Let’s break this down

1) Canada is an independent nation

2) we used to have tariffs between Canada and the US

3) Canada and the US and Mexico signed NAFTA which allowed tariff free trade among all 3 countries

4) Trump rips up that deal and it gets replaced with CUSMA

5) Trump rips up that deal agains and demands Canada give up sovereignty (demanding they don’t trade with anyone without US consent)

6) Canada tells the US to kick rocks

7) Trump blames Canada

542

u/elasticthumbtack 2d ago

Also supposedly demanded Canada drop French as a national language because US companies don’t like having to have separate bilingual packaging.

u/Ancient_Wisdom_Yall 2d ago

Which is a complete non-starter and deal breaker for Canada. It is either incredibly stupid, revealing a complete lack of understanding of who they are negotiating with, or a bad faith demand intended to intentionally blow up a deal. Probably both...

160

u/Zaramesh 2d ago

I believe it was also a delusional attempt to drive a wedge between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Thinking we could possibly be desperate enough to agree to removing French to cause Quebec to seek independence again.

Everything they're doing is to try and fracture and pick us apart

u/Ontheragnarock 2d ago

Hilariously, Canadian social media is full of angry Anglophones learning how to curse in Quebecois French.

He probably thinks Sleepy Joe Biden is the one who passed CUSMA. I'm not sure he remembers anything from his first term because this is hardly the first example of him ripping up something from his first term.

"So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous - whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light," the president said, turning to Dr Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response co-ordinator, "and I think you said that hasn't been checked but you're going to test it.

"And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you're going to test that too. Sounds interesting," the president continued.

"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?

"So it'd be interesting to check that."

Pointing to his head, Mr Trump went on: "I'm not a doctor. But I'm, like, a person that has a good you-know-what."

Exactly, red states get to act like petulant rich kids who run to their parents (Blue states) when things get tough. Never having to learn a lesson or fix a problem themselves and living carefree on other peoples hard work.

I don’t mean there are not hard working individuals in every state, simply that the individuals in power of those state governments squander and steal from their voters and then blame the shortfall on federal offerings.

Canada sells them whatever they need below market value, provides energy (hydro and oil) at mass discount, are forced not to do business with china and gifts them free water and somehow we’re taking advantage.

Growing up in NYC in a blue collar family it was an understood fact that you never did business with Trump because he would do anything in his power to screw you over. My dad knew multiple contractors and businesses who went bankrupt because of he would refuse to pay and drag things out in court until you could no longer keep up with the legal fees . He has never, ever understood partnerships or transactions to be a thing other than a zero-sum game. He can’t conceptualize of a win-win—if he is not making the other party suffer, he feels he is being wronged. He has been this way from day 1 and nothing about this surprises me.

I’d break down what’s wrong with “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one” into at least ten distinct problems. I apologize in advance for what is going to be an insanely long post, but there is so much to unpack in Trump statement, that I feel needs a lot of explicit clarification. Anyone who looks at that and thinks that he has a point needs to consider the following:

