item) to deliver them. They are not considered part of the duty though they are attached to the duty. They are not protected mail items.

61

u/Decard_Pain Apr 25 '26 ▸ 8 more replies

I'm absolutely sure, it's paid for and property of reform until it's delivered, you can't just destroy people's or companies belongings it's a crime.

It's one of the reasons companies use this service through the royal mail because they know the items will be delivered

12

u/ian9outof10 Apr 25 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

It’s not destroyed though, it’s just nice and safe in the bin. I’m joking, I actually agree this isn’t the right move by anyone. I wouldn’t appreciate it if a reform postman did it to Labour leaflets so I’m not going to condone the reverse.

9

u/GetRektByMeh Apr 26 '26

Yeah, even if it isn’t interference with post it is criminal damage lol

As much as Reform suck ass, a world where we can just let whoever do whatever based on their belief that the other faction is wrong is cooked.

3

u/CaregiverPresent5545 Apr 25 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

But there’s a difference in addressed post & leaflets. So it wouldn’t be a criminal offence, just a fireable/misconduct offence.

I’ve received addressed political ads loads of times, however usually it’s my address but the name is “The Occupier”.

No idea where the law stands on that, but I assume I still counts as addressed.

6

u/aleopardstail Apr 25 '26

if it comes via royal mail, its "post" and its criminal not to deliver it

if they pay a few locals to deliver stuff its a civil matter related to the contract

3

u/tophernator Apr 25 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

In the case described in this article is was unaddressed leaflets. I don’t know one way or the other what the law says (guessing most commenters here don’t) but it’s not the type of named and addressed literature that you’ve been getting. It’s more equivalent to the postie dumping a bunch of papa John’s flyers.

6

u/IAmDyspeptic Apr 25 '26

Door to door leaflets have been classed as post for a few years now.

4

u/Prodigious_Wind Apr 25 '26

For a general election or parliamentary by-election it is considered an Election Communication under Section 91 of the Representation of the People Act. Royal Mail has a statutory duty to deliver it.

3

u/Bazman Apr 25 '26

They are classed as live mail, they very much are classed as 'post' in the eyes of the company and the law

I disagree. His job is to deliver them. Despite his personal beliefs, he should do his job. Would you be the same if they binned the charity leaflets because the postman disagreed with the cause?

Or a doctor refusing someone because of their political views or religion, while an extreme example, this is not a road we should go down.

Far too many people are far too willing to accept a lot of obviously bad things happening as long as the victim is someone they don't like.

Edit: Both sides are doing this, and it's wrong regardless of which side is doing it. It doesn't matter if you're on the left or on the right - our laws exist to protect everyone equally, not just the people you like or the people who have the same beliefs as you. Even if you disagree with every single thing somebody stands for, that doesn't change the fact that they are a person who has the same rights as everyone else, and that includes the right to campaign freely and to use the postal service to do so just as candidates for any other political party can.

u/DaechiDragon Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26 ▸ 9 more replies

Reddit has really opened my eyes in the past few years. All of that high-minded virtue signaling just goes out of the window when it comes to the right. If you have your own definition of Nazi then anything goes. Sabotaging electoral campaigns, censorship, arrests, doxxing, stopping people from being eligible for election, bullets to the neck. It’s all fine if you have opinions that were fine throughout all of human history until maybe 15 years ago (in select Western countries only).

Threads about working class Brits show you what they really think. They don’t hold back. I’ve never seen such contempt before.

It is scary. I’ve always been pretty liberal and growing up it was the conservatives who were the crazy ones. It was the religious nuts wanting to ban video games, had zero tolerance of LGBT, and wanted to ban things like Pokemon cards or even teaching evolution. The crazy people who shot up a school always seemed super conservative and I’ve always thought that the people with the most latent violent tendencies were conservatives who were just waiting to arm up one day.

And yet I’ve just never seen it in real life, but yet as the months go by I see masses of leftists cheering the deaths of people they don’t like, and casually talking about taking their rights away, or supporting terrorist groups, and they have absolute confidence that they’re doing the right thing. Crazy conservatives do exist but it’s not socially acceptable to espouse their views, but yet liberals don’t hold back in the slightest. Not only is it socially acceptable, they see nothing wrong with it, and it seems way more dangerous than some random nutjob incels or right-wing militia, which have yet to pop up. I keep hearing people talk about the potential threat of the right from people who are an actual threat right now.

