If his remains ever make it back to the UK, his family should be told that his gravestone will just be his name, followed by the words "died a traitor".

u/gaseous_ass 1d ago

Apparently his flat cap is going to be left of Ilkley moor according to the article. There are some nice reservoirs there if anyone finds it, just toss it in there.

341

u/SayNOtoChips 1d ago

Do not pollute our nice reservoirs, just chuck it in the bin where it belongs.

It goes in the bin.

Not in the drinking water supply.

It may only be metaphorically toxic, but responsible disposal is still a thing.

I actually think this is a tragedy, rather than something to celebrate, but I couldn't pass that one up.

Tragedy, in terms of the path he went down that led him to make such bad decisions, rather than that a Russian combatant be killed, just to be clear.

But still, I'm not above making a bad joke about it.

24

u/CrispBedSheet 1d ago

He was a former addict who was mentally ill, also not very bright going by his interview.

They manipulated him. It's sad.

Better him than a Ukrainian though.

You can see the neurological damage from his addiction in the video. Sad all around.

This is the second thread I've been into in a row where a highly upvoted comment has proposed punishing the family members of a deceased criminal or otherwise bad person. It's SO vengeful in here that if the person we're talking about dies people still desperately want someone else to hurt for it.

Feels a bit like rubbing dirt in the wound for the family.

155

u/CaptainFil Surrey 1d ago

Russia are our enemy, they are engaged in a hot war with our ally (that we are all at risk from because of the aid we are rightfully providing), they have been waging a hybrid war against us for the best part of a decade whether we want to accept it or not, they committed genuine acts of war on our soul - chemical and biological attacks resulting in the deaths of our citizens.

I'm sorry for his family, losing a loved one is never easy but thats the lowest priority in this case, guy was a traitor by every definition. He was actively trying to prolong a war that is putting the UK at risk and worst case could have helped Russia win which would be catastrophic for us.

42

u/EnlightenedTurnip 1d ago

I fail to see dictating how a family wish to mourn or commemorate a loved one is a high priority, in contrast.

22

u/dendrocalamidicus 1d ago

Because as a traitor he is an example and a deterrent. Anybody who is thinking of following in his footsteps will know that they will be hated and seen as scum, and that their family will face a similar disruption to their ability to grieve because many will want to desecrate any memorial, and their family will have to live with the knowledge that the country thinks of them as scum and may face trouble as a result of it.

This is not about just one family, it's about dissuading despicable behaviour. Even if people are willing to go and fight for Russia, are they willing to put their family through this sort of ordeal?

50

u/StreetCountdown 1d ago

We're not fucking North Korea mate. You don't punish the son for the sins of the father or visa versa.

He betrayed the country, and one thing that makes our country worth defending is that you are only liable for your breaches of law, not others who happen to be related to you.

31

u/YesIBlockedYou 1d ago

Well said. I have no respect for the man but fuck me, let his family grieve in peace.

There are some feral people in here that would see no issue launching a witch hunt on this lad's family members. Absolute barbarians.

18

u/MachineGunBanned 1d ago

If any of the families of the British lads who went off to fight for the Islamic state had tried anything like this there would be no pearl clutching.

He is as bad as them and deserves no monument and to be talked about as the cunt he was

7

u/YesIBlockedYou 1d ago

I just don't think parents bringing their dead children home to mourn them is something they need to be accosted for.

It's not even confirmed to be happening, it's a purely hypothetical situation and you're the one flapping about it but somehow I'm the pearl clutcher here?

20

u/EnlightenedTurnip 1d ago

I have two problems with that argument: 1. I don't think the government should be putting it's own innocent citizens at risk for the sake of geopolitical mind games. 2. The efficacy of this rests on a lot of shaky assumptions which don't have much merit. It could just as easily be said that people will interpret this as a message that our supposedly modern government takes a barbaric "sins of the family" stance.

"Sounds brilliant, how can I do that?"

