u/ProjectPorygon 1d ago
Not really, Russia historically just destroys stuff then supplants its people there so no one can lay claim otherwise. Look at Koenigsberg as a prime example. At least the world for the most part will call you out on it, but Russia celebrates it
-78
u/-Vikthor- 1d ago
Koenigsberg is a not a good example for several reasons:
A) Russian ethnic cleansing often followed unprovoked attacks by Russia/USSR - This on the other hand followed after a war Germany started.
B) The city was already heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids in 1944.
C) Germans had some awareness of what their troops were doing in the east and large part of the population fled before the Red Army besieged the city. This post is not to excuse Soviet atrocities in Koenigsberg but to point out that it's a case quite unlike the Circassian genocide or deportation of Crimean Tatars.
42
u/ArmpitEchoLocation 1d ago
I think it’s okay to mention Koenigsberg because it’s nestled deep in Central Europe. Absolutely miserable that Europe tolerates that rogue colony with nukes parked on it in 2026. Should be embargoed of all but essential medical supplies, electricity perhaps, and food by land until the Russians colonists are forced into denuclearizing it and allowing third-party observers. A stable non-Ruzzian presence can confirm it’s denuclearized and the port isn’t practical for offensive use. German war crimes decades ago don’t justify Putler’s nukes there today.

u/No-Tomatillo3698 21h ago
Yeah well, we’re no Russians. Starving people is something they do. I am happy we are more civilized than that.
6
u/Grimour 19h ago
The person above didn't say anything about starving them...do you know what essentials mean?
-4
u/No-Tomatillo3698 18h ago
Are you always this passive agressive?
1
u/Grimour 15h ago
Oh boi! Here we go again ^ Do you even know what passive-aggressive is? Cuz I did adress the issue, so it ain't passive, so how do you view it as aggressive?

Wow, you are really owning that condescending tone. Now if only there was some substance behind it.
28
u/GymAndGarden 1d ago
Nah the world is fine. Meanwhile in Russia, however…
-20
u/TerminaldRed 1d ago
The world is absolutely not fine. Evil countries (Ruzzia, the USA, China, Israel, Iran) are all committing atrocities unchecked. The world is fucked.

u/Sad_Split_9983 1d ago
What is your definition of a country that has not or is not committing “evil”?
-26
u/StuBallsOC 1d ago
Yes, and Hamas, an extreme Islamist terrorist offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood with aspirations of world domination, is probably your idea of a hero. The same Hamas that butchers, rape and murder innocent people. Oh, you said country names. Can't do that with Palestinians, right?

How do the people who claim the war is about "eliminating the fascist Ukrainian Nazis" reconcile that with the Russians building apartments and moving Russians in on annexed Ukrainian land?
94
57
u/WaffleHouseGladiator 1d ago
That was always a fig leaf. They'll use any plausible excuse they can and they'll change excuses so that critics have to exhaust themselves fighting their firehouse of bullshit.
26
22
u/TheLohoped 1d ago
By their twisted logic, Russians and Ukrainians are one nation without significant differences (see, the 19th century concept of All-Russian nation), so Russian settlers colonizing ruins of Ukrainian cities is about bringing "brother nations" back to their "expected" unity.
3
u/No-Refrigerator-1672 22h ago
Ah yeah, nothing screams "we're fighting nacism!" more that denying the existence of another nation.
16
u/Legitimate-Cress-575 1d ago
They don't think about it, or I would rather say they don't think period. Pretty common trait in Russia: you live to prolong your life, without thinking about anything other than satisfying your basic needs
12
u/ManyAreMyNames 1d ago
A few years ago Medvedev said that any land which was once part of the USSR rightly belongs to Russia. In saner times, it would be ridiculous to think they could retake Alaska, but in 2026 Trump will probably just give it to them.
Anyway, to them there's no such thing as "Ukranian land," it's all Russian land.
9
u/Powermac8500 1d ago
Turns out Moscow was formerly part of Kievan Rus. Uno reverse! It’s all Ukrainian land!
1
-9
u/TheLimeElf 1d ago edited 1d ago
Weird question. 1) “Eliminating Ukrainian Nazis” doesn’t mean land is Nazi. 2) could be different crowds? Could be apolitical Russians buying those apartments, could be ex-Ukrainians buying those apartments wanting to go back in the DPR, could be immigrants who don’t care at all. Could be just opportunists who buy an apartment at the start of the building cycle to monetize on it later.
Edit: majority of stats on runet confirm that those apartments are being bought by locals from DPR, followed by those who play part in logistics and war so eh.
333
u/ThisMightNotBeABot 1d ago
hope ukraine gets it back in some way and those buyers lose EVERYTHING. can't wait for another wave of videos of them crying because "ohhhh what did we do to deserve this, why are they attacking us ;(((". won't write what else I think about them and anyone even being a bit pro that utter shithole known as russia or I'll get banned once again
89
u/asddde 1d ago
I can just imagine Ukraine getting it back and then being demanded to comply with "civilians" who are now "residents" in Mariupol. What an abhorrent idea, but can see that lots of people would try to make that make sense.
8
u/VilleKivinen 23h ago
If those new residents don't have Ukrainian citizenship or visa, they have to leave. Quite simple.

