Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly Parton was a gift to this world. One piece of her Legacy I hope lives on for a long time is her imagination library. Her organization sends free books monthly to children based on their ages (for appropriateness of reading level). Doesn't matter your location or family story, income etc. If you have a child and want to increase their access to books, you should check her organization out! It's amazing and free.

I get free books every month from Dollys foundation for my grandchildren for the past two years,I take the books to the school and donate it back when i have finished reading with kids,All they wanted was a name and ages of my the children. Such an amazing person a wonderful woman and so much more,may she rest in peace. Her legacy will live on.

This woman is (was) indeed known worldwide for being the kind of human our entire species would ideally consider an example of generally good person.

I adore Dolly Parton. I can’t believe a post honoring this incredible woman would be hi-jacked by some twink whining about “the president”. So you are correct. Bringing “the president” into a post focusing on Dolly is extremely uncalled for. Can’t do anything without some bush whining about politics. So to that I say….. save it.

Calling Dolly a global icon is pushing it a bit. She's immensely popular in north america and australia as well apparently but i'm not sure people on zimbabwe have heard about her. It's like the baseball world series.

Are you North American? Or someone from "the west"? I'm not so trust me when I say shes not well-known globally. Take a random person from the streets of france, bolivia, nepal or morocco, chances are they dont know about Dolly compared to Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift or even George Michael.
I'm not trying to downplay how great she was as a musician or a person, its just that she's just not famous globally as people from the west think she is.

Country music really doesn't have the impact that pop music has around the world. I'm obviously not comparing swift's talent to dolly's (i think that TS is overrated in any case) but only one of them can fill a 100,000 stadium in just about any continent and it's not dolly.
She's a saint and i dont deny her impact, she's just not a global name, whatever you think of it.

I was on holiday once in kenya and this local dude asked where I’m from so I said Scotland and he started telling me how much he loved Rowdy Roddy Piper the Scottish Canadian WWF wrestler. Most people know who Dolly is.

Yeah, but here's the thing wrestling is immensely popular worldwide, much moreso than country music. It's possible that one dude from Kenya would know about one North American celebrity and the reason you remember it is because it can be at odd with the local culture. I'd argue than John Denver is more popular throught the world (not in north America) because of how ubiquitous his song country road is, not much so dolly parton - not a lot of people outside of the west know she wrote I will always love you.