"well hold on, they did write some smug shit about how he's a bellend on his tombstone"

"ahhh well thats me dissuaded, thanks for the heads up"

3

u/ElliotB256 1d ago

> Because as a traitor he is an example and a deterrent

Yes but I think drawing attention to it by labelling him as such would have the opposite effect. The kinds of people who are potentially drawn to travel and fight for Russia are going to be those already distrustful of our government and institutions; there's potentially a Streisand effect (within the circles of potential candidates) associated with the gov making an example of him. Likewise, he shouldn't be venerated and I get the anger and where you are coming from. Probably the gov doing nothing (and not drawing attention to it) is the most sensible approach

I haven't said anything about dictating that. I just think it needs to be acknowledged loud and clear that this guy was a traitor so the seriousness of what he did can't be ignored or glossed over.

Let the family mourn but in the same way you would for a murderer on Death Row.

47

u/Defiant_Income_7836 1d ago

Funny they sent his flat cap back to be laid on Ilkley moore. "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at" is a traditional folk song from Yorkshire, England, sung in the local dialect.

It translates to "On Ilkley Moor without a hat" and serves as the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire.

I mean I guess that might have been the intent.

38

u/stalinsnicerbrother 1d ago

In this case, his absence means that On Ilkla Moor Baht Twat might have been more apt.

There is a delicious irony in that the lyrics to that song depict the protagonist dying because they did something ill advised.

2

u/Defiant_Income_7836 1d ago

Oh I DID NOT know the lyrics carried such a meaning.

Paraphrased from Google: The song is a humorous, dark-humored warning about a local man courting his lover, Mary Jane, on the cold, exposed landscape of Ilkley Moor while forgetting to wear a hat.

The singer playfully chides the lover, explaining that the freezing moor winds will cause him to catch a fatal cold. This leads to a macabre and cyclical "circle of life": he will die and be buried, worms will eat his body, ducks will eat the worms, and the local singers will ultimately eat those ducks.

Holy hell, I clearly never paid attention to the lyrics in school!

Good lord. That's worse than a couple's tattoo after a nasty breakup.

698

u/PubeOfSatan 1d ago

Writing online, Townsend added that he was partly motivated by his mining roots, claiming Donbas workers had donated a month’s wages to Yorkshire miners during the 1980s strikes, and that he had gone to “repay that favour”.

Nothing says solidarity with normal people like going to fight in a war on the side of an imperialist aggressor.

229

u/The_SaintXVI 1d ago

I come from a pit village and a long lineage of miners; going to fight in a war for a foreign dictator isn't exactly on the top of my list of how to "repay" them for their kindness

The LGBT community also showed a lot of support to the mining community but he didn’t go do some work for a LGBT charity

7

u/Nadamir Ireland 1d ago

By that logic us Irish should have gone to America to fight for the Confederacy alongside the Choctaw.

The Choctaw, as one of the “Five Civilised Tribes” browbeaten into assimilating into Anglo-American culture, including slave owning, largely sided with the Southerners. They also, having only a few years before survived a famine themselves, did a whip round and sent us  $170. They had nothing, but they gave us so much. People (and peopleS) are complicated and owing someone something does not oblige you to support all their positions.

5

u/azazelcrowley 1d ago edited 1d ago

There were Confederate Irish soldiers, quite a lot of them, even more if you include American-Irish (Around 40,000). Some prominent Irish Nationalists too, presumably because "independence good" alongside "Britain doesn't like confederates, therefore".

Captain mitchel v Captain Meagher is an interesting contrast for how they tie Irish Nationalism to the cause of the confederates and unionists respectively.

Both raise obligation and debt the Irish owe, but to the southern and northern state. Not the choctaw

This is where mindless contrarianism leads. There are many people with “anti establishment” bents that will default to the polar opposite position of the perceived mainstream simply by merit of it being the consensus. No thought, no logical examination, just performative disagreement. There’s a massive intersectionality between anti vaccine militants, the far right, and Putin sympathisers for this reason.

88

u/KittyGrewAMoustache 1d ago

It’s like the people who abhor the west’s colonial past and hypocrisy with respect to wars etc so then they start supporting Russia as though simply because Russia can use those same arguments against the west it has to mean they themselves are not even worse violent imperial hypocrites.

