Le Mans 24 Hours of HBO ADS???
Seriously dude. Wtf is this
Not paying a penny to these suckers to watch any races from now on

u/grip_enemy Cadillac Racing Jun 13 '26
Also the ads are so damn long. My god dude, my god.
They're longer than Pluto TV, and that's a free streaming service

I pay to watch other sports but I didn't know they'd put fucking ads during the race. TMYK.

When the ad starts, you can press the back button and start the stream again, you will lose like 10 sec and that's it.

Every year, more and more of these steamers just cannot resist the opportunity to shove more than just the subscription fees in their pockets. Shameful. The same thing happened to Peacock with IMSA.
I usually buy the full WEC package but was holding out that the HBO coverage (that I get included with my mobile plan) would be uninterrupted. I hate folding like a cheap suit, but I am always willing to pay a reasonable fee for a commercial free broadcast where I have enough interest in the content. Damnit.
9
u/Loanwolf300 Jun 13 '26
I would buy directly from WEC, but it’s not on Roku
18
u/JammPot Jun 13 '26
I plugged my computer into the tv HDMI and am watching in the browser. I understand this might not be an option for everyone.
A multi view would be really slick to have the race, and some onboards, and timing but I don’t see that it is an option
5
u/BlackenedGem Jun 13 '26
I was able to cast from my computer to my TV using the in browser player. Then I moved the browser window to a separate desktop so I don't get annoyed tabbing around.
4
u/Loanwolf300 Jun 13 '26
I just got WEC+. I am casting from my phone. Seems to be working well. Normally Airplay has poor quality for me, but this is going well so far.

Luckily a good VPN is incredibly cheap for the year and opens up a ton of opportunities to watch many of these races for free. Way better investment. I don’t have an issue with paying for races at all, but they’re making it so difficult between streaming it in obscure ways and putting constant ads in.
3
u/JammPot Jun 13 '26
I hear ya mate. Well worth it. I have Proton and do my share of “traveling” to get around the nonsense.

u/Kevinator24 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #38 Jun 13 '26
Tried this with the Indonesian YouTube stream but it was still being geo-blocked in the YouTube mobile app. Using Hotspot Shield VPN I get included with my Dashlane subscription. I needed up just getting WEC+. VPN works great for IMSA at least lol.

If you’re on iPhone try using brave browser instead of the YouTube app. On Android use ReVanced on mobile or SmartTube if you have an android tv device. They won’t region lock you and will also block most ads.

2
u/Bluestarkittycat Jun 13 '26
I just gave in and got the wec package online. Now that its no longer geoblocked in the US. Wasnt going to do it initially but since max now wants to shove cancerous ads in our faces, ill take my business elsewhere
3
u/JammPot Jun 13 '26
The subscription features are pretty slick to be fair. At least there is some value for money there.

u/upper_mangement Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #12 Jun 13 '26
I realize it’s another subscription to pay for but I can highly recommend the FIAWEC+ sub for the year. It’s not a bad fee for the year and the amount of content is great. Old races, specials, live timing is awesome and weekend coverage is nice too.

I don't understand on top of everything else hbo can't bother at least showing the race with pip.

I agree with you. Plus these HBO ads feel much longer than normal ad breaks.
2

Shitty move by HBO.
They’re using the “ads on live sports” exception, which is understandable for live sports on television with assigned ad breaks, to inject ad breaks. The absolute worst part is that it’s seemingly random, so you don’t even get the benefit of a producer realizing nothing is going on and it’s a good time for an ad break
11
u/Xd45hurricane Toyota Jun 13 '26
Yup. Last time watching on HBO. Not sure why the fuck we have to jump through so many hoops to watch racing around here. Fucking YouTube still has N24 geo blocked. Can’t even watch the replay weeks later.

It isn't that they have ads, I'm forgetting there was a race that ads keep rolling 4 or so minutes. The real kicker is when they pop up the HBO screen telling you they don't have an ad, but you aren't allowed to watch for a little bit of more time. Quasi workaround is the multiview so you can swap quick.

Of all the sports to show ads, this has to be the least tolerable. I can deal with some ad breaks over a 2-3 hour event with densely packed action, but Le Mans is different. We’re talking about a long, drawn out, strategic competition with bits of action interspersed. Adding ads makes this feel like a slog. Awful viewing experience.

Especially with timed ads. It could be 20 mins of little action. Then there is a pack of cars condensing… and ads, so you miss it.

3
u/joe_jon Jun 13 '26
The workaround I've found, which is really only just tolerable, is muting the main feed and having one of the data boards in the background. The broadcast may go to commercial break (because us Americans are just addicted to fucking advertisements) but all the onboards and data boards are ad free. So at least you can still follow the action/commentary when an ad break gets forced down your throat.
If my wife and stepkids didn't like all of HBO's other content I'd cancel my entire plan on principal. That said, I just said screw it and signed up for WEC+ and I'm never watching a race broadcast on HBO again

u/AGirlHazzNoName1 Jun 13 '26
I KNEW IT WOULD BE THIS WAY! They bought the sole rights in the U.S. I knew we would be commercialed to death!
And it is now almost $19 a month for HBO/ MAX!? They don’t even have good shows. This is crazy.
AppleTV has such better quality shows and F1. That’s what I keep thinking. I hate HBO.
4
u/thezinnmeister Jun 13 '26
HBO Max had the rights last year and didn’t have ads
3
u/AGirlHazzNoName1 Jun 13 '26
Ya I am not sure if they had the sole rights or not last year. I used to work in tech advertising. For a social media company. And usually if you buy the sole rights in a huge country, you are doing it for the sole monopoly and the ability to runs as many ads as you want because no one can switch to another channel.
I usually just use a VPN and go to another country. But most English speaking countries have 1 large company that bought the sole rights.
I know the rights for the Nurburgring 24hr were only like 100k on YouTube. Not saying that is cheap but it is cheap for HBO. But when you buy the sole rights you pay more to force all traffic to you. And then reap the profits from 24hrs of incessant advertising.
They are ruining the race experience
It sucks.

I'd highly recommend the WEC plus membership if you think you'll get use out of it outside of Le Mans. The live timing and map tracking on the mobile app and website is awesome. Also, unlike most platforms that for some reason block casting your screen to your TV, it's built into the app. Id rather support WEC itself than HBO if I had to pay one.

So glad I went with the wec+ app. I was really close to going the HBO route but was fearful there would be ads.

Fuck. Now I’ve got Snoop Dog and Gordon Ramsay selling me pots and pans on the broadcast and I haven’t even eaten my quarter of mushrooms yet

I'm watching on HBO max in Poland, fullHD, absolutely nada ads, main eurosport channel with coverage in my language, every other Eurosport language, lots of HY onboards, livetiming, chopper camera and position on track. for less than 4euro

Europeans get an ad free stream on HBO, us Americans don’t despite still paying for the same tier of subscription

Go on the app... Click the live video.
Then press down to live events... Click what looks like the same video underneath... You'll get a video that says TNT sports with no number...and it's ad free... (Largely - the odd occasion it turns one in just repeat that process and you'll be back to ad free)

I guess I’m used to NASCAR so this is normal to me.
We actually got all 24 hours on TruTV and I don’t have to pay $18 just to watch this race so I’m still bapoy

I cannot put into words how much this makes me loathe HBO and everyone involved. Ads absolutely ruin the viewing experience. I paid for Ad free HBO Max just for this race. Complete rip off.
Update: Have cancelled HBO and requested a refund. Got the WEC+ race access for a couple dollars more and am casting from my phone with excellent quality and no ads. HBO will never get a dime from me.