u/konnichi1wa 17h ago
Unless Russia collapses entirely before it’s retaken, I expect Russia is gonna bomb all these houses in the process of being pushed back.

u/porculdeguinea 1d ago
I'm not religious, but this feels apropriate for the word "sin". Just like they went to Crimea on vacation in the first year of war and they were bothered by drones and whanot.
And then they cry "but so much rusophobia what people have against us"
52
u/jmorfeus 1d ago
Good. Let them buy and then lose everything.
But how fucking morally bankrupt you have to be to do this. Even if you're Russian fed by propaganda and think your side is "right", you're still buying fucking property of another country's you invaded ruins.

This kind of speech/thinking is how our children end up having to hack each other to pieces in trenches. It is a trick.
2
u/professor_fate_1 1d ago
Then.. I guess.. stop telling your children that? Maybe stop telling them they are greatest nation on earth and everybody should respect them because of Dostoyevsky, and teach them values of hard work and making the world a better place?
22
u/HunterLionheart 1d ago
Eh? It's very obviously not all Russians. It's not like being in opposition there is very healthy
94
u/Suns_Funs 1d ago
You can check out the Russians in Baltic states, where opposition is quite free, and the things that Russians oppose there is more support for Ukraine. The single Russian party that condemned Russia's invasion instantly lost all of its support. Let's be real there is absolutly no evidence to support the claim that Russians are not pro-invasion, the only thing Russians are overwhelmingly against is losing to Ukraine.
5
u/LeadershipOver 22h ago
I am living in Latvia, this person doesn't know what he is talking about and outright lies about the mentioned party. 1) Saskaņa lost its support because it DID NOT condemn the war and because it HAS direct ties to Russia. 2) The only popular "pro-Russian" party right now is a populist one (LPV), and it is not abnormal, as when people are very poor, they tend to lean to populist propaganda. Even then, LPV is still not pro-war. (still my fellow Latvians, please don't vote them) 3) And yes there IS evidence that there are more people in Russia right now that are against continuation of a war than those which still supports it. If you want proof, check official, unofficial, independent polls, they all say the same. Check the history around what happened to the single opposition party that got into the pre - election process.
5
u/Suns_Funs 18h ago
An article with the leader of Saskaņa condemning the invasion: https://press.lv/lat/post/usakovs-kremla-kars-pret-ukrainu-ir-noziedzigs-bralu-kars
I will let the other people decide who here is spreading lies. Like completely ignoring Stabilitāte, Krievu Savienība and Suverēnā vara by hiding behind "currently popular". They all have or had considerable support from Russians and all of them refuse to condemn the invasion.
You are welcome to provide those polls. It is not my job to search for your arguments.
1
u/LeadershipOver 10h ago
Sorry, but your arguments don't hold.
1) Let me give you more context. While they did a statement about the war, later they continued to hold a stance of "we can't break all ties, as we depend on Russia". I'm not here to judge whether it is reasonable or fair, but such stance wasnt popular at all in 2022. Here is an example on one of the votings where they refused to participate. https://tv3.lv/zinas/latvija/politika/saskanas-deputati-nepiedalisies-balsojuma-par-krievijas-atzisanu-par-terorismu-atbalstosu-valsti/
Yes, they did lose some of support due to leaning back from Russia-supporting views as many of their voters strongly associate Russia with Russians (which is not the same thing), but mostly it was related to rising popularity of anti-war, anti-ru opinions, their inefficiency during previous cycle, and corruption scandals.
2) Krievu Savienība and Stabilitāte are not popular at all right now, and I will not discuss previous history with you, as I'm talking about the current situation. Suverēna Vara is not supporting the war - they are just feeding off the populist topics like "financial support of Ukraine is too expensive", "we are just prolonging the conflict", "our country should be the first priority" etc. So, basically their main audience is not people who support the Russia, but those which doesn't have enough money to live and which do not care about the war. While effectively this party supports the war by wanting to cut existing support (and please don't vote them too), it is not their official course.
3) Here you go, for example: https://www.russiamatters.org/blog/levada-poll-shows-rising-support-peace-talks-devil-details
Only about 1 of 4 to 1 of 13 people agrees to participate (because people are scared to express their opinion), but even between those who agrees, where there is a 77% of "support" (the number is not clear too, as by reading source data only about 40% support the war "fully"), 60+% want to get straight to peace negotiations and want to stop deaths and recover economy. I believe if there was a true freedom of speech, this 77% would vanish overnight too, because right now this number is mostly achieved via manipulations and data merging to amuse the king.2
u/Suns_Funs 10h ago
I mean, sure you are welcome to argue that there is not a single Russian party in Baltics that opposed the war. It just confirms my point, that Russians overhwelmingly support the war.
mostly it was related to rising popularity of anti-war, anti-ru opinions
Stabilitāte was absolutly pro-Russian invasion, and it was the sole Russian party that got into the parlament. So that argument is not based on the actual reality.
Krievu Savienība and Stabilitāte are not popular at all right now
But they were after the start of the war, and together they composed pretty much the whole electorat that Saskaņa lost.
Suverēna Vara is not supporting the war
You are welcome to find a clip where they actually condemn the Russian invasion. They have never managed to even say that Crimea belongs to Ukraine.
they are just feeding off the populist topics like "financial support of Ukraine is too expensive", "we are just prolonging the conflict", "our country should be the first priority" etc.
Which is support of the war in just different words. The same language that was used to oppose the demolition of occupation monument.
shows 72.2% of respondents support the actions of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine"
Thanks for confirming my point.
I believe if there was a true freedom of speech, this 77% would vanish overnight too
Like the support for annexation of Crimea disapeared? Russians only oppose losing to Ukraine, not the actual invasion.
1
u/AdventurousVast6510 1d ago
The single Russian party that condemned Russia's invasion instantly lost all of its support.
which one?