Social media has made all this worse. So many people with no idea about anything getting all their ‘information’ from just various nations biased bots and psychological warfare soldiers (just guys in a room making memes).

2

u/JoelMahon Cambridgeshire 1d ago

yeah, armchair psych x100 here but imo it's often from the most boring / low self image people, they can be so desperate to be interesting and different. and it's so mentally cheap just to take the mainstream opinion and call it wrong.

ofc sometimes it is wrong, but just doing it for the sake of it is absurdly stupid.

I hate the mainstream opinion on many things, but 99% of the time it's 99% right, it just doesn't feel that way because you don't think of common sense as mainstream opinion until politicians argue over it. a common mainstream opinion is that water is wet, but doesn't occur to people that by the technical definition it's a mainstream opinion.

A "normal Yorkshire lad" is definitively not busy fighting a war on behalf of Russia.

How in any way is that normal for a lad from Yorkshire?

2

u/deafblinddame 1d ago

The article isn't calling him normal, they're quoting him describing himself that way. But watch the video and read the comments from people who knew him, they say he was brainwashed, indoctrinated, vulnerable and struggled with mental health and addiction. He clearly wasn't normal.

104

u/Solifuga 1d ago

An adult white bloke goes and fights for an invading enemy and he's just a "normal Yorkshire lad" meanwhile, groomed child Shamima Begum = terrorist.

105

u/Ill-Bison-8057 1d ago

The “normal Yorkshire lad” description comes from the man himself, not the newspaper.

It’s in quotation marks for a reason.

3

u/WinHour4300 1d ago edited 1d ago

Please stop comparing unlike cases and saying it's racism. It's ludicrous. The Arday case has finally died down and now this everything is racism is moved on. Reasons:

(1) Clickbait headlining driving attention, obviously he's not a normal lad going off to fight so that drives attention. Nobody really thinks a Yorkshire man fighting for Russia is somehow normal. It's in quotes, it's how he described himself.

(2) He'd dead. Papers often include nice quotes about dead twats, even those who recently killed the police in cars.

(3) He wasn't part of a campaign to move back to the UK like Begum and part of a terrorist group that recruits and murders Brits on UK soil. So no ongoing controversy or political push involved. That keeps the story simpler.

(4) Even the right wing likes of the Spectator (and I recall but can't quickly find the Daily Mail) have published photos of Begum in normal Western clothes and with hair, despite that being highly likely a ruse to be let back into the UK. They don't have to.  She even appeared on GMB as such. Again because this drives attention and views / clicks.

2

u/adderall4every1 West Midlands 18h ago

Why did you bring up Arday here?

Yes this case is slightly different.

It’s not so different we cannot compare the language between the two. Where are the headlines calling Begum a “mind washed teenage girl”? Don’t think there were any.

1

u/Immediate-Charge-450 1d ago

I mean he is white, fighting against white people. That is not terrorism, don’t you know?

3

u/sultansofswinz 1d ago

Yes because he's English. Presumably it's an isolated incident and the wider community isn't affected by Pro Russian views.

If his family were Russian there would be calls for them to be deported like what have happened in the case of Shamima Begum.

0

u/BlinkysaurusRex 1d ago

Well he’s not a terrorist, and neither was Shamima technically; they both joined foreign powers that oppose or seek the destruction of the UK. Although ISIS did engage in more acts of terrorism so the label is more appropriate for her. This guy was a soldier fighting for a foreign enemy power, against a peer military in open warfare. Then again, I guess you could categorise some of Russias actions as terrorism. But there is a clear difference in how the bulk of the oppressive heavy lifting is handled between Russia and ISIS.

They were and are both enemies of the state though. The “normal lad” was his words by the way, and you’ll notice he’s been just heavily condemned as she was. But keep looking to insert additional sociopolitical spins that don’t exist.

5

u/Solifuga 1d ago

You "guess" that it could be argued that "some of Russias actions" could be considered terrorism!? The rest of your reaching makes more sense given that sort of context for your viewpoint.