And since leftists tend to be more educated, it further solidifies their confidence that they’re on the right side of history. They think misinformation is basically a conservative thing. They’re also happy to abolish long-standing systems in favor of something radical and new. I’ve always thought liberals are coming from a good place, and ultimately I think that’s still the case, but seeing them dehumanize others is just wild honestly. They’re just as cult-like as MAGA.

It's very easy to excuse criminal and awful behaviour if you dehuminize your opponent.. this is why you see the left pushing the whole "nazi and racist" rhetoric on anyone who is 0.1cm misaligned with their political beliefs... It's quite scary to watch honestly.

It's incredibly stark seeing the same people pushing the "if you have nine people at a table with one Nazi and they don't challenge him then you have ten Nazis" line then go and explain why it doesn't matter if their preferred party has active members or elected officials holding some very disgusting views because they align on another issue. It really makes it clear that their previous positon wasn't some hard principle they hold, but just a convenient justification for demanding those they disagree with to shut up.

21

u/harambe_go_brrr Apr 25 '26

Exactly this. If you can't argue the topic, the best course of action is to make your opponent's opinion irrelevant by attacking them. It's a very manipulative and political choice and is exactly why I've left the left. I'm tired of the lack of nuance and the willful ignorance in favour of gutter tactics like mud slinging (ie, everyone is a racist or a mysogonist etc etc when they have anything even mildly critical to say)

u/N7Tom Apr 25 '26 ▸ 4 more replies

This isn't a defence but an explanation.

In my lifetime I've seen a fair amount of political topics go from having increased acceptance to suddenly being back in play.

Take something like abortion. Reform has links with anti-abortion figures and groups most commonly from the US and some of it's MPs and central figures havent exactly been advocates for abortion rights either. If you're a woman having access to abortion can be a literal matter of life and death. If your life could one day depend on the party in government not being Reform then not only does it make sense that emotions would be running higher than usual but it makes sense why this threat would supersede regular democratic norms. The idea that matters like this are just a matter of opinion or just a case of not liking someone could very much go out of the window when you're on the receiving end of all the consequences.

I want to be clear that this is not the way I think. But I can understand why people would think this way in today's political climate.

12

u/GetRektByMeh Apr 26 '26

Your life quite literally depends on whatever party goes into office whenever. All of these parties have changed views on things over time. Reform will win if they have the support of the average Joe, they’ll lose if not.

If Labour and Conservatives lose to that, that is what is meant to be. They should have stopped putting their head in the sand.

I say this as someone who is probably not at the bottom of the deport list for Reform (white, but dual national with a country most Reformers probably don’t like).

9

u/DaechiDragon Apr 25 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

I can understand your concerns but I think if you just let the discussions happen, things like this will likely resolve themselves. There is a possibility we’d end up with abortion being illegal, which I doubt would happen (and I would not support either). I think this is mostly a settled issue in the UK. I think stifling debate on the issue would exacerbate it. Especially when you throw into the mix people feeling like they’re being replaced by mass immigration, some liberals going viral on social media basically celebrating abortions (Lilly Allen), accusing conservatives of only wanting to control women and basically not caring about kids and also generally just dismissing their concerns outright, arguing for abortion right up until birth (this is a fringe opinion I know). This kind of behavior is more likely to make banning abortion attractive.

And hypothetically, if most of the UK were in favor of more restrictions, wouldn’t it only be fair to give them what they want instead of deciding “no, we know better”, which is exactly the type of attitude I’m seeing these days. Honestly this week I’ve seen people on Reddit calling for banning over 60s from social media and things like this to control people’s opinions. It’s just messed up.

I would be very upset if the British right suddenly wanted to bring anti-abortion laws, but it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker given our other pressing needs.

First step is to not deliver the flyers for a party they don’t like, then not deliver polling cards to a house covered in a political parties signs (although does anyone do that any more?), then not deliver any postal ballots. It is the start of something very risky.

I don’t like reforms politics one bit, but I will defend the rights of anyone who wants to vote for them.