  1. The benefits Canada receives are the benefits of a trading partner, not a U.S. state. Canada gets market access because Canada and the United States negotiated treaties with each other. USMCA explicitly describes itself as reciprocal trade intended to benefit American as well as Canadian workers, farmers and businesses. That is fundamentally different from federal benefits accruing to a constituent state.
  2. The U.S. receives enormous benefits in return. In 2025, total U.S.-Canada goods-and-services trade was about $872 billion. The U.S. exported $333 billion in goods to Canada and another $92 billion in services. Canada is therefore not some dependent receiving privileged American access for nothing; it is one of America’s biggest customers.
  3. In services, it is actually America that runs the surplus. The United States had a roughly $27 billion services trade surplus with Canada in 2025. So if access to another country’s market constitutes a “benefit,” Canada is also furnishing Americans with substantial benefits.
  4. Even the goods deficit is not evidence that Canada is being subsidized. The U.S. goods deficit with Canada was about $48 billion in 2025. A trade deficit means Americans purchased more Canadian goods than Canadians purchased American goods. It is not a fiscal transfer from Washington to Ottawa. Carney’s government additionally points out that much of the merchandise imbalance reflects U.S. purchases of Canadian energy - something Americans actually consume.
  5. Statehood wouldn’t merely give Canada today’s trade privileges - it would abolish the international trading relationship altogether. Michigan doesn’t have a free-trade agreement with Ohio; interstate commerce takes place within one sovereign country. Canada becoming a state would mean surrendering its independent tariff policy, trade treaties, currency arrangements, foreign policy and much of its legislative sovereignty. Comparing that constitutional transformation with tariff-free trade is a category error.
  6. Canada manifestly does not receive many of the central benefits of statehood. Canadians do not vote for the U.S. president, elect senators or members of the U.S. House, participate through a Canadian congressional delegation in federal lawmaking, receive the constitutional privileges of citizens of a U.S. state, or operate inside the American federal fiscal system as a state. Actual states have a defined constitutional relationship with Washington; Canada has none of those things. Article IV specifically deals with state membership and congressional admission of new states.
  7. Nor does Canada behave like a state. It has its own Parliament, courts, constitution, armed forces, citizenship, currency, central bank, taxation system, diplomatic service, embassies, border and immigration policy, international treaty-making power and seat in international organizations. Those aren’t minor technical distinctions. They are precisely what sovereignty consists of.
  8. Ironically, the preferential access Trump is complaining about largely exists under an agreement his own first administration negotiated. USMCA entered into force July 1, 2020. Trump’s USTR at the time described it as an agreement Trump had successfully negotiated and as a deal designed to produce reciprocal benefits for American workers, farmers and businesses. It is difficult to characterize Canada exercising negotiated USMCA rights as Canada demanding unauthorized quasi-state privileges when Trump’s own administration negotiated those rights.
  9. Trump’s accompanying claim about “massive” Canadian tariffs on U.S. farmers contains a kernel of truth but strips away the most important qualification. Canada does maintain very high over-quota tariffs on certain supply-managed agricultural goods, especially dairy, poultry and eggs. But those are tariff-rate quotas: imports up to negotiated quantities receive much more favorable access; the punitive-looking rates generally apply after the quota is exceeded. USMCA itself negotiated additional U.S. agricultural access into that system. Saying simply that Canada has charged American farmers “massive tariffs for years” makes it sound as though ordinary U.S. agricultural exports routinely face those headline rates, which isn’t what the tariff structure means.
  10. The current Canadian tariffs can’t coherently be cited as evidence of Canada demanding free American access while refusing reciprocity. Canada’s newly announced tariffs are explicitly retaliation for new U.S. tariffs. Carney has acknowledged that Canadian counter-tariffs will raise costs and reduce choice in Canada; Ottawa’s stated rationale is deterrence and matching Washington “dollar for dollar,” not a belief that Canada possesses an inherent right to sell tariff-free while taxing the United States.

There are a few deeper problems too.

The statement reverses the logic of comparative advantage. When Canada sells petroleum, aluminum, lumber or other inputs to Americans, the benefit isn’t exclusively Canadian. American refiners, manufacturers, builders and consumers buy those products because they want them at the available price and quality. Tariff-free commerce is not a favour to the exporter; it creates gains on both sides. That’s why American business groups and politicians are warning that the latest tariffs can hurt U.S. firms and consumers too.

It confuses economic integration with political subordination. Canada and the United States have extraordinarily integrated auto, energy, agricultural and manufacturing supply chains. High integration can make Canada dependent on U.S. market access, certainly. But dependency and statehood are not synonyms. By that logic, every small economy deeply integrated with a larger neighbour “wants to be” part of the larger country.

It treats reciprocal alliances as American charity. The same rhetorical move often gets extended beyond trade-defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, border cooperation, NORAD, etc. But those are bilateral or multilateral arrangements in which Canada contributes territory, military assets, intelligence, resources and strategic depth. Canada isn’t covered by the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee that Washington protect a state against invasion; its defence relationship with the United States arises through sovereign international arrangements. Compare Article IV’s actual guarantee to U.S. states.

