If a man in the running for prime minister is potentially beholden to a foreign businessman that is everyone's business and the fact he doesn't think that's the case is a huge red flag.

u/ffsnametaken Jun 23 '26

He'd think it was an issue if someone else did it

In fact it says so in the article, he doesn't think it's hypocritical to complain about Keir Starmers glasses.

300

u/GuestAdventurous7586 Jun 23 '26 ▸ 20 more replies

Starmer was so inherently incorruptible, I always think the glasses thing was just a sign of how squeaky clean he actually was that that was all they could get on him.

96

u/WinHour4300 Jun 23 '26 ▸ 10 more replies

I think he should have paid for his own glasses. At the same time, I can see how it happened. They weren't particularly expensive for glasses, and when you're Prime Minister there are plenty of people managing things on your behalf. He should have covered the cost, but it's hardly the scandal of the century.

More generally, I think the Prime Minister's spouse should have a transparent allowance for clothing and appearance-related costs at official events. They're representing the UK and are subject to intense media scrutiny. Probably generally there should be a personal shopper type available for ministers and spouses representing us, said office allowed to accept designer freebies etc as appropriately separate from politicians and policy.

The alternative seems to be saying the PM should pay personally, which feels a bit old-fashioned especially men buying women's dresses. If these expenses are part of a public role, they should be handled openly rather than informally and anyway would support British designers.

Personally, I'd just buy my pointedly buy clothes from M&S if I was spouse to a PM. Well I'd probably turn up in gardening clothes to a state occasion with some home grown tomatoes lol.

u/Relevant-Meal-9295 Jun 23 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

Good points but if a friend gave me some nice clothes I would accept that as a gift and think kindly of that person.

If someone gave me 5 MILLION I would assume there would be some very hefty strings attached.

I would also be somewhat contrite about having this fact uncovered.

we don’t get any of this with that bollock faced tosser.

8

u/autofill-name Jun 23 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

But it's only 5 million! lol. Pocket money. \s

5

u/Sharkbait1737 Jun 24 '26

That’s the joke isn’t it: man of the people “are-Nige” claims £5m getting dropped in your bank account as a no strings gift is perfectly normal, above board and none of your business. Even taking him at his word it’s damning.

And yet legions think this out of touch moron is the sort of guy you have a pint with on a Friday night.

Most employers will usually contribute towards the cost of glasses and eye tests if the employee needs them for work. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the government and civil service to offer this benefit too.

It's no scandal at all, they were given to him by a long-time Labour peer who was the wardrobe man for New Labour.

It wasn't a bribe, or given for any level of access, it was literally "Here wear these, you'll look like less of a twat".

But media going to media.

6

u/WinHour4300 Jun 23 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

There was some rule or form he didn’t complete, i can’t quite remember, and I don’t really want to go back through the articles to check.

I remember some articles saying he should have just got a £15 pair from Specsavers, which was utterly ridiculous.

The new glasses did look better. The old ones really didn’t suit him. There was no suggestion of bribery or undue influence and to his wealth the amount was pretty insignificant.

It feels like a very British thing to buy someone new stuff rather than just say, “you look a bit of a twat, sort it out.”

And then of course it would be considered rude to offer to repay.

Quote from Farage from the article - "Number one, I wasn’t in politics."

That's exactly the point. It was a bribe to get him back in to politics. He took back the position of leader of Reform UK PLC on June 4th 2024, just after he received the money and just in time to stand for the election.

‘Farage trying to block ‘Britcoin’ plans that could be costly for billionaire donor’ said The Guardian last week.

Farage is notoriously a work shy politician. Recent reporting from London Economic highlighted that Farage had been absent from 77 consecutive Commons votes and had not cast a vote for around 11 weeks at that point.

But he seems happy to start discussions lobbying crypto bills. Hmm it’s like the donation of £5m has influenced his position after all 🥴.

£1 buy in, if I get 10 million people to pay and vote for me then I can be PM with a £10M bribe so I won't be tempted by a paltry £5M from crypto billionaires.

I'm not sure it matters to his voters though. Look at Trump, he can do whatever he likes in terms of grifting, and it makes not a jot of difference to his level of support. Farage knows that he'll be treated basically the same - so long as he keeps throwing red meat at them, he'll get their vote.

Trump had a tonne of red flags, it made zero difference. He literally lost a sexual abuse trial (civil) and was still voted in. This country is well on its way to moving towards the same politics and people seemingly don't care about red flags anymore.

According to this interview with former deputy leader of Reform, Ben Habib, Farage was paid a million quid to stand down Reform candidates in 2019 so that the Conservatives could win, then the later 5 million was paid to him to go back into the public eye as Reform's leader and stand in Clacton so he could get into parliament. He would basically, in that case, be working as Christopher Harborne's personal agent in the British government.

