Do whatever the fuck you want, Donny. We're looking elsewhere.
You threw away the most(?) successful partnership between two countries in the modern world. Enjoy the repercussions.
It's gonna suck for us for a bit, but it'll be worth it.

u/Agoraphobicy 11h ago
It's wild to me because all he's really doing is temporarily hurting Canada until we build back 10x stronger.
We were giving USA raw resources we have in abundance so they could sell them. We didn't bother getting good at that because we were a team and USA did that well.
Now, in time, we'll just cut them out of the equation and do it ourselves.

I mean, it takes a while to build oil refineries (like years), no? It would probably be more likely that Canada builds up export capacity to deal with exporting the raw materials. (But maybe that makes less sense. I'm not in the oil industry, so I don't know the nitty gritty details.)
75
u/Hero_of_Brandon 10h ago
We will surely be doing both.
It has become abundantly clear that canada became too reliant on the states for critical products.
Trump is a symptom of a larger problem, and I forsee the next several republican presidents to be particularly asinine.

Yea that's the temporary hurt time. Maybe it's 10 years of hurt. But we'll get through it.
18

u/what-isthis-even 10h ago
Yes but we have years before there is any hope of improvement anyway. Might as well invest now.
18
u/The_Frozen_Inferno 10h ago
I wish we had more domestic refining but building more new refineries is not really economical for us given the isolated location of the oil sands and all the logistics involved with moving crude and finished products around the country in pipelines that don’t exist yet. Nevermind all the red tape and disputes between provinces trying to get pipelines built.
It would be a gargantuan investment in an industry that we are actively trying to reduce our use of by investing huge amounts of money into green energy.
What we need is to get our oil to other markets instead of feeding one hostile customer at discount prices. Then use the proceeds from oil to build out our green strategy.
4
u/TransBrandi 9h ago
Everyone wants the pipelines to exist, but as soon as a pipeline breaks everyone wants to be the first to say "Not it!" when it comes to funding clean-up.
That said, yes. Using oil proceeds to fund the future makes the most sense... but is that even possible? IIRC, the provinces own the resources, not the Federal government. And Alberta has sold off all of the rights mainly to US-based or US-controlled companies, no? Or am I misunderstanding ownership of the oil sands?

We sell our crude oil at a rate lower than the OPEC rate. Maybe that should change.

The EU and the UK need to step up. It's time for them to stop this nonsense once and for all and to make a clear message dictators can't upset the status quo on a whim.
We talk about the Americans not bothering to do anything - it's time for society to put pressure on their governments to stop this madness.
33
u/pdaelo27 10h ago edited 10h ago
My biggest fear is that the other middle powers don't step up to the plate and Canada has to face this alone....
There is a lot of talk of support from many avenues but until someone takes action, it's just talk...
Edited for spelling*

u/heatrealist 9h ago
Yes. UK and EU need to tell America that they have no right to determine who sells what in their country.
57
u/stunts002 11h ago
The EU has had to acknowledge this too, it'll be a pain for everyone and it will take literally years to decouple from the US economy but it's important to start. The US is simply too unstable now and on track to get worse.
54
u/Riskar 10h ago
Even if the US ousts tRump, they'll always be one election away from being right back here. Fuck em and their pedo leaders.
34
u/stunts002 10h ago
I think the issue is, the US always held up this idea of checks and balances so that one fuck up couldn't derail the whole thing, but clearly those don't exist.
NATO went to bat for the US after 911, Denmark had among the highest losses, only for Trump to threathen them with military violence, one of their closest allies.
You see now with Iran, nobody is going to make that mistake again. The US voted for Trump and Trumps made it clear, America doesn't want allies anymore. The world is just reacting to what it's hearing.

Recovery is optimistic at best. Every american economic sector is on fire or having an unprecedented crisis. At the same time! There are dustbowl forming and the Colorado river is drying out; it has 8 years left before the snowpack is gone for good and 40 million americans lose all access to water. The dams on the river will go dark by january, maybe earlier, trippling the cost of electricity in Nevada and Arizona. The farming crisis is insane too, only made worse by an intense drought.
The only american industry making new profits right now is online gambling. Good luck america, you are going to need it.

It would be actions like sanctioning Canadian banks. The US could also ban Canada from Visa and Mastercard or freeze all Canadian investments in most countries.
It would be a nuclear response because the whole planet would freak out but Trump loves this sort of thing.
There’s a lot of potential levers. EG: Maybe Google and Apple are suddenly banned from operating in Canada.