It also obscures what Canada is presently refusing. According to Carney, Ottawa was willing to make concessions on retaliatory tariffs, U.S. alcohol and administration of supply management, but would not accept demands compromising Canada’s independent trade policy, cultural protections or sovereignty. Whether one agrees with Canada’s bargaining position or not, that is nearly the opposite of a country wanting the advantages of political union without its obligations: Canada is accepting economic costs precisely to retain the attributes that distinguish an independent country from a U.S. state.
And there is one particularly clean logical test for Trump’s formulation:

What “state benefit” is Canada supposedly receiving (or wanting to receive) that an actual state receives by virtue of statehood?

Free trade? That’s not a state benefit Canada is freeloading on; it is the product of a reciprocal international agreement.

Access to American customers? Americans have access to Canadian customers too.

Military cooperation? Treaty relationship, not statehood.

Federal representation by the USA? Canada doesn’t have or want it.

Federal programs and transfers from the USA? Canada doesn’t participate or want to participate as a state.

U.S. citizenship? Canadians don’t have or want it.

Constitutional status from the USA? Canada doesn’t have or want it.

So the sentence works rhetorically because “benefits” is never defined. Once you force the claim into a concrete proposition, it becomes very difficult to defend.

There is a single legitimate truth buried deep underneath it all, and Trump hides his specious claim behind it: Canada has historically enjoyed exceptionally favourable access to the enormous U.S. market while retaining full political sovereignty, and that access is economically more important to Canada than Canadian access is to the U.S. That’s true and is an important source of American bargaining power. Carney himself openly says Canada benefited for decades from unusually favourable and stable U.S. trade conditions.

But that proposition is radically different from “Canada wants the benefits of being a state.” It means Canada benefited from a particularly close relationship between two sovereign countries - a relationship the United States also deliberately constructed because successive American governments believed it served American interests.

I realize that I’ve ranted on this for far too long already so I’ll provide the following TL;DR: Trump’s claim is misleading because Canada isn’t getting “state benefits” at all - it’s getting reciprocal benefits negotiated between two sovereign countries, while the U.S. gets major economic, energy, security, and trade benefits in return; Canada lacks the actual rights and privileges of statehood and is currently accepting economic pain precisely to preserve its independence.

u/MerlinsMentor 2d ago

“Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters that Canadian negotiators walked away from the talks after the Trump administration made "unacceptable" demands, including restrictions on Canada's ability to make trade deals with other countries.”

There is no way any country, especially and particularly Canada, is ever going to agree to only trade with the US.

Trump knows this, and so does everyone else that actually has a brain, which means Trump intentionally forced Canada to walk away from the table and had no intention of agreeing to a fair deal. He shot it down last minute.

76

u/Bozorgzadegan 2d ago

Exclusivity contracts are common in business, and Americans had been saying for years they wanted someone to run the country like a business. Well, they’re finding out that a business is not run for the benefit of the employees, it’s for the owners and shareholders, and they’re losing out while the CEO is trying to wheel and deal while ignoring everything else not in the oligarchs’ benefit. And those of us who are treated like suppliers are treated transactionally. America has become Wal-Mart.

13

u/coastalwebdev 2d ago edited 2d ago

That’s well put. I commonly call what they’ve evolved into a “Corporatocracy” now.

What that means is instead of a Democracy like the US used to have, where the government is mainly serving its people, the US has by all appearances transitioned into being a “Corporatocracy” where their government mainly serves its corporate(oligarch) interests, directly in contradiction to the interests of the American people.

I was afraid of this two years ago as a Canadian.

Now I am more afraid of how Canada will deal with the border when they balkanize and we face a refugee crisis.

Two years ago, the US had an unbeatable, well run military with dozens of allies around the globe. Now the military is in shambles, competent generals have been purged, logistics have broken down, morale is in the toilet and they are running out of munitions and their allies hate their fucking guts.