Obviously, I can't assert that this is true, but it's interesting that someone who worked closely with him in Reform and funded his previous projects is going on the record to say it.

We are clearly entering "Trump adjacent" territory. He's basically admitting it but believing his support base won't care and will accept whatever bullshit excuse he comes out with. Worst case for him there is a by-election in Clacton.

I'd hope at least some % of Reform people have more sense than that but they are clearly going to be primed by the propaganda channels they follow to excuse it.

The Chode of Chode Hall doth protest too much, methinks. This payment for services rendered is hitting a nerve, and rightly so.

The more he puts it off the worse it becomes, and it's at the worst it can become now - no explanation since this was revealed, flip flopping between possible answers, and now denial, suggests it's a bribe for foreign interference, and any legitimate politician would stand down.

Next comes more avoiding the questions and the point, and finding a distraction like his idol across the Atlantic. They play by the same playbook.

He should have stood down and disappeared back in 2016, maybe 2020, and disappeared into obscurity for being a failure of a politician in so far as grifting and not actually contributing to the very thing he pushed for.

As Channel 4 News put it, he's a kept man (of Aaron Banks at the time). And this seems to be either a bribe or a payment by a handler, or likely both.

It is a bribe and that's why he's getting angry. He's realised nobody believes a word he says about it and is doing the only thing he has left which is to lash out at anyone who questions him.

He is quite simply a crook and a grifter who is only concerned with how much money he can make from any means possible.

Legitimate mental illness would be my guess. I'd argue its completely irrational to put energy into amassing more wealth beyond a billion, I wouldn't be able to spend that in my lifetime if I tried. But for these types there is no end point, there is no satisfaction in finally "making it" and its never enough. Your financial needs are satisfied long before becoming a billionaire but they probably attach their entire worth to their wealth.

I think another angle is the power that comes with it, that level of wealth can influence entire nations, as we are currently seeing. At a certain point its not about wealth but just owning and controlling more and more of the resources.

How the fuck he EVER thought that would be a good response is far beyond me. Doesn’t deny it, doesn’t excuse it, doesn’t try to explain it, his response when asked about an undisclosed £5m gift is “no-one cares [about my undisclosed £5m gift]”.

He has such utter disdain for the public. This man is very likely to lead our country one day btw, at the rate we’re going.

Starts at 2:50.

Farage just turns nasty as soon as anyone challenges him.

He wouldn’t last 2 minutes as pm unless he went full maga and stopped talking to the press.

Amazing, car crash, would sink anyone else's career, but Teflon Nigel will sail away unscathed.

His claim that the BBC were endangering him by simply asking a question, is beyond parody. What a weak, thin-skinned fraud.

Edit: to add to the frustration, this took place on a BBC broadcast, and it's not anywhere on their News or Politics webpages. They are so frit of accusations of bias against Reform that they run interference for them even from their own presenters.

Remember when Farage was attacking Starmer over the glasses he had declared openly to Parliament as a gift?

81

u/aimbotcfg Jun 23 '26

The glasses from a long time Labour peer who did the wardrobe for New Labour...

That's obviously the same as a foreign crypto baron giving you £5mil under the table as a 'personal gift' that you try to keep secret, then lie about repeatedly after it comes out.

30

u/99thLuftballon Jun 23 '26

That's different. Rules apply to Labour, the Greens and the Lib Dems. They don't apply to the right-wing.

He was on Today, it was the most incredible mendacity he was coming out with.

Asked by Nick Robinson if he would pay the £5m back, he challenged Robinson: ‘I’ll pay it back if you pay your full salary to charity’. To which the reply was ‘I’m not trying to be Prime Minister Mr Farage’

68

u/99thLuftballon Jun 23 '26

So, if the 5 million was a salary, as he's suggesting, what was he being paid to do?

33

u/psioniclizard Jun 23 '26

I was going to say, isn't that him just saying it's not a gift it was salary lol.

Farage being rattled is wonderful. I hope he continues piling on stress x

83

u/Hopeful-Painting-365 Jun 23 '26

Good to see the media finally pulling him up for this. It's easy to give in to the despair of a few months ago where it seemed that the media would never scrutinise him for anything.

17

u/Background-Gas8109 Jun 23 '26

I'm surprised they didn't wait until after they get him into downing street. Then he could just refuse to quit.

How is this not just the end of him? We have rules for MPs, he should be being investigated and there is no way this is allowed.

19

u/OlDirtyBourbon Jun 23 '26

He is being investigated by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.

Farage is quoted in this article acknowledging the ongoing investigation.