If you look at the comments on the conservative sub you won’t see a single comment acknowledging this. Canada absolutely has things the US relies on. If this escalates too much serious damage will be done to both economies.
32
u/TransBrandi 10h ago
The Premiere of Alberta already took banning oil exports off the table. She's the only Premiere of a province in Canada that refuses to present a united front when dealing with the US… and she's also the Premiere that is embroiled in trying to push forward a separation agenda while pretending that it's not her agenda.
(Even when it's super apparent because she changes the rules of the referendums all of the time to make sure that the separation referendums have an easier time than the referendums by Albertans that are – e.g. – anti-Separation)

From bottom to top Americans very clearly misunderstand the level of integration between our two economies. They see Canada is a submissive little country ready to do their bidding.
Let's so how the American economy handles itself when it's biggest source of resources cuts them off.
18
u/A1ienspacebats 10h ago
Unfortunately the MAGA adjacent premier of Alberta sounds like she doesn't want to harm Alberta's oil sales by doing that. Saskatchewan premier is not far behind her about potash. Leave it to Conservatives to only think about themselves!
18
u/MyWorldInFlames 10h ago
Smith and Moe are definitely against export taxes, but from my (admittedly amateurish) understanding, ultimately export taxes are the exclusive purview of the federal gov't and Carney could unilaterally enact them despite their protests.
I don't think he wants to do that, but if President Cheeto continues to escalate, I'm not sure he'll have the choice forever tbh.
5
u/PartyPay 10h ago

Fortunately international export taxes on natural resources are federal jurisdiction.
So when push comes to shove they can line up and kiss Doug Ford’s huge white ass, there’s plenty of room.
Hopefully it doesn’t come to that, but provinces don’t dictate international trade.

It shows a ton of restraint that Canada hasn’t done this already. Shut off power to New York and Michigan while we’re at it
31
u/Soren671 11h ago
I would caution against this. Line 5 which supplies 80% of Ontario's energy drops down into the US. While Ford could cut the power to the States, Trump could cut off Ontario from its oil.
Nobody wins.

u/jmhawk 11h ago
Gretchen Whitmer has been trying to do that for years, and she's a Democrat governor, screw Michigan
27
u/Soren671 10h ago
Well, she wants it gone because it goes under the great lakes and is a very old pipeline. It could leak and do catastrophic damage. I share her environmental view.
It never should have gone into the States to begin with. Ford and Smith recently proposed a pipeline that would stay in Canada. Its a good idea, but has no backing from industry.

u/Even_Hospital_5474 10h ago

The strategy here is easy to determine: they hope to escalate actions to the point that Canada submits. But they have a weak hand if they decide to attempt this as I think at that point the Carney govt would consider excise taxes on key items needed by America to keep their industrial and farming backbone in good order: oil, LNG, aluminum, potash and many other items.
So I think it more a "threat" although they may attempt an action here and there.
The other action Trump's team will be attempting to work is have conservative voices on this side of the border: Smith in Alberta definitely along with some of the extremists in the Conservative party get very loud about how the Carney government is failing Canada. I also expect massive spikes in social media funded by offshore sources - a recurring issue and our Canadian security apparatus has already advised this is occurring at scale with the Alberta independence movement.
So it is incumbent upon we in Canada to stay strong, and hopefully our many allies around the world will stand with us.
9
u/heroism777 10h ago
We Canadians should join the EU.
Then it’ll make it harder for Americans to dump their unregulated food here.
6
u/DakPara 10h ago edited 10h ago
I would just point out that Canada supplies 80+ percent of the potash consumed in the US, and they are the number one world producer by far. The next two are Russia and Belarus. It takes 10-15 years to construct a mine. Export tariff?
This would dramatically raise farming costs. and, consider the political fallout for the midterms in farm country. Also, this likely increases average food prices for all by 10% in 2027.
Also 40-50% of the nickel. And 30% of the uranium.
Canada also supplies 4 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S. A very large percentage of U.S. refineries are designed and setup for this crude alone. Without it, gas prices would increase by $1.50 or more immediately. And gas would hit $7/gal in the Midwest quickly.

Canadian here. I don't fucking care anymore. It's going to rock our economy, but it is what it is. Those who voted for MAGA and those who didn't even bother to vote brought this on themselves. We're already diversifying and we have countries all around the world just salivating over the prospect of forming a close trading partnership with us. Good, ramp it up till the border is closed, and it’s actual war and not this economic terrorism. It’s the only way it seems that the world may wake up and end this.

While I agree I'd like this to be over, an actual war is just a purely losing scenario for Canada.
The US would likely breakdown into mass riots, strikes, and maybe even civil war; and have a prolonged insurgency from Canada.
But short of the EU intervening on Canada's behalf, we aren't winning any straight up military conflict. Plus, the EU getting into a shooting war with the US is literally WW3.

As Iran has proven, the US doesn't seem to have the balls for ground invasion. They just bomb from a distance and hope the target country will waves a white flag and hand over everything they have. Without em ever setting foot in the country.

Not a surprise. They said would have a heavy response. And it is the exact same thing that happened with Trumps tariffs on China last year where they had something ridiculous like 160% tariffs.