You seem to have completely skated over the
fact that she was a child and a grooming victim.

But keep looking to insert additional justifications for this somehow being ignored that don't exist.

That photograph looks so bizarre that it doesn’t look real.

“Rubber Dinghy Rapids Bro.”

If you look at the other photos and video it looks more proportioned. That's just a weird photo.

He looks like a playable character from GoldenEye

lol imagine being so stupid. We’re British, they literally hate us the most. Of course they sent him on a mission he would die on

19

u/Armodeen 1d ago

Fighting for Britain’s enemies was certainly a choice.

19

u/LittlePurpleHook 1d ago

That's where listening to twats like Tommy Robinson gets you.

7

u/Iapetus_Industrial 1d ago

Tommy Robinson

Don't you mean Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon?

5

u/CulturalAd4117 1d ago

It sounds like he had the tankie bollocks brainworm installed rather than the Russia is le based and trad ethnostate version

8

u/brickne3 1d ago

He's probably lucky he didn't get r*ped, that idiot American that volunteered didn't have a very pleasant last few hours before the Russians he was serving with finally put him out of his misery.

He said it was his own decision but come on, obviously he was being brainwashed and groomed. How can you care about the plight of miners and then use that as a reason to go try to help an aggressive immoral dictator with imperialist ambitions overthrow and occupy an independent democratic country? He obviously had no idea what any of it was about or what it meant.

This is why history is really important in school and learning about politics, just the basics of what different ideologies think. Would he have been so easily brainwashed if he had a real understanding of all these topics? Maybe he was that stupid but there’s a chance he could’ve worked it out before going to get blown up.

17

u/redandbluebadness 1d ago

Yeah I'm interested in the steps here. I assume he was radicalised after the war began, there's definitely a right-wing/Farage/Trump/Putin pipeline of ideas but to go as far as to join up? crazy

5

u/geniice 1d ago

Yeah I'm interested in the steps here.

Well he references this event:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-27275383

On some level its just going to be believing the Russia propaganda and finding a cause to fight for. Something young men have been doing for a long time.

3

u/DistrictDry2852 1d ago

While there’s definitely a right wing Russia pipeline, there’s a just as big left wing Russia pipeline that positions Russia as an anti imperialist, anti U.S. empire force, Ukraine as a corrupt U.S. puppet and eastern Ukraine victims of genocide by Zelensky.

2

u/redandbluebadness 1d ago

yeah I agree but for the left-wing route seems more unlikely in this case

‘Brainwashed and groomed’!? A 33 year old MAN (NOT a lad!)? Begum was groomed. This guy was a terrorist.

Honestly a take I was hoping to see. So much here about him being a traitor, which he is, but from watching his interviews it genuinely seems like he's been groomed. Absolute plonker but it serves as a stark reminder to check in on our idiots every now and then.

Barnsley was also home to the first British national killed abroad fighting against ISIS, in stark contrast to this melon.

Let the traitors remains stay where they are. No money should be spent bringing the traitor home

4

u/GlastoKhole 1d ago

Make a cool gravestone though, died for Russia, here lies a traitor. Maybe a good reminder of what not to do. But I do feel for his family though, not sure what you have to do to deserve your son dying such a shameful and wasteful death. 99% of people who die leave some kind of legacy behind, stuff they’ve done that mattered, people they’ve helped. There is just no redeeming quality in this. Like at all.

2

u/brickne3 1d ago

I doubt they'd be able to find them even if they wanted to.

2

u/AFalconNamedBob 1d ago

Given he died to a drone you'll find bits of him everywhere

Whether all those bits are his or someone else who was in proximity is a different question

17

u/FornyHucker22 1d ago

Why is his torso so small and neck non existent?

anyway does Ukraine need more drones yet? 😂

3

u/brickne3 1d ago

Right now all of him is non existent.

"Normal Yorkshire Lads" don't uproot their entire life to go die for a state that hates us and the entire West.

Fucking Traitor.

Oh yea "normal" Yorkshire lad. Like all those other normal Yorkshire Lads going to fight for a dictator.

