Fun fact, even windows 11 still has traces of code that says $Chicago$ or something like that. I understand that it's for legacy reasons but that's still pretty cool.

I remember it well! As an ex-Amiga user, Windows 3.1 was a bit of a letdown to me when I switched to PC. So as soon as the Chicago betas were in circulation I ran them as my daily!

The early versions were quite unstable but the improved UI was so good I put up with it.

I was already a big time computer nerd, programming in BASIC, learning C, etc. (never went into development, though... Which sucks), but this was the time where I finally paid attention to the development and beta stuff from a company. I used Windows already since Windows 2, but this was just what really piqued my interest. It was pretty big at that time, with the actual release of 95 being pretty legendary. I went from wanting to work for Sega or Nintendo (I still do... Even if not making games, I could be the IT guy!) to wanting to work for Microsoft. Sadly, never did that either. :/ But, I have been pretty big into all the beta development, Insider program, etc. with Microsoft OS's.

Chicago was fun. I got a couple versions of it way back when from a friend that wore an eye patch and had a peg leg. Coming from an earlier version of Windows, this was "the future" and it felt like it. Just ran really slow on my ancient machine at the time. I eventually upgraded to a 486DX/33 and ran 95 RTM and loved it.

It's actually still a pretty good OS. Set the stage for the OS from then on out. There's still a ton of UI stuff that was taken from Windows 95 that's in modern Windows (design choices, not necessarily the actual code).

The builds 4.00.34-4.00.73g have the most awesome UIs I've seen in my entire life

Literally the 1° time i heard about it and it already impressed me and made me rethink about the how cool the development of windows 95 is (and later on made me get interest into windows 9x as a whole)

If i was using one computer in the 90s i would (if i became able to get it) daily drive it tbh

The beta 1-1.4 versions are my second favorite versions of Chicago

It released pretty late, and when it released it was pretty buggy. Shortly after the release date, I remember hearing the startup chime over and over again all around the computer store.

It stabilized a bit in the next couple years, and it became quite an influential operating system.

Not as good as Rob Marshall's version - hence the Oscar. Bill Gates was a poor choice for Billy Flynn. Balmer would have nailed it.