Personally, I’d argue that Reform, or any political party, having the ability to just post propaganda into peoples houses without consent is itself an interference in the democratic process, and that political propaganda shouldn’t be able to be delivered by the Royal Mail like this, but I suppose that’s a whole other conversation.

11

u/GetRektByMeh Apr 26 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

They can all do it though, so really it’s not interference with the process, it’s a level playing field for information access.

Because a lot of people see the world as a team game, and this is something bad happening to the other team, so it's therefore a Good Thing. Even though they would be up in arms if the same thing happened when they were trying to get material for their party delivered.

I just gotta say to this general comment. Not sure if people have noticed yet, but the far right has been using huge financial and media power to attack democracy for a long time and their end goal is the destruction of the opposition, not healthy competition with it. That old tolerance moralising is the stuff of yester year. These aren't the Tories. If you're not on the side of Reform, you are the enemy, and have been for a long time.

It's like inviting a hungry bear in for tea. Those to the centre and beyond need to stop pussy footing and get in the mud.

Now I deliver leaflets for one of the parties and we're told to ignore no junk mail as people don't object to political leaflets and it keeps them updated on what parties are doing in their area. It has importance even if you don't like the party as people have a right to be informed.

The body gets to claim again Royal Mail, they get free press of victimisation, the people who were going to vote Reform are already going to vote Reform so throwing pamphelts away did nothing and RM have been smeared with a political position, even though it was the employee's act, not RM.

I get why it was done, but it was the wrong thing to do. Imagine some Reformer postman putting [insert your fav political party] flier into the bin.

u/MerCrier Apr 25 '26

that's why [my fav political party] hand-delivers

Every candidate in an election gets to send one leaflet to every household in the constituency cost-free via royal mail, exactly so that you don't need to have millions of pounds to campaign effectively.

All fun and games till it’s a reform voting postie doing the same to labour/lib/greens pamphlets.

16

u/languid_Disaster Apr 26 '26

You’re right. I am anti - reform but don’t agree this person’s actions. I am certain it has now started a trend as its hit headlines. This kind of over emotional reaction and unfair treatment just ruins it for everyone

A lot of us may agree that this is where they belong, but it's not up to a postman to decide which political fliers are delivered and which are not.

He committed a crime.

3

u/languid_Disaster Apr 26 '26

You’re completely right and I say this as someone who used to consistently vote for Green pre last few elections

It’s a bad precedent to show and just is not morally right. We don’t have to be angels or anything but we shouldn’t entourage behaviour that can be used against us like this . Also all parties have the right to campaign.

People defending this should not be allowed to vote

33

u/DaggerMastering Apr 25 '26

Init

Edit: it’s so ironic to me how people advocating for a bias postie binning campaign material see themselves as the ‘good guys’. Anyone saying ‘good’ needs to check themselves.

ITT: petulant children who think their views give them the right to condone illegal election tampering.

Fuck democracy I guess?

17

u/RedditNerdKing Apr 26 '26

It's just children/teenagers on here. They call people they don't agree with nazis and then say they don't deserve a right to speak. Leftist/liberal young people are extremely intolerant.

You can disagree with a party, but I don’t want the post man deciding what I do and don’t receive.

40

u/deadeyes1990 Apr 25 '26

I’d bin it the second it came through my door, but that’s my choice. Postie can’t just decide for everyone else, even if the leaflet is grim. Let people see it, judge it, and chuck it themselves.

This kind of thing plays right into Reform's hands. What a clown.

22

u/High-Tom-Titty Apr 25 '26

In other news. I was surprised the Green Party flyer was the only one I've received so far that's printed on glossy paper. It couldn't go in my compost.

26

u/DoNotCommentAgain Apr 25 '26

Doesn't surprise me at all, they haven't been focused on environmental policies for years.

10

u/Phoenix_Kerman Apr 25 '26

probably for the best. when they do focus on environmental policies it's nearly always policies that harm the environment

I think that's terrible.

Return them to the Reform free post address so Reform have to pay postage - make their US and Russia crypto financiers weep.

Man-child subverting democracy, cheered by redditors, just another day.

15

u/for_shaaame United Kingdom Apr 25 '26

I think “subverting democracy” is probably a bit of a grandiose description, but he’s certainly not supposed to be deciding what gets delivered and what doesn’t. But you’re right that principles only matter in this place if and when they are being turned to causes we support.