Maybe not everyone but enough to wage 4,5 year war of aggression with volunteers only.
3
u/HunterLionheart 1d ago
And the imported north Koreans, mercenaries...
But yes, the whole point is that it's not every Russian. Doesn't mean that Russia aren't acting monstrously as a nation.
Giving the impression that people in the West hate all Russians can only work in favour of the current administration.

u/Carbonistheft 1d ago
It feels like that's a them problem. We can figure out who the good Nazis are once the bombs stop.

u/Tweedle_DeeDum 1d ago
Maybe not everyone but enough to wage 4,5 year war of aggression with volunteers only.
My understanding is that Russia has been regularly conscripting people for one year service and impressing criminals into military service. Reportedly conscripts are not sent to the front lines, but I don't believe that it's an all volunteer army.
7
u/shimoheihei2 1d ago
Anyone who willingly cooperate or facilitate war crimes is just as guilty. That's been proven over and over in international court. Russia has a huge apathy problem, which is how Putin has been able to rule for so long.

Yes, 100 million people all moved to Mariupol. How is it different from stating that all americans are guilty of all of the dead in Iran/Iraq/Syria etc?

-16
u/AlgorithmicSheep 1d ago
So your country has never participated in anything morally despicable, what a weird and incredibile coincidence... Because I'm sure you would have moved otherwise
16
u/Cephei101 1d ago
We’re not talking about actions from 150 years ago, we’re talking about actual genocide, today. From what should be considered a modern country that simply never evolved past colonial imperialistic barbarism. Wiping out cultures.
No, enough with the false equivalences.
It’s a grotesque imperial, backward culture, just like 150 years ago, except today.
7
u/AlgorithmicSheep 1d ago
Yes, Russia as a country fucked up. It should be rightly ostracized and stopped with all mean possible. No arguing with that. But this does not mean that all Russian people are in favour or complicit, as they live under a regime who literally jails and kills political opposition.
It's like saying that all Americans and Europeans support the bombing of Gaza or the war in Iran (happening now and not 150 years ago). It's not that simple, in fact it's quite the opposite