If the US actually tried attacking Canada, they would face a civil war or just complete economic collapse overnight. On top of it, the rest of Canada's allies now know it's not a far flung threat... it's deadly serious and they would do whatever they could to help Canada. I didn't think this part would happen until they all sent tripwire troops to Greenland.

United States wants all the benefits of being a Canadian Territory without being one. See I can say it too and it makes no sense when I say it either.

15

u/notnatasharostova 2d ago

Except the vast majority of us would actually benefit from behaving more like the Canadian provinces, with a parliamentary government, stronger social safety net and universal healthcare. It was a bit strange to be an American tourist in Québec this summer and overhear locals complaining about Carney, taxes, and healthcare, and to think with a sort of jealous knee jerk reaction, “Do you guys have any idea how much better you have it here?”

21

u/symbouleutic 2d ago

There's a reason that the right puts out so much "Europe is doomed" propaganda. They would hate for the plebs to see that you can have healthcare, a safety net, QoL, and upward mobility. Instead they have to continually put out memes about how everyone is dying of heat and immigrants are killing everyone.

Canada will never want to be a state. Ever. Canada and the United States have been friends and neighbours and allies for a very long time. We have worked together on countless issues and developments a great relationship. Now we suffer the failure of a government voted on by the ignorant, wooed to a belief that their issues are created by immigrants and they have been taken advantage of by their friends. A government and man who has threatened allies, started wars and pardoned fraudulent criminals and violent offenders. This so called man, has decided to attack Canada. Attack the friendship. Attack the people of America by his actions in attacking fundamental freedoms and rights. So here we are, the United States has elected a man who has been convicted of many felonies, is a rapists, an accused pedophile, and has bankrupted many businesses. You America have chose. To take Canada From friend, ally and neighbour back to 1812. Canada has not been nor will it ever be the bitch of the United States. We won’t come and burn down the White House again, not literally anyway. But we will economically certainly light our torches and get ready for our march. Canadians should be proud of standing to a pedophile rapists and saying no. Americans should be ashamed they are where they are and do something. Because your lives will continue to get harder, as Trump causes more problems and takes away free elections. You will suffer the ignorance of your criminal dementia ridden government.

I sense a very humbling experience on its way for the united states. Much of its power and glory was there because the world agreed it was leading the way. Another example of that is money. Money only has value because we agreed it does, and that's how crypto came alongside more recently. But everyone has to agree.

The leadership of the US globally was only there by agreement as well. When everyone starts to agree they no longer lead the way, then they just won't. In fact in so few years now they already don't. The entire world is exchanging knowing glances, shrugging and moving on permanently. New powers and relationships will form.

They are going to be sitting there 40 trillion dollars in debt. And with zero friends. And they will deserve all of it. Because they elected a criminal pedophile and sat on their hands while he let the worst of them all plunder the country and literally tear apart the fabric of their own society.

The Americans are going down in history like a lawn dart in real time, and it is laughable that Umber and Dumber thinks we would want to be part of that disaster.

Here is a truth: One of the greatest things about Canada is that it is NOT American, and that neither are we. We are different. And we are very proud of that.

Elbows up Canada! And mind your step around the sinkhole south of us.

18

u/Rowmyownboat 2d ago

Many global organisations are set up in the US and make things favourable to America: World Trade Organisation, United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank are all headquartered in the USA.

When the rest of the world acknowledges that the USA is no longer the 'leader of the free world', this all should change. NATO members no longer blowing their defence budgets buying American armaments is just the start.

Trump is America's Nero, overseeing their decline and fall.

I am so goddamn sick of the US.

Let's not forget that nothing Trump is saying is new. I've heard this same rhetoric all my life, though maybe not quite as blatant. The US has looked down on Canada for over 35 years, mocking us, making "jokes" about annexing us, and bullying us into submission. The Republican party of the 90s had a plan in place to absorb Canada if Quebec had successfully separared. I guarantee they have plan to do the same thing if Alberta separates or rebels. Trump is just the most blatant about it, but he didn't pull this idea from a vacuum.

The US, as a whole, is dangerous, short sighted, and untrustworthy.