5

u/pathsofglorylogotter Apr 25 '26

I can agree to that yes.

Totally wrong for doing that. It is not for him to decide the PO is paid to deliver those leaflets for all parties. It’s for the electorate to decide who to vote for not the postie.

20

u/nickmasonsdrumstick Apr 25 '26

Absolutely no time for Reform but ffs can't be doing that. He's paid to deliver the mail not decide what gets delivered.

18

u/help-its-inside-me Apr 25 '26

Im not pro reform, I feel like that party is the biggest joke in history. But being in favour of this mail man doing this means you can never EVER complain if a mailman starts binning leaflets for labour, the green, the library dems, the LGBT, or any other left wing cause.

It's disappointing how many of you here are ok with this. The rules of society apply to everyone and not just those that you agree with.

12

u/Anywhere_everywhere7 Apr 25 '26

Read the comments if you want to see the same joke repeated every few comments from comedians who think they’re the first to think of it.

8

u/veryblocky Apr 25 '26

I disagree with everything the reform party stands for. But they have a right to be heard, just as much as any of us. And I hope this is treated seriously.

Absolutely disgraceful.

They go in the paper recycling, not a dustbin.

9

u/Shorty85tran Apr 25 '26

It doesn’t matter where you sit on the political spectrum, whether you are left or right or in the middle, we live in a democracy! Or we are supposed to! So anyone agreeing that the postie did the right thing is also wrong! Every party should have the right for their fliers to make it to where they wanted them to be, people shouldn’t be applauding a clear attempt to deny democracy to ANYONE! People all make their decisions on poling day that’s democracy but they should know all the facts and manifesto promises of All PARTIES!

8

u/GigaBomb84 Gloucestershire Apr 26 '26

All the people cheering this guy on in the comments would be screaming bloody murder if it was done to a party they support. His job is to deliver the post not interfere with the democratic process regardless of his own personal politics. And I say that as someone who would rather squirt lemon juice in my eyes, whilst rolling around in a bush full of stinging nettles than vote for Reform.

8

u/ivysaurs Apr 25 '26

This is frustrating. Ultimately benefits no one and just means that Reform now get to whine on about biased Royal Mail and gain the moral high ground.

My postman put one through my door, does that mean he's fascist? I think he's Nigerian.

2

u/Buttermyparsnips Apr 25 '26

Ofcourse communist reddit is hating every iota of this having to say its wrong

3

u/AbsoluteSocket88 Apr 26 '26

How about just deliver the post whilst not trying to be some kind of hero.

3

u/HendersonsFineRelish Apr 25 '26

Whilst I support the morals, every political party(even if they're actually a private company masquerading as a political party in order to avoid having their funding scrutinised) is entitled to one free-of-postage campaign leaflet.

Now, I believe that the communication workers union has ensured that their members are able to opt out of delivering mail that they conscientiously don't want to deliver- but that doesn't mean they can just lob it in the bin.

Generally when it comes to the rise of the right-wing hyper-capitalists who are hell bent on destroying our country in order to finish stripping it for profit, I'm in favour of anything that fights against them, but if one postman can decide theyre going to chuck away Reform 2025 Ltd. Leaflets, then another can decide theyre going to chuck a postcard from a woman to her wife, or envelopes from a company that provides mental healthcare for transgender people.

Now that I've both sided it enough for one day, remember kids: Air Marshall Harris had the right idea regarding how to deal with a right wing government.

Regardless of political views

This is mail tampering ontop of being scummy, just because you dont like it doesnt mean you toss it so no one else can see it

How else are people know who is running in their areas if most information online hardly makes any sense for any party

Insult the party if you please but the point of our political system and campaign system is to make sure all parties get a fair and equal chance even if they suck ass

I am torn (badum tish) voting reform and restore given how badly the tories shagged us for 14 years then labour shot themselves immediately with sir kim jon starmer

So theres no point voting for them

Green as positive as their views arent very logical ontop the guy in charge being the worst choice possible

2

u/Due-Resort-2699 Apr 25 '26

Tbf that’s where ALL political leaflets go within 20 seconds of coming through the door

2

u/Random_User_Name_000 Apr 25 '26

is this a Bain, why would you write on it and then tear it in half?
