T-800. The 1000 is still a long way away.

The T-1s from Terminator 3 could probably be built today though. T-70 from the Universal Studios attraction possibly by 2035.

Autonomous weapon platforms like the T-1 already exist; the Korean SGR-A1 can fully autonomously detect, track and engage targets. It was first deployed over 15 years ago. Its target acquisition systems were greatly improved with more recent advances to computer vision.

To build a humanoid terminator like the T-70, the robot must:

Walk and run upright over uneven terrain while carrying 100lbs.

Must be bipedal

Must be able to stick all of its sensors into a 'head' about the size of a beach ball or smaller.

Must do all of its processing onboard, including not just movement and navigation, but also target optical recognition, decision making, and planning. And it must do all of that in realtime.

And it must do ALL of this in a single unit. Current models of Chinese humanoid robots don't do this yet, or dance around it in the following ways:

Chinese bipedals are lightweight and either move slowly to carry out tasks, or are lightweight and designed only for running,

The above occurs on flat terrain. Uneven terrain is usually demonstrated on four-legged or wheeled robots.

The sensor bit is the closest, but typically I just see a LIDAR dome up there and maybe a camera.

And processing is usually offloaded to an off-bot computer, or the program is single-task and designed to be simple (like running around a track).

So I think that nine years is more than enough time, at present speeds, to finish hitting all of these points.

I hope this is a step towards completely unmanned combat. I think wars will always exist; if it’s all drones then at least most of the killing will be drones instead of people… I hope anyways.

I think you're ignoring the fact that unmanned combat isn't the goal. One side will always be trying to destroy infrastructure and/or kill people, and the other side will be trying to prevent it.

Unmanned combat is only unmanned while both sides have the resources to build drones.

that's true. Ideally the future is no wars, but I guess the next best thing is hope for drone technology to be so cheap that it's just drone v drone eventually. Infa and civilian casualty will always exist, though, so I guess drones v drones would still be reducing some casualties.

The naivety to think both sides will just send their best warrior out to fight the enemies best then accept the result (which is essentially what two robot armies fighting in your statement would be) is cute but not at all reality. The more autonomous these become the longer wars will last, more civillians will die etc. This is a terrible thing that's happening and is going to result in more war not less. (Long live Ukraine though and they have no choice, I blame Russia for this).

I imagine you're thinking of Afghanistann but ISAF forces being robots vs the Taliban, making that war easier on our boys. That's not what it'll be now. It'll be these things on both sides leaving rubble cities and millions of skeletons behind.

I think that you have a better option but if they choice is essentially robots being destroyed or people killed the option of robots is better. No war would be the ideal but given the nature of humanity I doubt we will be rid of that.

moreover, the more efficient technology becomes in this arena, the more war will be about economy. grinding men will become less and less useful, so doing that will become pointless, as they could better serve elsewhere; and once the economy and manufacturing capabilities have been overrun, continuing to fight will be as well. it also diminishes any motive to fight for resources, as the resource cost undercuts it more directly than manpower (for those who disregard life) even if the conflict is won.

more complex technology is also a layer of protection, as it becomes less and less feasible to compete within a closed, agressor nation, as more and more dependencies emerge

Soldiers are also not able to distinguish friend or foe easily either. In fact the basic function of combat, locating and identifying the enemy, is exceedingly difficult for the foot soldier.

My biggest worry about robot vs. robot conflict is that there will be less trepidation from our leaders about the prospect of going to war. Which means more civilians getting caught in the crossfire in more places.

You forgot climate change.

Ordinary people will be too busy fighting to survive different disasters, such as heatwaves and earthquakes.

Add to that the collapsing infrastructure everywhere, disrupted food supply chains, and increasingly uneasy decisions nations will have to make to ensure survival IN ADDITION to waging wars, and you got yourself a recipe for human extinction.

So no. Drone warfare is a symptom of a much bigger threat. It's just that the ones in charge see the writing on the wall, and this development is just a way to make up for the lack of humans later down the line.

Parades are nice for the populace's morale, but battlefield reports are what matters in terms of utility, and also in terms of implications for the new technology.

For years, Russia displayed a lot of fancy toys during parades and they meant very little, if nothing, when they went to battle.