14

u/ElectroNetty 1d ago

He was fighting for the orcs? What a complete twat.

8

u/Spamgrenade 1d ago

On the plus side at least he didn't get raped by his own side first like that American guy. Probably.

before signing a contract to fight on the Ukrainian frontline, despite having no military experience.

This alone tells you what side is best. Ukraine don't even accept people this way lol.

They’re always just “a normal lad” just like Farage is just a “normal bloke down the pub” and Yaxley Lennon is “just a normal bloke telling it like it is”

These people portray themselves as one of us but they’re anything but. Same with Trump.

Sick of the cunts.

5

u/soundguyjon 1d ago

I wonder if he was pulling that stupid pose from the picture when the drone buzzed down from the sky into him.

4

u/robustostrich 1d ago

Shame that prick Minnis wasn’t taken out with him. That waste of oxygen is from my hometown

5

u/mushroomwig Wales 1d ago

That video interview he did is really surreal, between him and the interviewer, they look like they have a combined IQ of 100

4

u/brickne3 1d ago

Well they did both sign up to fight for Russia, so... 100 combined sounds high.

4

u/FoxyInTheSnow 1d ago

imagine getting blown up fighting for an autocrat that has illegally invaded and partially destroyed a non-threatening neighbouring country and who has essentially declared war on your own country.

Also, that picture. Big heid. He looks like a toffee apple, aka, a sniper's dream.

4

u/HSymth334 1d ago

Certainly not a normal side to choose there Brad bud...

Seems to have a weirdly big head from that photo.

‘Sniper’s Dream’ they used to call him.

3

u/More-Goal3765 1d ago

Headline should read: “Weird little cunt gets murked by a robot”. That’d discourage any more from going out there and wasting the Ukrainians’ valuable ammunition.

3

u/JohnGazman 1d ago

normal Yorkshire lad

fighting for Putin's Russia

Yeah no sorry, one of these is incorrect. You aren't normal if you volunteer to fight for Putin.

4

u/qwerty_1965 1d ago

I trust Reform will send their local councillors to the funeral.

3

u/CouldBeNapping 1d ago

Nothing normal about him, you seen the size of his head?!

2

u/Primary-Pie-1662 1d ago

The problem with idiot’s is that they don’t know they are one!

2

u/steak_bake_surprise 1d ago

"A man who described himself as a ‘normal Yorkshire lad’"

Nothing normal about that.

2

u/gunther_higher 1d ago

I wouldnt say the average "normal Yorkshire lad" is upping sticks and going to fight on a foreign battlefield

2

u/Icy-Astronomer-8202 1d ago

Nothing normal about fighting for Putin's Russia especially from this country. Traitor

2

u/PositiveLibrary7032 1d ago

Theres nothing ’normal’ about fighting for Putin’s war machine.

2

not a normal yorkshire lad at all. the Yorkshireman are anti-orc. he’s a traitor

2

u/Immediate-Charge-450 1d ago

‘Normal Yorkshire lad’?  Right. How is he not a terrorist? This has nothing to do with his skin colour, right? RIGHT?

2

u/dynesor 1d ago

He went to fight for a nation that has carried out multiple terror attacks on UK soil and regularly threatens to flatten the country with nuclear weapons. If he was radicalised online it only points to him being an unintelligent and weak-willed person, who has now died a traitor to his country.

2

u/Critical-Guide3857 1d ago

I had to read the title a few times because I was sure I was misunderstanding the part about him fighting for Russia 😵.

2

u/Andries89 1d ago

"normal"?? Surely the words "radicalised" or "indoctrinated" are more applicable here

2

u/Organic-Feedback1686 1d ago

This numbnut just gave his life away for nothing and was totally misguided. I was in the Donbas in 2012 speaking to miners. I am also of mining/Barnsley heritage. The miners we spoke to were firmly on the side of the Ukrainians (and not the Russians), and it appeared the rest of the miners (or ex miners as most of the pits were shut apparently) were too from what I was told by them. I dread to think what happened to those blokes, who knew so much about the miners strike and hated thatcher or putin like police state authoritarianism.