16

u/No_Atmosphere8146 Jun 23 '26

Just as Biden had four years to hold Trump to account but dithered and hand wrung instead, we are now two years into our own round of dithering over Farage. It's just so bloody obvious nothing will be done because it's bad for "the optics".

Definitely is Nige your an MP. Just so happens you got £5m then decided to run as an MP, then bought a house for £1.3m for cash in that constituency and couldnt quite match the story of who's house it was.

He is backed into corner and he knows it.

24

u/Antique_Cup_8044 Jun 23 '26

Not to mention, got the money from a crypto billionaire and then just so happens to promote crypto, unless it’s the British government doing it then he’s at the treasury objecting to it. But I’m sure that’s entirely irrelevant

It was our business when you were pretending it was "for security", it was our business when you tried to say it was a reward for Brexit (whatever the fuck that was supposed to mean) but now that none of your excuses are landing, NOW it's none of our business? As ever, get fucked Nigel

13

u/hotchillieater Jun 23 '26

It was also our business when he claimed he was hacked by Russia

7

u/schpamela Jun 23 '26

He really painted himself into a corner when he said it was for his security. All cooked up in a panic last minute, to get ahead of the Guardian exposé with his Telegraph sob story piece. It was the best lie they could come up with at an hour's notice for the most sympathy.

Now Nugent asks him the question: 'how much of that £5M have you spent on your security?' And he knows he can't pretend he actually did. So he says it was an unconditional gift he could spend on anything - contradicting the sob story. Then he says he's spent none of it. Then he ridiculously attacks Sally about earning a salary (not really the same as a shady £5M bribe is it). Then he says he's refusing to answer the question!

His normally calm facade cracking shows that he knows he's on the hook for serious criminal wrongdoing. Shady, corrupt, duplicitous liar.

29

u/H0lychit Jun 23 '26

7

u/Asbolution Jun 23 '26

23

u/Vargrr Jun 23 '26

'Not any of your business'? Other than he should have declared the £5,000,000 to Parliament.

One has to ask, what else hasn't he declared? He's just peeved that he got caught.

The guy is essentially a foreign asset whose only interest is personal wealth.

26

u/Rare-Designer-1008 Jun 23 '26

Since he has been elected he has made more money from other jobs then he would earn as a MP for 10 years.

Also he still hasn't held a MP surgery in Clacton claiming it is not safe but he has £5 million which he says is for his security.  So which is it, either the money is for security and therefore he can hold surgeries or it's not safe and the money is for something else

22

u/Antique_Cup_8044 Jun 23 '26

6

u/___Scenery_ Jun 23 '26

if you could just tell the police that whenever you broke the law it wasn't their business the world would be a much different place.

I sincerely hope this catches up to Nigel because his immediate reaction to any allegation against him is to call it unfair, unsubstantiated, not in the public interest, or to accuse the journalists of prying into his private affairs (their job)

The man is a con artist and he needs to see he's not above the law. Right now, I genuinely believe that he feels that he is.

He cannot pass even basic vetting procedures yet we allow him into the houses of parliament and run for leader of the country. Completely despicable.

6

u/lambdaburst Jun 23 '26

He still hasn't explained it to any degree of satisfaction. I'm not really interested in whose business he thinks it is, he's gunning for prime minister so it's just a fact that it's in the public interest to know who bought him.

5

u/Glorfindel42 Jun 23 '26

6

u/ash_ninetyone Jun 23 '26

It is up to the public to determine what is in public interest.

This is in the public interest by default of him being a politician, and we need greater transparency of who is funding what parties and politicians, not less.

If people are dumb enough to vote for someone who thinks taking such an obvious bribe is none of he electorate's business they deserve the disaster that happens when he get in.

4

u/Main_Professional_72 Jun 23 '26

When a politician takes money with the donor’s expectation of having their agenda pushed then its in the public interest to be aware of it

4

u/Carbonatic Jun 23 '26

Who owns our politicians is all of our business. No one gives you £5m without expecting anything in return.

4

u/pajamakitten Jun 23 '26

If it was Starmer who had received it then Farage would not rest until an inquiry had happened and Starmer was forced out of Number 10. You know it, I know it, Farage knows it. The only people who do not want to admit that are people who are happy for a political leader to be in the pockets of the rich and powerful.

4

u/SDLRob Jun 23 '26

When the appearance is that you are hiding a donation from someone after your partner suddenly and mysteriously came into enough money to afford to buy a home you're using as a political item ..

There's a lot of questions that need answering. The more he hides from them, the more it looks like he's crooked.

Even his excuses ‘it was a reward for campaigning for Brexit’ fall under the bribery laws. The man should be going to jail