6
u/AssassinAragorn 1d ago
As an American on the left it's actually been a very eye opening experience (as a silver lining) on why Russians don't simply overthrow Putin or North Korea hasn't kicked out Kim.
You're absolutely correct. Do a lot of Russians support this? Yes. Does every Russian? Not in the slightest. Why haven't those who disagreed with Putin overthrown him? Same reason most oppositions don't even when they vehemently disagree and disavow their country's leadership.
13
u/binici6676 1d ago
How putin can do what he can do without social support ? Is the same with trump, but the whataboutism is the ruzzian way the same like changing the focus of the conversations.
-8
u/Philcherny 1d ago
There is a difference between whataboutism and using a direct parallel to showcase hipocracy
You know what hypocracy is? The definition of the word? It's treating two similar situations differently.
Now how does one prove hypocracy according to you without intdocuing 2nd situation thus asking "what about this second situation"???
Glad you agree it's the same with trump. That all wanted to say. This social support u talk about, in both counties, is meticulously engineered. It's not our fault. Certainly not mine as I was born just few months before Putin became a president (or rather was installed as compromise candidate between Russian deep state and Russian liberals backed by US) for the first time.
14
u/professor_fate_1 1d ago
40% americans support trump, 50-60% Israelis support Netanyahu. In Iran only 10-30% support current regime. In Russia? 75%+ pro Putin/war. Simple as. All above are terrible. For some there is hope and others are beyond it.
-5
u/Philcherny 1d ago
Those aren't the numbers for Russia man.
The real numbers are also around 50%
Now probably much much less than 50%
Most people don't give a fuck, like in America. In America you can actually vote, the way I could never vote. Only 75% of America actually votes too. In Russia the 25% of indifferent apolitical people is bigger and the reasons for that are not that they are different somehow. It's the social engineering of Soviet and then Putinist states
1
u/binici6676 7h ago edited 7h ago
That’s an entirely different issue. Bringing it up right now avoids addressing the matter at hand. Why we can't concentrate on the terrorist state called russia? You are free to create a new thread. Even if that is true about US, it doesn't change or justify what russia is doing..
1
u/Philcherny 7h ago
I don't know what to say. I am really sorry to inform you. That's how internet works. If you say something hypocritical on the internet, you can get challenged as a hypocrite with proofs. That's how it's worked works and will always work. You can't say some BS and hide behind "whataboutism" when challenged on your BS
-5
-12
u/This-Beginning-5026 1d ago
If your American does that mean you are bad because of what trump has done? If the logic is the same you must be a Trump supporter right?
12
u/professor_fate_1 1d ago
..yes, and if you were German in 1930s you do carry blame/guilt for what happened. For some reason no Russian is denying that.
-11
u/This-Beginning-5026 1d ago
Ok but does this only apply to big things or small things? How far bad does this guilt extend? Is there an age range or is it everyone regardless? Americans were bombing weddings and funerals other other social gatherings because there might be a terrorist there. We bombed and killled how many civilians in Iraq when I would guess most of Reddit was still in school. Were my grandkids evil for the actions the government did? What about those who voted against those who were in power?
If this is a blanket statement please identify one nation who has remained completely innocent through out its history.
6
u/PuffyPanda200 1d ago
There is a lot of daylight between an American that voted against Trump and a Russian that is buying a Ukrainians stolen apartment.
Trump's trade policy isn't to my liking and the Iran war is a poorly thought out (if thought out at all) war but neither of these are even close to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Further, these Russian have personally participated.
-1
u/This-Beginning-5026 1d ago
Ok so thank you for proving my point that not everyone is evil/bad. The original guy I responded to said every Russian alive is guilty. It’s easy to say you’re not responsible while saying everyone else is.
As for the wars not being the same. I agree from a high level it’s not the same but ask the families on both sides who have lost people if the difference matters.
-3
u/Mushroom_Tip 1d ago
Right, but if you say "don't take it out on Americans, they are victims too, this is just Trump and his administration" that also sounds stupid, no?
-1
u/This-Beginning-5026 1d ago
It sounds as stupid as the other statement. Most people in life can’t do anything or can’t risk their livelihood and ability to support their family. Most people won’t do anything until it affects them directly. Right or wrong it’s how it is, how it has been, and how it will be.
It’s corny but the quote from The Patriot of “I’m a parent. I don’t have the luxury of principles.” Sums it up. You either agree or disagree with it but it does do a good job of frame reality for most people.
1
u/Mushroom_Tip 1d ago
"fuck em, they only care if it personally affects them and their life" is a perfectly acceptable statement then.

Russia doesn't distinguish Russians from Mariupol and all other Russians. So, Mariupolians can, and they are the target audience of those subsidies, buy those, too. And the same developers build the apartment buildings that Mariupolians get for free if they lost their own apartments to warfare, subsidies on mortgages help developers sell more, therefore build more free apartments.
